TGY DEVICE:
Specification of Letters Patent. I
t d Does 31.; 1 1, 2
Application filed September 30, 1912. Serial No. 723,003.
Be it known that I, OSCAR STEIN, a citizen of Austria, and residing at Bronx, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and usethe following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled-in the art to which it appertain's to make and use the same.
This invention relates to toy devices, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class designed to amuse both old and young; a further object being to provide an improvement on a device of this class on which Letters Patent were granted to Erazm Komar, March 14:, 1911, No. 986,578, and the invention described and claimed herein is fully disclosed in the following specification of which the accompanying" drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of my improved toy device ;Fig.'2-a similar view on an enlarged scale with part of the construction another;-Fig. 3 aplan view of the main Fig. 4 a bottom plan view thereof.
My improved toy device comprises a main or handle portion a constructed and provided, as hereinafter described, and a flying member I) detachable from the main or handle portion.
The main or handle portion (1 comprises a body a preferably cylindrical in form and preferably composed of wood or other fibrous material and provided with a central longitudinal bore a and with top and botby screws or in any other way, and the top and bottom platesc and d are. provided respectively with central apertures and d which communicate with the central bore than said bore. Mounted centrally in the bore a of the body a is a shaft re composed of top and bottomparts e and 6 one of said parts being provided with a reduced socket in the other part and is rotatable therein, or on which said otherpart is rotatable.
The bottom parte 'of the shaft e is provided with a cylindrical head 6 which fits in and is rotatable in fille ptififiilf Plate and Said '-'e s prov-idea ith transverse plate 6 the inner edge of wh'eh bears on the plate (I :illid (fpeifiites liii fc ii nection with raised-and.v OTU' ing in the same direction.) p r The outer end portion 0 part e ef the shaft 6 is provided with} l'lar e which fits in the aperture c of ann ls which and said body is piacedfiaasprhig dit which is preferably "secured to' sa'i'ddfihgei or thumb piece and which normally holds the pawl h in operative conn ectio ratchet wheel f.
The extension 6 oft-he pa shaft e is tubular in form and is groyilied in the end thereof with oppositel y -airraii'ged'hnd spirally formed recessesgi formingfbppositely arranged shoulders 2' .whibh ttaeednioppnsit directions, and the flyiiigiaiiemhemb ig-i vided with a stud pin .ij -sadaptetl: to ib'ei im serted into the end of saidfbxtensiome'l of the shaft member 6 and said stud 'pimis-"pro; vided with a transversegstopipimi adapted to the to operate in connectioniwitlrtheimeobsses i and shoulders i The' flying member t em crises-via! may portion: 6 preferably madeiinathesfohmiof; or to represent a bird, and said body portion is provided with radial wings b ound on the shaft 0 is a spiral spring is one end of which is secured to the part c of said shaft at is, and the other end of which is secured to the part c of 'said shaft at k, and as will be seen the plates 0 and (1 form bearings for the opposite end portions of the, shaft 6, and said opposite end portions of the shaft 0 are longitudinally movable one upon the other, but the spring 7: holds said parts of said shaft in proper relative position and this feature also permits of the winding up of the spring, the part c of said shaft having a slight longitudinal movement to permit of the cross plate 6 passing over the lugs (P.
The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in corsnectionwith the following statement thereof. The pawl it normally holds the part e? of the shaft e against rotation in one direction and by turning the head 6 of the part e to the right, said part 6 of said shaft will also be turned to the right and the spring is will be wound up, and when this operation is fully performed, the lugs d "prevent the backward rotation of the part c of said shaft. The st-u'd shaft j of the flying member i s inserted into the end e of the part e of the shafte, the ends of the stop pin 1? entering the. recesses z and bearing on the shoulders '5 'lVith the parts in this positiom-the thumbor finger piece h of the pawl niay be forced inwardly and said pawl released from the ratchet wheel f when the spring 7c wilt rapidly rotate the part c of theshaft e so as to throw off the flying member 6, the wings b of which are inclined in opposite directions, and said flying member will be projected into space and at the same time rapidly rotate and will soar in the'manner of other devices of this class.
My invention is not limited to any par ticular form of the flying member or the body portion thereof, and while said body portion, as shown, is designed to represent abird, the same may be made of an y form ,or to represent any object or thing.
Having fully describedmy invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,vis;- y
1. A toy device comprising a nain part or handle member and a tlq'ata-chable flying member, the main part or "handle member being composed of a body portion having a central longitudinal bore through which is fipassed a shaft composed of two parts ro- 'tatively connected, the separate parts of said shaft being provided with bearings .at the ends of thebody portion, a spiral spring wound on the said shaft within said body portion and the ends of which are connected with the separate parts of said shaft, one
end of said shaft being projected from the body portion and provided with a ratchet wheel, a spring operated pawl device connected with the body portion and operating in connection with said ratchet wheel, theother end of said shaft and corresponding end of the body portion being provided with means whereby said spring may be wound up and the end-of said shaft which projects from the body portion being tubular in form and provided with opposite spiral recesses forming shoulders, and the flying member being provided with a stud pin adapted to be inserted into the. projecting end of said shaft and having a transverse stop pin op erating in connection with said recess and shoulders.
2. In a toy device of theclass described, a body portion having a central longitudinal bore, a rotatable shaft mounted therein and composed of two rotatably connected parts, a spiral spring wound on said shaftand connected with each of said parts, means at one end of said shaft for winding up said spring, the other end of said shaft being provided with a ratchet wheel, a spring pawl operating in "connection with said ratchet wheel, and a flying member adapted to be detachably connected with said end of said shaft;
v, 3. In a toy device of. the class described,
a body portion having a central longitudinal bore and a shaft passing longitudinally therethrough, said shaft being composed of two parts rotatively connected, and a spiral spring wound on said's'haft and one end of which is connected with one part thereof and the opposite end wi th the' othe'r part, said parts of said shaft being' ja'lsoilongitudinally movable oneupo'jn'the 'other.
In testimony that-I claim theforego ng as my invention I have signed my name 1 n presence of the subscribing witnesses. this 25th day of September 1912 4 I i 17 OSCAR STEIN.
