Description

F. M. STILES.
LADDER HOOK APPLICATION FILED SEPT- 9, 1920.
Patented Oct. 11, 1921.
PATENT FRED M. STILES, OF NGRBFSTOWN, PENNSYLVAEIA.
LADDEB-HOOIQ Application filed September 9, 1920.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, Fnnn M. STILns, a c1t1- 'Zen of the United States, residing at Norristown, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Ladder-Hook, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to ladder supporting hooks, and itis the primary object of the invention to provide a ladder hook de signed to be positioned over the gable of a building, for supporting a ladder in the event that the ladder is to be employed as a scaffold to facilitate the repair of a roof.
A further object of the invention is to provide a ladder supporting hook which will securely grip the ladder in a manner to prevent lateral movement thereof, with relation to the roof, on which the ladder is positioned.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a hook of this character which will lie in spaced relation with the gable of a roof, so that the same will not contact with the lightning rod which is usaully positioned along the gable or ridge.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing Figure 1 illustrates a side elevational View of a ladder having connection with a hook constructed in accordance with the present invention, a portion of the ladder being broken away to disclose the clamping means of the hook.
Fig. 2 illustrates a plan view of the same; and
Fig. 3 illustrates a perspective view of one of the clamping elements, and rung suport. p Referring to the drawing in detail, the device is shown as applied to the roof 5 of a building, the hook portion 6 thereof being shown as positioned over the gable of the roof, the free end of the hook portion havifng ponnection with the roof engaging oot S ecificaticn of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 11, 1921.
Serial No. 409,088;
This foot 7 comprises a relatively large metallic member having the spaced ears 8 forming a part thereof, which ears are pro vided with curved slotted portions 9 adapted to accommodate the bolt 10, the connection between the foot 7 and hook .6 being such as will permit the foot to adjust itself to various roof pitches.
In connection with the foot 7, it might be further stated that the same is designed for use in the repair of slate or tin roofs as a guard to protect the tin or slate roof against puncture by the hook member.
As shown, this hook member includes a relativel long body portion 11 which has its free end curved upwardly and inwardly as at 12, so that the same will em "race a rung of a ladder, as indicated by the drawing, there being provided a clamping ele ment 13 adapted to clamp around a portion of the adjacent ladder rung to insure against movement of the ladder.
The clamping member 13 includes a body portion 14 and a curved hook section 15, apertured ears 16 being provided substant ally intermediate the ends of the body portion. 14 to provide bearings for the pins 17, which connect the bifurcated end 18 of the operating lever 19, to the clamping member 13, the clamping member 13 being however secured to the body portion 11 as by means of the bolts 20 which pass through the body portion 14 and body 11 of the hook member, both being adjustable to different widths of rungs. Associated with the clamping member 13 1s a movable hook member 21 which includes a pair of spaced arms 22 designed to clamp over the rung 23 of a ladder, above the clamping member 13. The arms 22 are formed integral with an arm 24: which is threaded as at 25 to accommodate the cross bar 26 which is provided with lateral bearings 27 positioned within suitable openings provided in the furcations of the bifurcated end 18 of the lever 19.
From the foregoing it is obvious that due to the connection between the arm 2d and operating lever 19, the arms 253 are moved into close engagement with the rung 23 when the lever 19 is moved to a position as indicated by Fig. 1 of the drawing.
When it is desired to remove the hook member, it is only necessary to move the operating lever 19 upwardly releasing the arms 22 from the rung 28, with the result that the ladder may now be readily moved from the hook member.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A ladder supporting hook including a body portion having hook members formed at the respective ends thereof, one of said hook members adapted to be positioned over the rung of a ladder, a stationary clamping member secured to the body portion intermediat the ends thereof a movable hook member associated with the stationary clamping member, an operating lever for moving the movable hook member into clamping relation with the stationary clamping member, and an adjustable foot carried by the'other of said first mentioned hook members.
2. In combination with a ladder and the rungs thereof, a ladder supporting hook including a relatively long body portion, a relatively large hook member formed at one end of th body portion, a hook member formed at the opposite end of the body member, a stationary clamping member sup ported by the body portion, a pair of spaced v body portion, a hook member formed at each end thereof, a stationary hook member secured to the body portion intermediate the ends thereof, a lever having pivotal con-- nection with the stationary hook member, curved arms cooperating with the stationary hook member for gripping a ladder rung, and said curved arms having connection with the operating lever, whereby movement of the operating lever moves the curved arms into engagement with aladder rung. In testimony that I claimthe foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
