ADJUSTABLE WINDOW-SCAFFOLD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 2, 1917.
Application filed February 1'7, 1915. Serial N 0. 8,841.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. LOEBEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVest Allis, in the county of Milwaukee and State of WVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable lVindow-Scaffolds; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to an adjustable window scaffold.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of adjustable window scaffolds and to rovide a simple, practical and efficient scafiold designed for washing the outside of windows of high buildings and adapted to afford perfect safety to enable it to be used on the highest buildings of the sky scraper type and capable of affording adjustment to enable it to fit windows of different widths.
A further object of the invention is to provide an adjustable window soafiold of this character designed for the use of painters and various other workmen and adapted to afford a stage or platform of the desired size and capableof being applied to various portions of a building for enabling workmen to operate on the exterior thereof.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Figure. 1 is a side elevation of an adjustable window scaifold constructed in accordance with this invention and shown applied to a window, a portion of a building being in section, Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same on line 22 of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a plan view of the window scaffold, the wall of the building being in section, Fig. i is an enlarged detail sectional view illustrating the construction of the adjustable clamping members, and Fig. 5 is a detail transverse sectional view of one of the side supporting bars.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing.
In the accompanying drawing in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, l1 designate a pair of side supporting bars arranged horizontally and extending outwardly from a window 2 and preferably constructed of malleable channel metal but any other suitable material, may of course be employed. These supporting side bars are provided at the inner ends with integral downwardly extending hooks, having horizontal projecting bills 4 adapted to engage under a window sill interiorly of a building as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing whereby the side bars are securely interlocked with the wall.
The side supporting bars are clamped and securely maintained in interlocking relation with the wall by means of clamping members 5 constructed of malleable metal or other suitable material and consisting of bars or plates arranged upon the upper faces of the side bars and provided with depending hooks 6 formed integral with said plates or bars and extending downwardly through slots 7 in the side supporting bars 1. The hooks 6 have horizontally disposed inwardly projecting engaging portions or bills 8 which engage under the window sill 9 and the outer edge thereof. By this construction, the window sill is securely gripped between the inner and outer hooks and the scaffold is firmly and securely mounted in position and there is no liability of it becoming accidentally disengaged from the window sill. The said slots 7 extend longitudinally of the side supporting bars, and are of suflicient length to afford the'desired adjustment for enabling the window scaffold to be applied to window sills of diiferent sizes.
The clamping members are secured in their adjustment by means of vertical bolts 10 arranged in the slot 7 of the side bars and provided at their upper ends with thumb nuts 11, but any other suitable means may be employed for retaining the clamping members in engagement with the outer edge of the window sill.
The side supporting bars are provided with upwardly projecting arms 12 which are connected by a horizontal brace or bar 13 adjustably secured at its terminal portions to the said arms 12 by means of bolts 14 or other suitable fastening means. This trans verse brace or bar is preferably provided at 16 and the side bars are also connected at a point intermediate of their ends by a transversely disposed board 17 constituting Y a platform and provided at each of its terminal portions with a series of perforations 18 for the reception of a bolt 19 having a thumb nut 20 and adapted to be arranged in different perforations which correspond with those of the bar or brace 13. The board 17 which forms a stage or platform is designed to be of various lengths to adapt the scaffold to the use of painters and other workmen and the side supporting bars may be arranged at any desired distance apart to afford the necessary stage room or space for the use of one or more workmen. The brace or bar 13 is preferably constructed of metal while the platform 17 is designed to be made of board, but any other suitable material may be employed. The supporting bars are rigidly supported in a horizontal projecting position by inclined braces 21 pivoted at. their outer ends 22 to the side supporting bars 1, preferably at the outer side edges thereof and extending downwardly and inwardly and having their inner lower ends23 fitted against the exterior of the wall of the building to which the scaffold is applied. The lower or inner ends of the pivoted supporting braces 21 may be bent at an angle as shown to provide abutting portions for engaging the wall of the building and the said braces 21 are provided at their lower ends with eyes 24 into which are linked chains 25 for connecting the lower ends of the braces with the inner portions of the side supporting bars, but any other suitable flexible connection may of course be employed for this purpose.
The chains are equipped at their upper ends with hooks 26 for engaging eyes 27 which depend from the inner portions of the side supporting bars and preferably con- Gopies of this patent may be obtained for sist of eye-bolts. These eyes are of sufficient size to enable thechai n, if necessary to be passed through them to secure any adjustment of the flexible connection. The inclined braces 21 relieve the hooks of strain and enable the scaffold to support the required weight without liability of unduly straining the means for detachably interlocking the inner portions of the side bars with the window sill.
lVhat is claimed is A window. scaffold extending entirely across the space between the sides of a window frame and adjustable to suit the width of the windowand comprising a pair of channeled supporting bars provided at their inner ends with books for engaging a win dow sill at the inner edge thereof, said supporting bars being also provided at their outer ends with upwardly extending arms and having longitudinal slots located intermediate of their ends, clamping members consisting of bars of greater width than the slots arranged upon the upper faces of the supporting bars and provided with hooks extending downwardly through the slots and arranged to engage the window sill under the outer edge thereof to hold the scaffold against upward movement, fastening devices spaced from the hooks and operating in the slots to secure the clamping members in their adjustment, a platform adj'ustably secured upon the supporting bars, a bar con necting the arms and also adjustably secured to the latter, said connecting bar and platform maintaining the supporting bars in proper spaced relation at the sides of the window frame and inclined braces pivoted to the flanges of the channeled supporting bars'and adapted to fit against the exterior of a wall. 1
