Description

May 26, 1942. K. PARK 2,284,535
SHARPENING OR nomm APPLIANCE Filed Aug. 8, 1940 Patented May 26, 1942 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Application August 8, 1940, Serial No. 351,808 In Great Britain August 12, 1939 1 Claim.
This invention relates to a blade sharpening or honing appliance particularly for use in re newing or improving the cutting edges of safety razor and like blades.
The primary object of this invention is to provide a sharpening device of simple construction and one which can be carried on the person or which will occupy a small space in personal luggage. A further object is to provide a sharpener having a minimum of moving parts and still being of efficient operation.
With these and other objects which will be apparent from the following specification, the invention may be said to comprise essentially a blade sharpening or honing appliance comprising a handle for holding in the hand, a cylindrical sharpening element mounted so as to project from one end of the holder, the said sharpening element or elements being mounted on the handle so as to be freely rotatable.
The sharpening element is preferably constructed of glass but the invention also contemplates the use of other materials possessing suitable sharpening quali-ties as, for example, carborundum.
In order that this inventionv may be clearly understood, reference is now directed to the accompanying drawing wherein the sole figure represents a front elevational view of a preferred embodiment of the sharpening appliance.
Referring to the drawing in detail, a preferred embodiment; of the invention is provided with a holder, formed of metal or a hardened moulded synthetic resinous compound, and comprises a handle I and an arm 2 extending therefrom, parallel to but in a difierent plane from said handle I. The arm 2 is provided with an inturned flange or lip 3 at that end remote from the handle l so as to form, in conjunction therewith, a seating in which is mounted the rotatable sharpening element.
The sharpening element is constituted by a cylindrical rod of glass 4 having a smooth, hard surface. Each end of the glass rod 4 is fixedly set in a cup or like member 5 from the base of each of which projects a pin 6, said pins 6 bein adapted to engage in sockets 1, formed in the inturned flange 3 and handle I respectively of the holder. The edges of the cups 5 are preferably milled to facilitate rotation of the sharpening element. Preferably, as shown, the cylindrical sharpening element is mounted with its axis aligned with the handle.
In practice, the object to be sharpened is applied to and brought into contact over the whole length of its cutting edges, with the surface of the glass rod 4, the said rod revolving under the sharpening action.
I claim:
In a portable blade sharpening appliance, a substantially elongated handle member, a supporting element comprising a relatively long leg attached at a first end thereof to an end of said handle member and further comprising a short leg formed substantially perpendicular to said long leg at the second end thereof, said long leg being offset with reference to said handle memher, a substantially cylindrical abrasive element, a pair of cup members respectively fixedly carried on the ends of said cylindrical element'and carrying axial pins, the end of said handle element and. said short leg being provided with sockets adapted to freely rotatably receive said pins and to position said cylindrical element with its axis aligned with said handle member.
