To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE BROWNING, a
sub-ject of the King of England, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Safety Razor, of which the following is a description:
My invention belongs to that general class of devices known as razors and especially to that class of razors more particularly known as safety razors and is of the type in which a reciprocating blade'is mounted upon a suitable head or carrier. The invention has among its objects the production of a device of the kind described, that is' simple, convenient, durable, attractive, efficient and satisfactory for use wherever found applicable. It has particularly as an'ob ject the production of an exceedingly simple construction of few parts, which will be'particularly convenient in use. Many other objects and advantages of the construction herein shown and described will be obvious to those skilled in the art, from the disclosure herein given.
To this end my invention consists of the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.

Referring' to the drawings, my improved razor consists of a head plate 0r body part 1,
of my imvpreferably formed with an extending part 2at-the backedge, to which the'handle 3 is secured,.the handle .being of the desired size vand length, and, as shown, formed with knul-led' portion 4 so thatthe same may be firmly rasped. The handle may be made detacha le if desired. `The body part of plate 1 is preferably formed with the eX- tending parts or flanges 6 6 at each side of the part 2 in which are formed bearings for the roller 7. The roller 7 is provided with the supporting shaft or parts 5-5, one of which is formed with a bearing portion 8 at one endl to engage the flange 6. The opposite end of the roller may be pivotally or rotatably supported at the adjacent flange 6 by means of a screw 9, or equivalent means for the purpose, having a portion enga in the end of the adjacent part 5. As shwng, the roller 7 is formed with cam faces 10 at the ends for engagement 'with the cooperating blade, as hereafter set forth. I prefer to cut away the plate 1, as indicated at 12, in a series of notches so as to form the projecting parts or teeth 11 which come in contact with the face.
Carried by the plate 1, at preferred points, are the desired number of projecting lugs 15 which may be formed integrally with the plate or, as shown, inserted, the sameprojecting from the plate a distance slightly greater than the thickness of the blade. This is a detail in the construction which may be varied as found desirable. rIhe blade consists of a plate 17 which is preferably substantially thin and formed with a cutting edge 18 and with slotted openings 19 of a size to fit the lugs 15. The blade 17 is, of course, constructed of a suitable material which will hold a cutting edge. The lugs or y, pins 15' and the openings 19 forman interengaging .connection between the head and.

ders or prongs 22 which are arranged to engage with the cam faces 10 at the ends of the roller 7. As will be clear byreferring to Figures 1 and 3, the cam faces 1() are oppositely formed so that as roller is rotated, the same engaging faces 21 on the blade causes the blade to be reciprocated back and-forth C lengthwise. The bla-de is maintained in place by a clamping member .or plate 24 which, inthe construction shown, is so mounted on the device that it may be quickly and easily detached for removing or replacing of the blade at such times as may be desired. I have shown the clamping member 24 provided with notches as indicated at 25 so as to form the projecting prongs 26, the same being also preferably notched or cut away a sat 27. Mounted on the plate 1 and preferably extending substantially centrally each of the lugs 15, is a pin or stem 29 which carries a head 28 arrangedy to overlie the plate 24 and retain the same in place, the

plate resting or bearing upon the lugs 15. The stems 29 may bercontrolled in any suitable manner, preferably by means of springs 3l, or the equivalent. In the construction shown, each of the springs 31 is arranged within a chambered part secured on the stem and bears against the end of the chambered part and a filler member 32. The spring tends to maintain the stems 29 and the heads 28 so as to firmly secure the clamping plate 24 in place. The purpose of the iller block 432 is to so cooporate with the chambered part 30 that the spring is entirely inclosed. ,v

All of the parts are easily accessible and consequently may be easily dried.
Having thus described' my invention, it
is obvious that various immaterial modifica-tions may be made in the same without departing from the spiritpof my invention, hence I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact construction, arrangement, combination of parts or uses mentioned. i
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A razor comprising a handle, a head .mounted at 'one fend of said handle and a longitudinally slidable blade mounted upon said head at the side opposite said handle, means for attaching said blade thereto, in
' ,combination with a roller mounted upon said head on the side adjacent to and .beyond said blade holder, said blade being engageable with said roller whereby the blade is reciprocated upon rotation of the roller.
2. In a razor of the kind described and in combination, a handle, a head mounted at oneend of said handle, comprising as substantially flat plate extending transversely thereof, a blade mounted upon said head at the side opposite said handle, means for slidably attaching said blade thereto', a roller mounted upon said head on the side adjacent to and beyond said plate, said blade being engageable with said roller at the ends whereby the blade is reciprocated upon rotation of the roller.
3. In a razor of the kind described and in combination, a handle, a head mounted at one end of said handle comprising a substantially flat plate rigidly secured near the center of its lengthto said handle, and extending transversely thereof, a longitudinally slidable blade mounted upon said head at the side opposite said handle, means for detachably securing said blade thereto, a roller mounted upon said head on the side adjacent to and beyond said blade holder and constructed with means for directly contacting with and engaging said blade, whereby upon rotation of the roller `the blade is reciprocated.
,4. In a razor of the kind described and in combination, a handle, a head mounted at one end of said handle, a blade mounted vgaging said blade at its ends, whereby the blade is reciprocated upon rotation of the roller.
5. In a razor of the kind described and in combination, a handle, a head mounted at one end of said handle ycomprising a substantially flat lplate rigidly secured to said handle and extending transversely thereof, with a longitudinally slidable blade mounted upon said head at the side oppositev said handle, said blade provided with slots therein, pins projecting from said head,'sleeves on said pins and projecting beyond said head 8. In a device of the kind described and in combination, a handle, a head mounted at one end of said handle comprising a sub'- stantially flat head plate rigidly secured to and extending transversely thereof, with a longitudinally slidable blade mounted upon said head at the side opposite said handle and provided with slots therein, yieldable pins projecting from said head plate, sleeves on said pins, said sleeves projecting beyond said head plate a distance slightly greater than the thickness of said blade and engaging said blades in said slots, means for securing said plate in place on t-he head and in yieldable engagement with said pins and the outer ends of said sleeves, and a roller mounted upon said head at the rear of said blade and having cam faces at each of its ends, and means upon and integral with the blade at each end thereof for engaging said cam faces in said roller, whereby upon rotation of the roller the blade is reciprocated.
13. In a razor of the kind described and in combination, a flat head plate having a" handle extending therefrom, a blade adapted to have reciprocatory sliding movement .along the head plate, means detachably secured to the head plate for maintaining the blade upon the head plate while lpermitting the same to reciprocate relatively to the head plate,l a rotatable ro-ller 0n the head plate located at one side thereof adjacent the rear edge of 'the blade, said roller directly engaging said blade to reciprocate it.
14. In a razor o'f the kind described and .in combination, a flat head plate having a handle extending therefrom, a blade adapted to have reciprocatory sliding movement along the head plate, means detachably secured toy the head plate for maintaining the blade upon the head plate while permitting the same to reciprocate relatively to the head plate, a rotatablel roller on the head plate located at one side thereof adjacent to the rear edge of the blade, and a cam on said roller directly engageable with said blade to reciprocate it.
