DEFLECTOR FOR SHEA'VE BLOCKS.
Application filed. April 14, 1924. Serial No. 706,323.
To all whom 't in a3 concern- Be it known that I, BURT STANLEY Minor, a citizen of the United States, residing at Les rrngeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Deflector for Sheave Blocks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a deflector for sheave blocks and particularly to sheave blocks employed in connection with oil well derriclrs.
VHer-etofore in lifting casing, and similar structures in oil well derriclrs, the sheave block connected to the upper end of the casing sections often accidentally contacts in its vertical movement with the finger board or other portions of the derrick structure, resulting in damage thereto.
The main object of my invention is to provide deflectors for sheave blocks which will effectually deflect the block past the finger board, and other stationary objects during its operating movements, whereby injury to the finger board derrick structure will be obviated.
Gther objects and advantages will be clearly apparent from the following description, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawing forming a part thereof, in which:

Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section of the deflector taken on line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a horizontal section of the de flector taken on line 4-4: of Fig. 3.
In the drawing designates a sheave block similar to my improved block illus trated and described in my co-pendiug application for patent entitled Sheave block, bearing Serial No. M9244, filed July 3, 192-3, the block consisting of a plurality of inner and outer straps 11 and 11' respectively, suitably spaced apart by separators, sheaves 12 being journaled in bearings secured to the various straps. Pivotally mounted on a bolt 1 is a lower clevis 13, the upper clevis 15 being pivotally connected to the bolt 16 that passes through the upper end of the sheave straps.
The deflectors which preferably consist of lates '20 are secured to the upger and lower ends of one of the outside straps 11, by the bolts 1%, 16, their free ends 21 extending beyond the ends of the strap 11, and are bent or curved inwardly towards the upper and lower clevises. The upper side edges of the plates converge upwardlyand terminets in a rounded end 22. Vertical reinforcing and deflecting beads 23 are formed externally along the vertical side edges of the plates to a point E l on the free ends of the plates. Plates 20 are provided with bolt holes 25 in their lower port-ions through which the bolts 14: and 16 extend with the heads 26 of the bolts engaging the outside of the plate, holding them firmly against the upper and lower ends of the outer strap 11 to which the plate is attached. liiiwardly extending lugs 27 are provided on the lower side edges of the plates 20 which engage notches 28 formed in the upper and lower edges of the st 'aps 11, to which the plate is attached, whereby the deflector is properly centered on said bar and held against shift ing thereon. The upper clevis 15 is of small size and its ends 29 pivotally engage bolt 16 between the upper ends of the inner straps ll.
lVhen the block is aiscd in the derricl: and approaches the finger board in the upper part of the derrick, the upper arched portion 21 of the deflector first engages the finger board and diverts the block to one side, and then the beads 23 engage the lingerboard and deflect the block past the same, the beads 23 extending slightly outside the bolt head 16 so that the finger board will escape said head, thus preventing breakage of the finger board or injury thereto.
While the guards are illustrated as attached to only one side of the sheave block, it will be understood that they may be mounted on the other side of the block as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, the nuts 17 holding the guards firmly in position.
