Thisinvention relates to blade condition.- ing devices such as knife or razor sharpen,- ing or honing devices.
According tothis invention the device com` prises a stationary blade holder and a strop or hone adapted to be drawn to and fro over the edge of the blade which is automatically reversed through the rocking ofthe holder as the direction of movement of the strop or hone is reversed. Y The invention 'is particularly applicable to devices Which comprise a case or box having a sliding lidon which is carrieda strop or hone against Which the edge of a blade mounted on a rotatable kaxis in the box, is pressed as the lid is moved to andfro along the box, the blade being turned automatically inthe required direction as the sliding movementofthe lid is reversed.
Further, according tothe present invention the lid of the box is so constructed that WhichA is being sharpened"'inlwhichever direction the lid is being moved,"it also causes the blade to be moved, zig-zag across the strop or hone. f n
Conveniently the to and fro yor zig-ZagA movement is imparted to the blade holder and therefore to the vblade by a cam-path arranged alongside the strop or hone on the lid of the box. 1 f Y Referring to the vvaccompanying draw-` in szigFig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of a device `constructed in accordance with or embodying the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a cross sectional elevation of the device shown in Fig. 1;
Y Fig. 3 is a vplan of the device shown in` Figs. 1 and 2 but With the lid or cover removed.
Figgtis an inverted plan of the lid or cover separately and f y Fig. 5 is an-invertedplan of a modified construction of lid. Y Y Fig. 6 is a part sectional elevation showing a further modicationof the invention.W
zag movement across the strop or hone.
Mounted in the body-ofthe boxV or case A near one end thereof is an axle B the ends of Whichproject through the opposite sides of the case. Mountedvon the axle B is a holder C for a razor blade D. Toothed pinions E are secured'to the axle B at each end of the blade holder C.
. Mounted upon posts F secured to the bottom of the case vA is anaxle F1 uponfvvhich are carried toothed sectors or discs @which gear With the pinions E. 1 f' r.["he posts F maybe carried on springs or spring supports.
The lid A1 of the boxfor case A is furnished on its inner or under Ysurface with the strop or hone H and has rims A2 the lower edges of whichareinturned to yembrace flanges A3 on the upper edges of the side Walls of the case. f'
When the lid is slid along the top of the box fromv right to leftas shoWninFig. l the strop or hone H presses against vthe plain or untooted portions of the discs Gr and causes them torotate a certain distance and they in turn rotate the pinions E and so turn the holder C to bring theV edge of one side of the blade D into contact with the holder. f f
The lnumber and position of the teeth on the discs Gr are so. arranged that the rotation of the pinionsv is stopped when the edge of the blade is brought into proper contact With Vthe strop or hone. When thelid has been oftheblade Dinto Contact with the strop n i or hone. y
In order to prevent injury to the blade by the premature rotation of the fdiscs G and pinions E,When the lid is being placed` in position, the strop or hone H is out away at the parts. 7L as shown in Fig. 4.
50 In the embodiment illustrated inFigs.' l `Thus far described the strop Willsimply be drawn over the edges of the blade as the latter is pressed against it, but as already stated, in the arrangement illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4 a Zig-zag or to and fro movement is given to the blade in a direction across the strop.
This zig-Zag movement is imparted by cam surfaces J J1 formed on the faces of the inturned edges of the lid A1 (see Figs. 2 and 4). p
The cam surfacesJ Il are so arranged that the crests of, say, the cam surface J are opposite the hollows of the cam surface J1.
These cam surfaces bear against 'the ends ofthe axle B so they impartan endwise movement to this axle and hence to the blade holder AC as the lid is moved to and fro along the box.
In place of being moved positively to and from by two cam surfaces, the axle may be moved in one direction fby a cam surface and in the other direction by a spring acting preferably against the endl of one of the toothedlpinonson the shaft of the blade carrier.
When the zigzag or to and fro movement of the carrier is not desired the cams J J14 are omitted and the lid is formed with plane. edges as shown in Fig. 5. In this case also the ends of the shafts of the blade carrier may be shortened.
#In order to prevent the lid from being accidently withdrawn there is provided on y one or both walls of the box a spring-controlled `stopK which is adapted to be engaged by a pin or shoulder A4 on the lid.
The device is primarily intended'for use with blades for safety razors, but it is to be understood that itis equally suitable for other blades. r
Further'the invention may beapplied to a safety razor without removing the blade from the razor as shown in Fig. 6. In this,
fork 13in which a rotatable axle 14 carry-p ing a clip 15 for holding the blade 16 is mounted. One end of the axle is fitted with a pinion 17. The shaving position of the blade is shown in dotted lines. When it is desired to strop the blade, the razor is placed in the case with the ends of the axle 14 resting in slots 2O in the case, one only being shown, and the fork 13 is raised to bring the pinion 17 into engagement with a single toothed disc` G. Two discs G are unnecessary in this arrangement. A pin 18 may be provided for limiting the movement of the fork in the stropping position. The fork is strop-carrying device is mounted to move to yand fro relatively to the holder and also to impart a'zifg-zag movement `to the blade-carrier and effect the reversal of the blade at 'the' proper' time.
Having thus describedthe nature of my said invention and the/best means I know of carrying'the same into practical elfect I claim i l. In a blade conditioning device and in combination, a casing, a sliding lid, blade conditioning `means von the lid, a rotatable axis in the casing, a reversible blade holder on the axis,rpinions on the axis, toothed discs gearing withthe pinions rotatably mounted in the casing, and a cam surface on the sliding lid adapted to move the blade holder to and fro `across the blade conditioning means. as the lid is moved.
2. In a blade conditioning devicefor safety razor bladesv and in combination, a box, a sliding lid forl completely closing the box, blade conditioning` means on the inside of the lid, a rotatable axle in the box, two pinions on the axle, a blade holder .on the axle and two toothed discs rotatably mounted in the box and engaging the pinions on the axle, said'discs being rotated by the friction of the sliding lid to bring a blade in the blade holder into contact `with. the blade conditioning means on the lid.;v
B. In a blade conditioning device for safetyrazorblades and in combination, a box, a sliding lid for completely closing the box, blade conditioning means on the inside of the lid,.arotatable axle in the box, a reversible blade holder on they axle, and means on the inside of the sliding lid adapted to make contact with the ends of the rotatable axle ,forV giving the blade holder a to and fro 5. A blade conditioning device for safety razor blades. comprising a box holding a safety razor complete with blade and hav ing a sliding lid carrying blade conditioning means on the inside.' thereof, a pivoted blade holder on the razor,V toothed gearingfbetween Y the blade holden and the lid so that when the lid is moved the blade edge is brought into Contact with the conditioning means on the lid and mechanism on the lid for moving'the blade holder to and fro acrosskthe path of the conditioning means.v
In testimony `whereof I have signed my Y name to this specification.
