Description

July 2, 1968 A. A. MAGRINI 3,390,489
RAZOR BLADE SHARPENER Filed June 28, 1965 INVEN TOR Ang and A/Maqr/ni ATTORNEY.
United States Patent 3,390,489 RAZOR BLADE SHARPENER Armand A. Magrini, 2204 Market St., Youngstown, Ohio 44507 Filed June 28, 1965, Ser. No. 467,603 3 Claims. (Cl. 51-158) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to a razor blade sharpener and more particularly to an improved inexpensive device which will hone the edges of double-edged razor blades.
The principal object of the invention is the provision of a cylindrical device having an inner honing surface and a member rotatable relative thereto for holding a doubleedged razor blade.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a razor blade sharpening device that will move a doubleedged razor blade relative to a curved honing surface in a manner to alternately increase and decrease the tension of the edges of the blade relative to the honing surface.
A fur her object of the invention is the provision of a simple and inexpensive razor blade sharpening device which may be formed of three inexpensive parts and as sembled and used conveniently and easily.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a razor blade sharpening device incorporating a section of glass tubing and a pair of molded plastic parts, one of which forms a cap for one end of the tubing and the other of which comprises a body member insertable in said tubing and having means for positioning a razor blade relative to the interior of said tubing thereon.
The razor blade sharpener disclosed herein comprises a simple and eflicient device for moving a double-edged razor blade relative to a smooth honing surface, such as the interior of a glass cylinder, so that the edges of the razor blade will be re-sharpened and honed, and the razor blade thus be made suitable for further use.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being the intention to cover all changes and modifications of the example of the invention herein chosen for purposes of the disclosure, which do not constitute departures from the spirit and scope of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of the razor blade sharpening device and a razor blade in position thereon.
FIGURE 2 is an exploded side elevation of the razor blade sharpening device.
FIGURE 3 is a vertical section on line 3-3 of FIG- URE 2.
FIGURE 4 is a side elevation of a portion of the razor blade sharpening device seen in FIGURE 2.
FIGURE 5 is a vertical section on line 5--5 of FIG URE 2.
By referring to the drawings and FIGURE 1 in particular, it will be seen that the razor blade sharpening device comprises a section of glass tubing having an end cap 11 on one end thereof and a longitudinal body member 12 positioned within the section of tubing 10, the longitudinal body member 12 having an integral, enlarged 3,390,48h Patented July 2, 1968 flanged disc 13 on one end thereof. A longitudinally extending raised boss 14 is formed on the longitudinal body member 12 and is of a size and shape arranged to receive a razor blade of the double-edged type thereover so as to position the razor blade firmly against a flat surface 15 of the longitudinal body member 12.
The longitudinal body member 12 is formed offccnter with respect to the integral flanged disc 13, and it has a groove 16 in the opposite end thereof, as seen in FIG- URES 2 and 4 and 5 of the drawings, which is arranged to register with a raised ring or annular flange 17 on the inner surface of the end cap 11 and which annular ring is offcenter with respect to the end cap 11.
By referring to FIGURE 2 of the drawings wherein an exploded view is seen, it will be observed that the section of glass tubing 10 is preferably formed with an annular rim 18 about the righthand end thereof as seen in FIGURE 2, which is the end into which the longitudinal body member 12 is positioned with the razor blade mounted thereon. The flanged disc portion 13 of the longitudinal body member 12 has an annular flange 19 thereabout which engages the rim 18 and etfectively locates the longitudinal body member relative to the inner surface of the section of glass tubing 10. The end cap 11 is frictionally engaged on the other end of the section of glass tubing 10, as illustrated in FIGURE 1 of the drawings.
In operating the device, the longitudinal body member 12 with its integral flanged disc 13 is removed from the section of glass tubing 10 and in completely removed position it will appear as illustrated in FIGURE 4. The razor blade is then positioned on the raised boss 14 and flat against the flat surface 15 of the longitudinal body member 12, and the longitudinal body member 12 repositioned within the section of glass tubing 10 so that the annular offcentered groove 16 in the one end thereof registers with the annular flange 17 in the end cap 11, which is also oifcenter with respect to the end cap 11. A small amount of water is then positioned in the device, and the integral flanged disc 13 revolved alternately clockwise and counterclockwise in a reciprocating motion causing the raised boss 14 to move in an arc and therefore moving the doublecdged razor blade, indicated by the letters RB in FIGURE 5, relative to the inner surface of the section of glass tubing 10.
It will thus be seen that the double-edged razor blade will be moved back and forth with its sharpened edges being in tensioned relation to the inner cylindrical surface of the section of glass tubing 10, and additionally the offcenter arrangement of the longitudinal body member 12 will cause the tension on the edges of the razor blade RB to be varied as the blade is moved back and forth.
It will also be obvious that the device can easily be held in one hand and the flanged disc 13 moved in the turning reciprocal motion heretofore referred to easily and quickly so as to accomplish the desired sharpening of the razor blade. At such time as the blade is sharpened on one side, the longitudinal body member 12 is removed, the blade is turned over and replaced in the device and the sharpening continued until both sides of both edges of the razor blade RB are suitably honed, whereupon the razor blade can be remove-d and re-used.
It will thus be seen that a razor blade sharpening device meeting the several objects of the invention has been disclosed and having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A razor blade sharpening device comprising a cylindrical member having a honing surface on the interior thereof, a longitudinal body member removably positioned in said cylindrical member and rotatable relative thereto, a flat surface on said longitudinal body member, a raised boss on said flat surface for mounting a razor blade, said fiat surface and raised boss arranged to locate said razor blade in tensioned relation to said honing surface, said longitudinal body member having an inwardly flanged disc on one end, forming a closure and providing means for manually rotating said longitudinal body memher and razor blade, and a cap forming a secondary closure for the opposite end of said cylindrical body member.
2. The. razor blade sharpening device set forth in claim 1 and wherein said cap has an annular raised configuration thereon and wherein said longitudinal body member has means registering with said annular raised configuration for supporting and guiding said longitudinal body member in rotating motion.
3. The razor blade sharpening device set forth in claim 1 and wherein said disc and annular flange on said longitudinal body member are oilcenter with respect to said longitudinal body member and "wherein a circular configuration is formed on said cap offcenter thereof and matchd ing configurations are formed on said longitudinal body member for engaging said circular configuration and supporting said longitudinal body member in offcenter relation to said cylindrical body member.
