SAFETY-RAZOR.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 14, 1914.
- Application filed April 28, 1913. Serial No. 764,054;
T0 all whom t may concern.'
'Be it known that I, ELLswoRTH L. Mc-
CAIN, a citizen of the United States of.,
America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Razors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. p
This invention relates to safety razors,
'and .the object of my invention is to provide a razor embodying a guard plate, a clamping plate, blades, and means between the plates for holding the blades at a proper inclination and against accidental displacement.
The invention consists in mattershereinafter set forth and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a cross sectional view of a portion of'a razor; Fig. 2 is a plan of fa pair of single edge blades; Fig.
3 is a perspective view of the clamping plate, and Fig. 4 is a similar view of a guard plate.
In the drawing, the reference numeral 8 denotes a portion of a stemor handle having the outer end thereof provided with a shoulder or flange 9, which affords a seat for a guard plate 11. The guard platell has beveled, serrated or toothed longitudinal margins 14 and guide pins or lugs 15 that are tapered and have their greatest diameter .at said plate. The guide pins are adapted to enter corresponding recesses 16 in a clamping plate 13. This plate is slightly crowned or cambered so as to bear along its longitudinal margins on the guard plate or on blades 21 placedl lbetween said plates. The blades 21 are made of thin metal and are proportioned to rest on the guard plate with the cutting edges 18 thereof in operatable relation to the serrated mar 'ns 14 ofl the guard plate, said blades havmg guide openings 19 for the guide pins 15 and cut away inner edges 20 providing clearance for the extreme end of the stem 8. The extreme end -in presence of two witnesses.
of the stem 8 is screw threaded and is adapted to enter a socket l2 in the clamping plate 13, whereby the two plates will be retained upon the end of the stem.
The blades 21 are maintained at an incli* nation with respect to the flat guard plate 11 by the sides of the tapering guide pins 15; the openings 19 of the blades being of less diameter than the base of each pm. In con- `sequence of this construction, the blades can be tilted at -a proper inclination to be held in operative positionby the clamping plate relative to the beveled toothed edges of the flat guard plate. It is therefore apparent that the'pins 15 perform a function that is necessary in order that the blades can be correctly positioned.
What I claim .isz
A safety razor comprising a flat guard plate, afsupporting stem, tapering guide pins carried by said plate adjacent to the longitudinal edges thereof, said guard plate having the longitudinal edges beveled and toothed, blades having the inner edges thereof out away to provide clearance for said stem -and provided with apertures to receive said tapering pins, but of smaller diameter than that of the base of the pins, whereby said blades can be supported by the sides of said pins at an inclination relative to said guard plate and with the beveled edges thereof in a plane with the beveled edges of said guard plate, and a clamping 'plate in screw threaded engagementwith the stem and recessed to receive the taperlng guide pins and adapted to bear along the longitudinal margins of said blades and maintain the beveled edges thereof in a plane with thecbeveled edges of said guard plate and said clamping plate.
In testimony whereof I affixy my signature ELLswoRTH L. MCoAIN.
