GUSTAF B. NORDGREN, OF MUSKEGON, MICHIGAN.
COLLAPSIBLE COUCH-BED.
Application filed November 23, 1911.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, GUsTAr B. NORDGREN, a citizen of Sweden, residing at Muskegon, in the county of Muskegon and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Couch- Beds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in collapsible couch-beds and its object is to produce a device of this class that when folded or collapsed will constitute a compact, neat appearing chair or seat.
Other' objects are simplicity and durability.
lith the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described in the following specification, pointed out in the claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part of the specification and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved collapsible couch-bed in its collapsed position. Fig. 2 is a front elevation with a portion of the seat-curtain torn away. Fig'. 3 is a plan of thc device in its collapsed position. Fig. 4 is a rear elevation. Fig. 5 is a vertical section taken on line 5 5 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a plan of a portion of the device in its extended position. Fig. 7 is a plan, foreshortened, of the device in its extended position with the sectional hinged pad member omitted. Fig. 8 is a side elevation of the device in its extended position.
Like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
Each side of my improved collapsible couch-bed is formed of a set of lazy tongs 1 or Q which are connected by transverse braces 3 near their lower extremities and by transverse supports 4 located at approximately their vertical centers. Intermediate transverse supports 5 are provided between the supports 4 and are secured to the connected ends of companion links 6 whose opposite ends are secured to the links of the lazy tongs. The terminal link 7 of each set of lazy tongs is projected beyond the other link terminal and these links 7 are connected at their free extremities by a transverse brace S from which vertical Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Ano'. 12,1913.
serial No. 661,991.
braces 9 extend to the support 4 and are connected by a cross piece 10 and upon the framework so formed the headrest 11 is located.
To each terminal link at the opposite end of the lazy tongs a hollow trough-like arm 12 is pivotally secured; when the lazy tongs are closed or collapsed these arms, which are notched as at 13 at their free extremity to engage with the projected links 7, form chair arms for the seat or chair as shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 5 and when the tongs are extended they may be rested thereon as shown in Fig. 8. To the terminal links of the lazy tongs whereon the arms 12 are secured a transverse cushion-support 14 is secured so that its upper edge lies in a plane above the supports 4 and intermediate supports 5 and to the upper edge of the cushion support is hinged a cushion 15 provided on either lateral edge with a screw 17 that carries a slotted guide 16. 17 is a lug carried by the terminal link of the lazy tongs and upon the same the said guide travels; and the said cushion is further provided with a curtain 1S. To the transverse support 4 at the foot of the headrest 11 is hinged one end of a sectional hinged pad 19 that, when extended, rests upon the transverse supports 4 and intermediate supports 5 and extends to the hinged base of the cushion or seat 15 when the same is in the position shown in Fig. 8. To the lower edge of each of the supports 4 and intermediate supports 5 both of the rope supports 2O are secured, the ends of the said rope supports being secured to either transverse support 4 at either end of the lazy tongs to hold the device in operative position when extended.
What is claimed is 1n a collapsible couch-bed, two sets of lazy tongs connected to form a collapsible frame, transverse supports and intermediate transverse supports disposed between the said sets of lazy tongs, a headrest formed by the prolongation of one terminal link of each set of lazy tongs, a sectional pad hinged to one of the said transverse supports at the foot of the said headrest, a transverse cushion-support disposed between and connected to the terminal links of the lazy tongs remote from the aforesaid headrest, a hinged cushion carried by said cushion-support,
notched arms pivotally carried by terminal as my own I have hereto affixed my signalinks of the lazy tongs adjacent the said ture in the preseneeof tWo subscribing Witi0 cushion, slotted guides terminally carried by nesses. the saicl cushion operatively connected to the said sets of lazy tongs and rope supports connected to the said transverse supports and intermediate supports.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing GUSTAF B. NORDGREN.
