Description

W.'H. IVES.
Improvement in Spike Extractors.
No.119,770, Pate'nted oct. 10,1871.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. IVES, OF LUZERNE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPIKE-EXTRACTORS.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. IVES, of Luzerne, in the county of Warren and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Spike- Extractor; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being 'had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specication.
My invention consists in furnishing a claw-bar with a heel or auxiliary fulcruin which can be slid up under the ordinary heel or fulcruin of the bar itself as the nail or spike becomes elevated.
Figure l is a side elevation of the improved spike-drawer, and Fig. 2 is a plan view.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the ordinary spike-drawing claw-bar with a round heel, B, which serves for the fulcrum when the head of the spike is low down; but after the spike has been drawn a short distance the bar has to be mounted on a stick, stone, or other object to make it high enough, sometimes having to be blocked two or more times. This is very objectionable, as the blocks are not always at hand, unless carried for the purpose, and they are apt to slip away, and difiicult to manage. I therefore apply an adjustable block, C, to the said bar, having two or more points or heels,D,which may be employed. to support the end having the claws at diilerent heights, said block being made adjustable to bring the lower heel D under the heel B and the height of the two together, or move it away to use B alone; also, to move the upper heel D toward or from the claws, as may be found desirable. The block C has an aperture shaped to correspond with the form of bar A, but slightly larger, so as to allow it to slide freely thereon, by its own gravity, when the bar is placed in a vertical position. A set-screw, E, may be employed to prevent the fulcrum-block C from being dropped off the bar when the tool is not in use.
I am aware of the patent granted to J. Tysick, June 9, 1868, which shows a movable under jaw to the griper, and a fulcrum-piece which moves with this jaw, and I desire to disclaim it. My auxiliary fulcrum is independently adjustable, and can be moved directly under the heel of the ordinary fulcrum of the bar, while his has the common defect which renders all the old spikedrawers objectionable-that it loses the greater portion of its leverage as soon as the spike is unseated and started up.
`Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In combination with claw-bar A, the fulcrumblock C, arranged to slide on said bar and to bring its heel D under the heel B of the bar, as and for the purpose specified.
WILLIAM H. IVES.
