PROTECTING DEVICE FOR WORKMEN UPON ELEVATOR-CAGES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, PERCY E. LANE and lVILLIaM MCCARTHY, citizens of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Protecting Devices for /Vorkmen Upon Elevator-Cages; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in attachments to hoisting cables protecting workers upon the roofs of elevator cages and comprises a means for attachment adapted to move with the cable and covering substantially the entire width of the elevator shaft.
The invention consists of various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
Ve illustrate our invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view showing the application of our invention to the cables of an elevator. Fig. 2 is a side elevation.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A, A designate four sections, preferably of net work, with a vertical frame, which frame has two of its sides bent at angles as at B, forming a hollow square when the sections are held together by bolts or any other suitable means.
A U-shaped bolt D, similar in all respects to the U-shaped bolts N, passes through apertures in each angled portion of the frame and nuts are fitted to the threaded ends of the bolt. Each bolt is adapted to clamp a hoisting cable F and be held with sufficient frictional contact therewith to cause the sections to rise and lower with the cable.
Rings, designated by letter H, are fastened one to each outer edge of a section and chains K connect each ring with U-shaped bolts N which also engage the rope being Specification of Letters Patent.

held in clamping relation therewith through the medium of the plates T which are caused to clamp the cables through the medium of the nuts S, as shown.
By the provision of a shield or protecting device as shown, it will be noted that the same may be easily and quickly applied to the hoisting cables and form a protection to workingmen upon the cage beneath, the protecting screens moving up and down with the cables and at a fixed distance from the cage. When it is desired to remove the protecting screen sections, it may be easily and quickly done by removing the bolts which clamp and hold the device to the cables, the sections being adapted to be folded together for convenience in transportation or storage.
WVhat we claim to be new is 1. A protecting device for workmen upon cages of elevators consisting of a series of screen frames having each an angled portion forming a central opening, and means carried by the frame for clamping the hoisting cable of the elevator.
2. A protecting device for workmen upon cages of elevators consisting of a series of screen frames having each an angled portion forming a central opening, U-shaped bolts carried by the frames and adapted to frictionally engage the hoisting cable, and nuts upon the bolts.
3. A protecting device for workmen upon cages of elevators consisting of a series of screen frames having each an angled portion forming a central opening, U-shaped bolts carried by the frames and adapted to frictionally engage the hoisting cable, nuts upon the bolts, and connections between the cable and the outer edges of the frames.
4. A protecting device for workmen upon cages of elevators consisting of a series of screen frames having each an angled portion forming a central opening, rings connected to the outer edges of the frames, chains fastened to said rings, U-shaped bolts connected to the other ends of the chains, and means for fastening the same to the hoisting cable.
