HAROLD EDWARD SHERVVIN HOLT, OF FARNBOROUGH, ENGLAND.
SAFETY-RAZOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 18, 1911.
n t on'lcd Nov. l 8, I 913. Serial No. 661,022.
To all whom itmay concern:
Be it known that I, HAROLD l lnwann SHERWIN Hour, a subject of the King oi? Great Britain and Ireland, residing a 7 The Grange, Farnborough, Hampshire, Eng land, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Razors, of which i he following is a specification.
This invention for improvements in razors relates to folding razors in which a thin blade is supported by end tension on a holder provided with a guard, and has for its object to provide means for applying the end tension to the blade, also for securing a guard and strapping shield to the blade holder.
Now according to this invention the sup porting back or holder is provided with two pins or lugs for holding the blade, and the blade is provided at its ends with two holes for engaging the lugs. One of these lugs is fixed rigidly, while the other is mounted eccentrically on a short lever by means o't which the tension is applied to the blade. The guard is either made in one piece with the holder or is detachable as hereinafter described.
In mounting the blade on its back the lever is so placed that the lugs approach one another, in which, position the blade [its over the lugs after which the moving of the lever draws the lugs apart, and puts the blade in tension.
The back forming the support for the blade is either made in the known manner with a row of prongs or fingers on either side forming the guard, or the guard. is made removable, and is secured to the back by the same pins or lugs on the blade.
For the purpose of stropping the razor the back or blade holder supports a shield which covers the one edge of the blade while the other edge is being stropped.
The accompanying sheets of illustrative drawings show two forms of the invention by way of example.
Figure l is an elevation of an open razor constructed according to the present invention. Fig. 2 is a reversed elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an elevation looking on the edge of the blade. Fig. t is a transverse section of the blade and back, Fig. 5 is a plan of Fig. 2. Figs. 6 and 7 are elevation and cross section respectively, of a modified form of blade holder for use with a removable guard plate. Figs. 8 and 9 are face and Figs. l0 and ll are front and end views rcspectivoly ol' the stropping shield.
Referring to l igs. l to 5 the blade (i is mounted between two pins 7) a on the back o. The pin Z is fixed while the pin is mounted ecccntrically on the back, and is provided with a short lever (2. The blade is provided with two holes at its ends by which it is held on the pins 7) 0. these latter having slightlv enlarged heads. I i
The back (Z is made in the term o't a guard with a series of fingers on either side. 7
ln mounting the blade on the back the lever is so turned as to cause the eccentric pin to approach the fixed pin, when the blade is put in place and the lever turned again to apply the necessary tension to the blade.
Tn the modified form of construction shown in Figs. (5 to i the back (Z instead oi being provided with integral guard teeth is arranged to hold a detaclmblc guard plate f which is conveniently stamped out of sheet metal. Th guard plate is slit or cut at one end to enable a narrow strip f/ to be bent up out: of the plane of the guard plate to Form a spring, and is also provided with slots 7L adapted to be passed over the pins or lugs i) on the holder (7.
l Vhcn placing the guard on the holder the pins Z) are passed through the wide ends of the slots 71., after which the guard is slid longitudinally to cause the pins to engage the narrow parts of the slots. After the guard has been placed in position the blade s placed over it, and secured as before described.
Tho stropping shield 5 shown in Figs. 10 and 1] consists oi a. plate curved along one edge I as shown, the curved edge covering one edge of the blade when it is being stroppcd, and also insuring the blade lying on the strop at the required angle. Slots it similar to the slots in the guard are formed in the shield, and a spring portion 9 is also bent up on the shield, the shield being held on the support (Z in the same manner as the guard f.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A razor of the character described coinprising a blade with holes in opposite ends, a blade holder or support, a pin fixed in one end of the support, and adapted to engage one end of the blade, :1. second pin edge views ot the removable guard, and
mounted to rotate axially in the support and provided with an eccentric portion adapted to engage the other end of the blade, and means for axially rotating the pin to apply end tension to the blade said pins engaging the sides of the holes in the blade nearest the respective blade ends when the blade is secured to the holder.
2. A razor of the character described comprising blade with holes in opposite ends, a blade holder or support, a pin fixed in one end of the support, and adapted to engage one end of the blade, a second pin mounted to axially rotate in the support and prorided with an eccentric portion adapted to engage the other end of the blade, and a short lever fixed to the pin and capable 01" axially rotating the pin to secure or release the blade said pins engaging the sides of the holes in the blade nearest the respective blade ends when the blade is secured to the holder.
3. A razor of the character described comprising a blade with holes in opposite ends, a blade holder or support, a pin fixed in one end of the support, and adapted to engage one end of the blade, a second pin mounted to rotate in the support and provided with an eccentric portion adapted to engage the other end of the blade, means for rotating the pin to apply end tension to the blade, and a removable guard interposed between the blade and blade holder, and provided with openings taking over the blade tensioning pins said pins engaging the sides of the holes in the blade nearest the respective blade ends when the blade is secured to the holder.
In testimony whereof I have atlixed my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
