Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 12,1913.
Application filed July 23, 1912. Serial No. 711,071.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN SABATINO, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Richmond Hill, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vibratory Massage Apparatus, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to mechanical vibrator apparatus or devices and especially to devices of this class wherein the vibratory movements are imparted to and through the hand of the operator for application to a patient or a party being treated, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class having means to increase and de crease the force of the vibrations at the will of the operator, together with improved means for connecting the device or apparatus with the hand of the operator; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in a device or apparatus specified, constructed and operating as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a back or plan view of a device or apparatus of the class specified embodying my invention; Fig. 2 a side view thereof; Fig. 3 a section on the line 33 of Fig. 1; Fig. a a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2; and, Fig. 5 a section on the line 55 of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is an end elevation of the curved arm Z).
In the practice of my invention, I provide a vibrator a which involves, in its construction, a cylindrical casing of composed of a back side member a" and a front side memher a det-achably connected as shown at a and the back side member a is provided axially of the casing with a bearing and coupling sleeve a, and the front side member a is provided with a similar coupling and bearing sleeve a which extends axially through the part a of the casing, and the inner end of which is closed by a threaded cap a and the outer end of which is provided with a neck a".
The bore of the coupling and bearing sleeve of is enlarged at the outer end thereof, as shown at a and mounted in said bearing and coupling sleeve is a vibrator shaft 6 the Outer end of which is provided with a longitudinal bore Z) and with a head Z) and the shaft Z) extends partially and axially through the casing and is provided centrally thereof with a longitudinal slot Z) in which is pivoted a curved arm o the pivot of said arm being at b and the end Z) of said arm is longer than the other end Z) and is curved as shown and provided with a weight or head Z), and the curve of the end Z) is approximately similar to the curve of the back side a of the casing a in central axial section of said casing.
Secured to the shaft 6 adjacent to thebearing and coupling sleeve 64 is a collar 0 which prevents the outward movement of said shaft, while the head 5 thereof prevents its inward movement, and the inner end of the shaft 5 is provided with a reduced extension 0 v Mounted in and movable axially of the coupling and bearing sleeve 64 is a sleeve bearing (Z provided at its outer end with a cam head (Z and at its inner end with a sleeve (Z to receive the inner end of the shaft Z), and in which said shaft Z) is free to turn. The sleeve (Z is longitudinally movable on the shaft Z), and the central portion of the bearing (Z is provided with a longitudinal bore (Z adapted to receive the extension 0 of said shaft Z).
Placed in the inner end of the coupling and bearing sleeve 64? is a spiral spring 6 which bears on the cap a of said bearing and coupling sleeve and on the cam head (Z of the bearing (Z and normally serves to force said bearing outwardly, and passing through the neck a of the coupling and bearing sleeve 6& is a screw f, the inner end of which is provided within said sleeve with a cam head f which corresponds with and operates in connection with the cam head (Z of the bearing (Z, and said screw is provided at its outer end with a head f and also with a. lock nut f which operates in connection with the neck a of the sleeve In practice, a flexible driving shaft 9 having an insulating covering 9 and inclosed by aflexible protection 9 is coupled in connection with the vibrator shaft b within the coupling and bearing sleeve a, as shown at g" in Fig. 1, the bore Z) in the end of the shaft 5 facilitating this operation, but this connection of the driving shaft g with the vibrator shaft 6 may be made in any de sired manner and forms no part of my invention.
In the operation of the device the vibrator shaft 5 is rapidly rotated by means of the shaft 9 in the usual manner, and this derstood, by turning the screw 7. When this screw is turned in one direction the head 6Z3 of the shaft (Z will be forced inwardly and will strike the end 5 of the arm. o and force said arm into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, in which position the end 6 thereof will be close to the axial line of the casing a and the force of the vibrations will be much less than when said arm is in the position shown in full lines, the end 6 thereof being farther away from the axial line of the casing and thus serving to increase the force of the vibrations, and by turning the screw f in the opposite direction the arm 6 will return or be returned to the position shown in full lines and the force of the vibrations will be increased.
The bearing d is capable of longitudinal movement, as shown and described, but is not capable of rotary movement, the cam head (Z thereof being provided with a tooth or projection (Z movable in the groove d: in the coupling and bearing sleeve as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 5, and while the sleeve (Z at the inner end of the bearing (Z.forms I a bearing for the corresponding end of the shaft Z), said sleeve also serves, and its principal function is, to regulate the position of the arm 6 so as to increase or decrease the force of the vibration produced by the rotation of the shaft 6. I also provide my vibrator with a hand attaching device it, in the construction of which, I employ a plate h of the general form shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4t, and the back of which is provided centrally thereof with a standard 72, the end of which is provided with an opening 71, whereby it may be slipped on over the outer end of the coupling and bearing sleeve a and fitted to an enlargement 72,
thereof, and said end of the standard it? isv provided with a set screw it whereby it may be secured in position, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. The end portion 7L7 of the plate h? is wider than the end portion it thereof, in the form of construction shown, and is provided adjacent to its opposite side edges with parallel slots 2' and the end;
portion 7b8 is provided with corresponding parallel slots 2 and the front side edge of the plate 71 is provided with ears and f and passed through the ear j is a shaft 7' one end of which is pivoted in the ear f, as shown at 7", and the other end of which is provided with a milled head j by which it may be rotated. The shaft j is provided centrally thereof with a ratchet wheel 7' and the standard h is provided with ears y between which is pivoted a spring operated pawl 7' which operates in connection with the ratchet wheel 7' and is provided with an upwardly directed handle or thumb and finger piece j by which it may be forced out of connection with said ratchet wheel. My improved hand attaching device also involves two straps 7a and m, and corresponding end portions of these straps are passed through the slots 2' and 2' in the front edge portion of the plate 71?, and connected with the shaft j while the other end portions of said straps are passed through the slots 2' and 2' in the back edge portion of the plate 7L and are connected with said plate by means of buckle devices a, and by means of these different end attachments for the straps 7c and m said straps may be adjusted at both ends as will be readily understood.
The buckle devices a consist of raised keepers a mounted 011 the plate 7L rearwardly of the slots i and 2' in the back edge portion of said plate and rods a mounted on said plate rearwardly of said keepers a and provided with tongues or prongs n which are adapted to be passed through the ends of said straps, and when put under strain the tongues or prongs a rest on the keepers 11?.
In practice, the fingers of the hand are passed through the strap m, asshown at 0, in Fig. 2, and the second and third fingers are passed through the strap as indicated at 0 in said figure, and the said straps may be tightened around the fingers by turning the shaft 7' in the proper direction, or this may be accomplished by releasing the pawl 7' from the ratchet j and employing the buckle devices a, but the adjustment of the straps 7c and m may best be effected by means of the shaft j I also provide the plate k with transverse pads 79 and p which are secured to the underside thereof in the plane of the straps 7c and m and which bear on the backs of the fingers of the hand, as shown in Fig. 2, and these pads 39 and 70 may consist of any suitable material and may be connected with the plate h in any desired manner, and the head f of the screw f is provided with a pointer r and the end of the sleeve a with scale marks r in connection with which the point r operates,
this will facilitate the manipulation of the It will be observed that the standard k is arranged diagonally on the plate h and the axis of the casing a is also diagonal of the plate k and the object of this arrangement of said parts is to hold the flexible shaft 9 out of contact with the arm of the operator, when the device is in use.
The operation or use of my improved vibratory device will be the same as others of its class, and this operation will be readily understood by those familiar with this class of devices.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a vibrator apparatus, a cylindrical casing composed of front and back members provided axially of the casing with coupling and bearing sleeves, the coupling and bearing sleeve of the front member extending into the casing, a vibrator shaft mounted in the coupling and bearing sleeve of the back member, an axially movable bearing mounted in the coupling and bearing sleeve of the front member and in the inner end of which the inner end of the vibrator shaft is rotatable, the outer end of said bearing being provided with a cam head, and a screw mounted in the outer end of the coupling and bearing sleeve of the front member and provided with a cam head which operates in connection with the cam head of the axially movable bearing, said vibrator shaft being also provided within said casing with a central slot in which is pivoted a curved arm the position of which is regulated by the longitudinal movement of the axially movable bearing, and said shaft being forced outwardly by a spring mounted in the sleeve in which it is axially movable.
