7 Claims.
My invention relates to combined safety razors and sharpeners, and the objects of my invention are:
First, to provide a safety razor which incorporates a sharpener for its razor blade mounted on the head of the safety razor;
Second, to provide a device of this class which though incorporating a sharpening means need not be constructed appreciably larger than the conventional razor blade head, thus providing a particularly compact structure;
Third, to provide a device of this class whereby the razor blade is sharpened by releasing the tension thereon and rotating the razor blade between the sharpening elements;
Fourth, to provide a device of this class in which the razor blade may be readily and quickly removed or inserted with the ease of the conventional safety razor, the sharpening elements in no manner interfering with this operation;
Fifth, to provide a device of this class in which the mere turning of a knob at the extremity of the handle not only rotates the blade so as to sharpen it but also operates the clamping element so as to secure the blade in place after it has been sharpened;
Sixth, to provide a device of this class in which the several parts may be readily and quickly cleaned or sterilized so that the razor may be maintained in a sanitary condition; and
Seventh, to provide on the whole a novelly constructed safety razor and sharpener which is particularly simple and economical of manufacture, easily operated and which will not readily deteriorate or get out of order.
With these and other objects in view as will appear hereinafter, my invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the characters of reference thereon which form a part of this application, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my combined safety razor and sharpener; Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view thereof through 2--2 of Fig. 1 with parts and portions shown in elevation to facilitate the illustration; Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view thereof through 33 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a sectional view thereof similar to Fig. 2 except that the cap or cover member is shown in its raised position and the blade extending transversely and also showing by dotted lines the raised position of the cover; Fig. 5
is a sectional view thereof through 55 of Fig. 4; Fig. 6 is another sectional View thereof through 6-6 of Fig. 4, and Fig.7 is a fragmentary sectional view of the razor blade supporting member, illustrating particularly the cam arrangement therein.
Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts and portions throughout the several views of the drawing.
Handle head member 2, cover member 3, end plates i and 5, hinge pin 6, stem 7, knob 8, razor blade support 9, razor blade it, tension spring H, springs l2 and i3, and sharpening elements M, constitute the principal parts and portions of my novel combined safety razor and sharpener.
The safety razor is provided with a handle i similar in outward appearance to the conventional razor handle. One end of the handle I terminates in a head member 2 which is of sufficient length and width to receive a conventional razor blade. The head 2 is provided with a centrally disposed longitudinally extending channel 200. The sides of the channel 2a are bordered at their upper margins by lip portions 21), the extended edges of which are provided with guard teeth 20, similar to the conventional razor.
The top or extended side of the head member 2 is provided with a cover member 3. The outer surface of the cover member 3 is curved transversely so as to form beveled side margins 3a adapted to engage a razor blade positioned between the head member and cover. The cover member 3 is provided with a longitudinally extending channel 31) therein corresponding to the channel 2a.
At its ends the cover member 3 is provided with a pair of downwardly extending end plates 4 and 5 which pass beyond the ends of the head member 2. The end plates are somewhat narrower than the top and head members, these members being notched at their corners. The end plates are provided with stiffening walls on their side margins which fit in the notched portions. The end plate i is provided at its lower portion in its side wall with hinge slots 4a which fit over the ends of a hinge pin 6 extending across one end at the lower side of the head member 2. This arrangement allows for vertical movement of the cover member within predetermined limits as well as pivotal movement thereof. The other plate 5 terminates in a catch 500 at its lower end adapted to fit under the corresponding end of the head member 2, as shown best in Figs. 2 and 4. When the catch to engages the head 2 the cover member 3 is spaced upwardly therefrom, as shown the support 9 and stem 5.
in Fig. 4, so as to provide clearance for rotation of the razor blade as will be described hereinafter.
The handle l is provided with a bore therethrough which receives a stern I, the lower end of which protrudes from the handle I and is provided with a turning knob 8. At its end adjacent the head member 2 the bore of the handle I is enlarged forming a socket la. The stem 1 is provided with a flanged portion la which fits in the base of the socket and coacts with the knob 8 to confine the stem to a rotary movement.
Above the flange ia the socket la clears the stem 7 and is adapted to receive the sleeve portion 9a of a razor blade support 9. The lower or extended portion of the sleeve 9a is spaced from the stem I while the upper portion thereof is constricted so as to fit snugly around said stem. At the shoulder between the constricted and enlarged portions of the sleeve 9a there is formed a cam and catch means comprising a stop lug 9b projection downwardly into the enlarged portion of the sleeve and a cam like recess 90 formed axially in the shoulder at one side of the lug 9b. The stem 7 is provided with a pin lb which follows the shoulder so as to engage either side of the lug 9b and to pass into the recess 90, as will be described hereinafter.
The upper end of the sleeve 9a joins a plate portion 9d in the form of a pair of radiating arms, diametrically disposed. These arms are provided with upwardly directed bosses 9e near their extremities which fit into a pair of apertures lea provided near the extremities of a conventional razor blade lil. Such a blade also has a centrally disposed aperture lt'b through which extends the upper extremity of the stem i. This extremity is provided with threads 'lc preferably double pitch threads, which are adapted to engage corresponding threads provided in the central portion of the cover member 3.
The cover member 3 is provided with a tension spring I l secured by one end at one extremity of the channel 319. The tension spring extends at first centrally and downwardly from its secured end, and then forms an 8 portion Ha terminating in yieldable contact with the upper side of the razor blade it), then continuing across the center of the razor blade, there being here provided a suitable slot I lb, then forming into a second 8 portion I la, and continuing therefrom in a curve to the opposite end of the channel 3b, as shown best in Figs. 2 and 4.
Secured with the tension spring H is a second spring l2 which extends along the channel 319 and is slotted so that the portions lia and l lc of the tension spring ll may project downwardly therethrough. A similar spring It is secured to the opposite end of the channel la so as to ex- I tend therealong in the opposite direction to the spring 52. The latter spring is also provided with a slot intermediate its ends so as to clear The free extremities of the springs l2 and it support sharpening elements i l. The sharpening elements are formed of material having sufficient hardness and other suitable characteristics for sharpening the razor blade edges. The sharpening elements taper silghtly from their extended ends towards the central portion of the razor and are curved on their operating faces in such a manner as to present to the rotating razor blade the proper angle for sharpening.
Operation of my novel combined safety razor and sharpener is as follows: When the razor is in use its marginal portions are clamped between the head member 2 and the cover member 3 in a manner similar to the conventional safety razor. When in this position the threads 10 are screwed into the internally threaded boss 30, the sharpening elements are held in their respective channels 2a or 31) by the ends of the razor blade and support. When the knob 8 is turned in the direction to release the cover said cover raises from the head 2 until limited by the catch 5a and slots 4a, that is from the position shown in Fig. 2 to the position shown in Fig. 4. Continued turning of the knob 8 after the screw threads 'lc are disengaged causes the razor blade to rotate.
It should be here noted that when the cover is in its locked position, shown in Fig. 1, the pin lb is within the recess portion 90 of the support 9 so that the arm portions 9d of the razor blade support register with and fit into the channel 2a so as to properly position the razor blade with respect to the head and cover. Initial turning of the knob 8 allows the razor blade to raise a slight distance as the cover is raised so that when the cover reaches its elevated position the razor blade is disposed midway between the head and cover so that its extremities may rotate through the slits formed therebetween. The razor blade howover does not begin to rotate until the knob 8 has been turned almost a complete revolution; this movement being sufiicient to remove the cover from the stem.
As the razor blade H] is rotated its edges pass over one of the sharpening elements and under the other sharpening element with a wiping and circular movement so as to provide a keen edge.
When it is desired to remove the blade it is only necessary to turn the knob 8 until the cover is released and the blade is disposed transversely, as shown in Fig. 5, whereupon the catch 5a may bedisengaged from the head 2 and the cover rotated on the hinge pin 6, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 4, whereupon the razor blade may be lifted from the support and a new blade substituted, or the various parts may be readily and quickly rinsed as needed.
In order to ensure proper alinement of the cover in its elevated position, the lower end of the plate 4 may be provided with a lug 4b which engages the under side of the head 2 at the same time as the catch 511.
Though I have shown and described a particular construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions, I do not wish to be limited to this particular construction, combination and arrangement, but desire to include in the scope of my invention the construction, combination and arrangement substantially as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A combined razor and sharpener comprising, a pair of clamp members arranged to hold a razor blade therebetween and expose the margins thereof, said clamp members forming a shaving guard for said razor blade, sharpening elements mounted within said clamp members at opposite sides of said razor blade, and means for causing revoluble movement of said razor blade.
2. A combined razor and sharpener comprising, a pair of clamp members arranged to hold a razor blade therebetween and expose the margins thereof, said clamp members forming a shaving guard for said razor blade, sharpening elements mounted within said clamp members at opposite sides of said razor blade, a handle extending from one of said clamp elements, a stem mounted therein and revolubly supporting said razor blade so as to rotate said razor blade relative to said sharpening elements.
3. A combined razor and sharpener comprising, a pair of clamp members arranged to hold a razor blade therebetween and expose the margins thereof, said clamp members forming a shaving guard for said razor blade, sharpening elements mounted within said clamp members at opposite sides of said razor blade, means for shifting said clamp members to and from each other, and a revoluble support for said razor blade operatively associated with said means for rotating said razor blade across said sharpening elements.
4. A combined razor and sharpener comprising, a pair of centrally recessed clamp members arranged to engage the marginal portions of a razor blade at opposite sides thereof and forming a shaving guard therefor, sharpening elements and yieldable supports therefor mounted in the recesses, and engageable with said razor blade, means for releasing said clamp members, and means for rotating said razor blade between said clamp members when released whereby the margins of said razor blade traverse said sharpening elements.
5. A combined razor and sharpener comprising, a pair of centrally recessed clamp members arranged to engage the marginal portions of a razor blade at opposite sides thereof and forming a shaving guard thereof, sharpening elements and yieldable supports therefor mounted in the recesses and engageable with said razor blade, means for releasing said clamp members, a support for said razor operatively associated with said means, and a tension member for retaining said razor blade on said support when said clamp members are released.
6. A combined razor and sharpener comprising, a handle, a head member traversing one end of said handle, a cover loosely hinged to said head member, a stem revolubly mounted in said handle including screw means engageable with said cover for drawing said cover against said head member, a razor blade rotatably associated with said stem and adapted to fit between said head member and cover, and sharpening elements carried by said head member and cover, said razor blade adapted to be rotated across said sharpening elements while in engagement with said sharpening elements.
7. A combined razor and sharpener comprising, a handle, a head member traversing one end of said handle, a cover loosely hinged to said head member, a stem revolubly mounted in said handle including screw means engageable with said cover for drawing said cover against said head member, a razor blade rotatably associated with said stem and adapted to fit between said head member and cover, said head member and cover provided with recesses therein, and sharpening elements and yieldable supports therefor mounted in said recesses and engageable with the edges of said razor blade when said razor blade is rotated.
