UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FLETCHER A. SEAMAN, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
SAFETY DEVICE FOR LADDERS.
Application filed November 15, 1923, Serial No. 674,992. Renewed April 22, 192 5.
The present invention relates to asafety device for ladders and more particularly to the type in which a supporting arm is secured to each of the uprights of the ladder for the purpose of holding the upper end of the ladder in spaced relation to a wall or upright surface, and an object of this invention is to providean improved means of securing the supporting arm to the ladder up right.
To these and other ends, the invention consists of certain parts and combinations of parts, all of which will be hereinafter described: the novel features being pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a ladder equipped with the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the upper end of the ladder with the safety device thereon;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary view showing the safety device secured to one of the uprights of the ladder;
4- is a similar view in side elevation; Fig. 5 is asection on the line 55, Fig. 3;
Fig. 6 is a section on the line 6'-6, Fig. A.
Referring more particularly to the draw ings, 1 indicates the ladder uprights and 2 the rungs. To the upper ends of the uprights 1 the attachment or safety devices are secured. These safety devices each comprises a pair of abutments 3 and 4: arranged at right angles to each other to cooperate with two proximate sides of the upright. Extending from the two abutting portions at an obtuse angle to both of them is an arm 6 which in order to strengthen the same is provided with two longitudinally extend-- ing ribs 7. Adjacent the abutting portions 3 and i the arm 6 has a deflected pointed end 8 which is adapted to cooperate with the wall against which the ladder is supported. To the end of securing the abutting portions 3 and 4 in cooperation with an upright, an L shaped securing device 9 is provided which has its opposite ends screw threaded at 10 and provided with nuts 11,
possible to adjust the bracket to uprights 1 of different widths and thicknesses. The main or straight portion 6 of the supporting arm preferably has a collar 14 thereon with which the suspending hook 15 of a paint bucket 16 or other device may engage in order to prevent the suspending device slipping on the arm 6 toward the wall.
From the foregoing it will be seen that there has been provided a ladder attachment which is adapted to be secured to ladder uprights having different widths and thicknesses, the securing means being adjustable to firmly hold the attachments to the upright.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A ladder attachment comprising two connected abutments arranged at right angles to each other to receive in the angle between them the upright of a ladder, a supporting arm formed integrally with said abutments and extending from the outer faces of said abutments near the juncture on a line at an angle other than a right angle to both of said abutments, and a member adjustably connected to both of the abutments near their free ends toextend about an upright cooperating with both abutments. said means being movable to open the space between V gs FLETCHER A. SEAMAN.
