snsnrsnmo DEVICE.
A Specification oi Letters Patent. fgwnted ray 8; 1913 itpplioafioiz filed October, 1912. serial rt -whom.
Be .it known that '1, DAVID M. CAno, a citicleir, inuthe'comity of Essex endqstate Qfl New Jersey, have invented new and useful; Im roveinents'. in Sharpening Devicespof; WhICil the following is a specification.
' This invention relates to devices for sharpl ening cuttiri .instriiments,-such as the re movable his as of razors and the like, and it i is the primary object of the invention to'f provide a devlc'e of thischaracter which is simple and cheap construction and eiii-j cient in o er'etion.
j A further object of the invention is to providee device of this character which is not only adapted to sharpen 'ideshnving -oniy one cutting edge, buti't is: particularly, adapted to sharpen blades hiring wdo'uble'" cuttin edge, thatfiscutting edgeson oppo. site fe gesof 'thedblade, endl'to sini'ultane ously sharpen both edges! Y 1T2".

In carrying out the above objects I prof vide two pairs. of superposed'abrasive rolls,
synchronously rotated through suitable enringactuated b e. crunk connected to one of the rolls, a bin e carrying rocker extend-. ing longitudinally between the rolls having 7 cam followersto en age with a cam con nected to and rotatzib e with one roll of each pair to cause one side of 'acuttin' edge,to engage with one roll of a; pair a terfmitely with the enga 'ement oithe opposite side of the cutting c ge with its coi-npa'nionf'roll, means being provided to increase or decrezise the pressure withwhich the blade engages with the rolls; sziid rolls and blade carrier are journalcd ina casing consisting of a pair of hinged sections withonc' roll of each phir' journaled in each section, whereby the sharp-.- ening mechanism and blades are entirely inclosed during the shar ening operation preventing any liability 0 the accidental in ury of the operator.
In the drawing accompanying and forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is. a side elevation, partly in section, iilustrating an embodiment of my invention, and illustrating in dotted lines the tilting of the hinged section backward. Fig. 2 is a longitudinai sectional view taken substantially on the line A-A through thecasing of Fig. 1 and through one of the rolls. Fig. 3 is a. sectional end elevation taken on the line 13-13 of Fig; 21 gg jiis s perspective view of a blade cnrrier'ior carryi g.gj q bhide having a double cutting'edg .;1fig
is a. perspective view of ljilqdlfifid ftil ni o hhide'curner for carrying a blade hu'vin'g single cutting edge; and Fig. eis on; unti 5, ill'ustmtingn-blz 'dein section'therein.
Similar chnmcters of reference designate elevation of the. blade carrier shown inYFig.
like )arts throughout thediiferent'views of the rawing. In the drawing 1 have illustrated an en:- bodifnent of my invention, comprising we pairs of superposed rolls 7,7"11041 8; sfliii'xed to-axlest 9' a'ndlO, 10"whereby they are, Journuled in n casing consisting of a sectigui '1 1 in which the rolls 7 .and '8' areinonnted and a. section 12 hinged to the se'ctionli in which' the rolls'l-and 8 aremounted for a purpose to be hereinafter dc scribql; 3 Ther0 1 s are covered with it suithbjle abrasive f material 13, prefernblyflezrtherpiis shown in lfig. 2. The rolls are synchronously driven through a train of gearing; comprisingpmions 14, one fixed to the'uxie'of eiieh roll "and "eetui itedby njcrank I5" the axle of the roll 8 outsid'efof the'casizug;
A carrier. for the blades tm'be shiirpcned comprises, a bar 15 to extend. longitudinally of-and between the rolls, as shownlin' Figs.
Land 3, said bar having reduced ends, as at 16, whereby it is supported in recess portions in the ea'sing sectioing in" openings in'spring clips-'H'fixer to the outside of the case.
11 with the ends on rig?- I This bargfn'iay. be provided with projections 18 f0r 'supporting a' blade 19, such for instance as the.('1ril lette razor blade having two cutting edges and provided with the"usiial openings in which these projections mny engage. The
blade is returned in position by 1 spring clip 01' pin passing through -a' transi eise' opening in the central pin. These carriers may be interchangeable'and-are readily removable by pressing outward on the clips 17, as shown n dotted lines in Fig. 2, releasing the same. as 19", having only one cutting edge this bar may be provided with a spring clip 20',
When, supporting a. razor blade,
(Figs. 5 and 6,) with the blade clumped hetween said clip and the barns clearly shown in said figures.
To rock the carrier and thereby the razor so as to alternately present one side of the cutting edge is the action of one roii of a pair and then the opposite side of the cutting edge to its companion roll, I provide said carrier with a pair of oppositely extending arms 21 which are in the nature of cam-followers adapted to engage with cams 22, 23 fixed to the rolls and rotatable therea The operation of my improved device is.
substantially as follows: Assuming it is desired to sharpen a razor blade having two cutting edges of the Gillette type. The cover section of the casing is tilted backward as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, when the blade is adjusted on the carrier pins 18. The cover section is new again caused to engage with the lower section 11 and retained in such position by a spring catch 25. By rotating the crank in the direction of the arrow the rolls through the gearing are rotated in the direction of the arrows or outward from the cutting edges of the blade. As the crank is rotated one side of one cutting edge of the blade is sides of the cutting edges are caused to en'- age with the rolls 7 8' during the succeedmg 180 degrees of revolution, and vice versa. The forcible enga ement of the blade with 0 the rolls is'c aused by'the timing of the cams 22, 23. When the cam follower screw is on the high portion of the cam 23, the camfollower screw for the other cam 22 is on the low portion, and vice versa, as clearly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3. In order to removethe blade the cover section 12 is again tilted up when the blade may be readily removed and-another substituted. hen sharpening blades having only one cutting ed e the carriershown in Fig. 5 is utilized. 0 remove or. substitute a blade the entire carrier may be removed, which can bereadily done by releasing the spring clips 17.
' To preventretrograde or reverse moveof superposed rolls may be utilized, but it ispret'erable to provide two pairjof rolls so as to permit of the simultaneous sharpening of both edges of a blade having a double cutting edge and thereby facilitate the sharpening of blades of this type.
If desired my device may be utilized as a combined honing and stropping device, for
which purpose each pair of rolls is provided with a ditterent abrasive surface. For instance, one pair of rolls, such as 7, 7 may be adapted for stropping, and may or may not be provided with an abrasive material;
that is, the leather covering may be oiled, or
provided with oil and a very finely comminu'ted or powdered abrasive material, such as powdered emery, carborundum and the like; while the leather. covering of the .rolls 8, 8 is provided with a coarser abrasive material and serves for honing purposes.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of my invention and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
Having thus described my invention I claim:
A sharpening device for double edged cutting blades, comprising in combination two pairs of superposed abrasive rolls; a crank connected to one of the rolls; a train of gearing connected to the rolls whereby to.
rotate all of the rolls from the roll to which the crank is connected; a blade carrying rocker projecting between thefrolls; a cam connected to and rotatable with the lower roll of eachpair; and cam. followers connected to the blade carrier to rock the carrier as the rolls are rotated to cause one side of each cuttingedgeof the blade to engage with one roll of each pair alternately with the engagement of the opposite side of each cutting edge with the other roll of each pair.
