Description
UNTTED sTATEs PATENT onincn.
C. l?.1 BAILEYQOF Z-NESVILLE, OHIO.
PORTABLE HEAD-REST FORy CHAIRS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 10,698, dated March 28, 1854.
To all whom t may concern v Be it known that I,` C. P. BAILEY, of Zanesville, in the county of Muskingum and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful apparatus, which I denominate a portable head-rest, to be used on common chairs or seats of any description for barbers, dental, or other purposes, and more especially for travelers in railroad-cars;
and I do hereby declare that the' followingsame length bolted or riveted near each end,
so as to form a swivel joint therewith. The two pieces (b, 6,) when turned outward, as shown in Fig. l, rest against the extreme .end of plate (a), which is turned at right angles at (o) for that purpose, representing the letter Y in position. An elastic or flexible band or cushion (ci) is suspended across from the upper ends of thearms (b) by having its ends fastened thereto in any convenient way by buttons, hooks, or otherwise. At the other end of the plate (a) are two similar arms (e) to those before described, lettered (b) with a strap or other fixture (f) extended across their lower, expanded ends. The device thus formed is to be placed between the back of the person using it and the back of the seat von which he is sitting with the convex side of the plate (a) resting against the chair back and the lower arms and strap against the hips by which it is steadied and held in place the upper arm (b) being brought up on each side ofthe head, which is thus supported when thrown back, as shownin the drawings, by the band or cushion (d), which forms a perfect head rest more convenient and better adapted than those usually employed and one that when not in use can be folded up, as represented in Fig. 3, and carried in the pocket or elsewhere in traveling, or for. conveniently stowing away. It is obvious' that instead of two arms at v(e) l.one single stem may be turned down, and this may be broad or narrow, as convenience shall dictate; also by a segment with notches and pins atv either or both ends the arms may be `distended more or less as desired, but all such changes are apparent and need no further description.
I have named plate steel for the manufacture of my apparatus, but I do not -intend to be understood asconning myself to that material, as there may be employed any suitable material for the purpose, my ldesign being to furnish a steady support for the head that is not attached to the chair or other seat back, which will be stable while in use, and can be readily conveyed from` place to place, always ready for use in any description of seat, constituting it, as its name indicates, a portable head rest.
I am aware that various devices have from time to time been contrived for head rests, but they were all required to be in some way att-ached to the back of the seat by screws or otherwise, while my apparatus needs no such fixture.
Having thus fully described my new portable head rest, what I claim therein as new and for which I desire to secure Letters Patent is- The apparatus above described consisting of a back plate with arms for supporting the band or cushion upon which the head rests, the whole being sustained by the hips which hold it in place at all times disconnected with the back of the seat but resting against or upon it so as to be at once taken away without injury to the seat and folded up in portable form, the whole being constructed and arranged substantially in the manner and for the purpose descrxibed. f
