To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLIFFORD UTTER, a
citizen of the United States, residing at. Lebanon, 1n the county of Boone and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Razors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein'to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a safety razor blade holder in which the blade may be.
readily secured in a manner to permit the convenient honing or stropping of the same.
Safety razors of the usual type include a cutting blade, which, for honing and stropping purposes, must be removed from' its holder. As this blade is ordinarily of a thin flexible character, it is obvious that an auxiliary holder must be provided for the reception of the blade when desiring to strop or Y hone the same.
The main object of the present invention is, therefore, the provision of an auxiliary holder in which the cuttin razor may be quickly and conveniently se-' cured in a manner to present the cutting edge of said blade for honing or stropping'purposes.
Another object of this invention is the provision of an auxiliary holder particularly adapted for the reception of the usual doubleedge razor blades, wherein the edge not presented for honing or stropping is free of contact with any part of the holder and thereby protected against injury.
With the above object in view the invention consists in separable clamping plates specifically formed for coo eration' with the particular form of blade to e operated upon, a handle member secured to or formed integral with one of the plates, and a binding clip'to secure the lates in clamping engagement with the blade.
The preferred embodiment of details of the resent invention will be described in the folowing specification and particularly pointed out in the claims.

The fixed clamping plate 1 is of comparatively thin material, though having sufiicient rigidity for the purpose designed, and is of somewhat greater len th and width than the razor blade to be heFd thereby. The fixed clamping plate 1 is formed integral with, or otherwise permanently secured to the handle 3, preferably proiecting with its outer surface in alinement with one side of the handle, as shown in Figs. 1, 3, and 10., As the handle 3 is of materially greater thickness than the thickness of the fixed clamping plate 1, the described connection of the parts insured a projection of the handle beyond the relaplate 1 to provide a shoulder 5.-

The fixed clamping plate 1 is shown as adapted for the reception of a'razor blade of a particular type, being for this purpose formed in that portion included in the surface 7, is provided with a series of, preferably three, openings 8, and in the end edges, situated in alinement with the openings 8, with \I-shaped notches 9.
The movable clamping plate 2 is identical in size and structural formation with the fixed clamping plate 1, having the relatively outer surface inclined similar to -the outer surface of the fixed clamping plate 1 and the relatively inner surface embracing two distinct planes 10 and 11 similar to the surfaces 6 and 7 of the fixed clamping plate 1. The movable clamping plate 2 is further rovided with aseries of rejecting studs 12 esigned,

In Fig. 7 is illustrated another form of movable clam in plate 15, designed to cooperate with t 'e fixed clam ing late 1, and in all respects identical with t e movable clamping plate '2, except that the studs 12 are omitted and the clamping surface of said. movable clamping plate 1'5 isformed with V shaped projections 16 to engage the V-sha-ped recesses 9 formed in the edges of the fixed clamping plate 1. This form of movable clamping plate is particularly adapted for use in connection with another distinctive type of razor blade 17, shown in 8, which blade is formed with edge seems razor blade is also held in the auxiliary holder and prevented from moving either longitudinally or laterally when situated in position between the clamping plates.
In Fig. 9 is illustrated another form of movable clamping plate, as 19, also identical with the plate 2, except that the studs 12 are omitted and the side edges of the plate are formed with laterally projecting flanges 20, designed to embrace and bear against the end edges of the fixed clamping plate 1. The flanges 20 gradually decrease in width fromone end to the. other to insure cooperation between said flanges and the fixed clamping late 1 in theclamping positions of these p ates and at the same time avoid rojection beyond the outer surface of the ed clamping plate 1. The movable clamping plate 19 is desi ned for use with any form of razor blade, eing articularly adapted, however, for those bla es of plane surfaces and without particular means for cooperation with holding elements in the razor structure, as the plain razor blade 17 shown in Fig. 12 as well as those blades shown in Figs. 6 and 8.
In .Fi s.. 10 and 11 are illustrated cooperating c ampi'ng plates, a fixed clamping plate 21 and a movable clamping plate 22, similair in all respects to the clamping plates 1 and 2, except that through the connecting means )rovided on these plates they are adapted for clamping any form of razor blade. The connecting means comprise edge roje'cting flanges 23 formed on the relative y lower half of the fixed clamping plate 21, and interlocking and co-acting edge flanges 24 formed on the relatively upper half of the removable clamping plate 22. With the plates 21 and 22 assembled in clamping relation, the respective flanges 23 and 24 interlock and co-act to maintain said clamping plates against independent longitudinal and lateral movement.
A binding clip 4, of a resilient material, as steel plate, 18 used to retain all the above de scribed formsof cooperating. clamping plates in clamping positions, said clip comprising a spring strip bent to embrace the handle member and to provide spring leaves 25 to bear against the relatively outer surfaces of the clamping plates and exert sufficient ressure thereon to hold the razor blade in xed relation therebetween.
Assuming the auxiliary holder constructed as shown in Figs. 1 to 6 inclusive, and the blade to be operated upon, such as shown in Fi 6, said blade is engaged with the movab e clamping late 2 by passing the open-' connected clamping plates by a relatively endwise' movement of the parts until the free edges of the leaves 25 bear against the outer surfaces of the said clamping plates.
The razor blade is thus clamped in position with one of the cutting edges thereof projecting beyond the free edges of the clamping plates, in which position said edge may be honed or stropped in the usual manner.
In securing the blade shown in Fig. 8 in the auxiliary holder, the movable clamping plate 15 is of the form shown in Fig. 7, in the use of which the projections 16 engage the notches 18 in the razor blade and also the notches 9 in the fixed clamping plate 1.. The binding clip 4 thereupon applied as previously described, to complete the clamping of the razor blade. In the use of the auxiliary holder with blades of other types the clamping plate 19 may be used with the fixed clamping plate 1,
but I prefer to use clamping plates such as the clamping plates illustrated in Figs. 10 and 11, which plates 21 and 22 are especially adapted to cooperate to clamp any form of blade of this character of razor between their clamping surfaces, the clip 4 being applied to said plates to complete the clamping operation.
The relative inclinations of the upper and lower portions of the inner proximate surfaces of the respective clamping plates is a very material feature of the present inven tion. Owing to these inclinations, the lower portion of the inner of each clamping plate will snugly engage the interposed razor blade, while the upper portions of these surfaces diverge from their connection with the engaging surfaces to the handle member, so that when the clamping plates are in clamping position the upper portions of the inner surfaces are spaced apart, as shown in Fig. 2. As practically all blades for safety razors are of the double type, that is, with opposing cutting edges, the construction described will clamp the blades to ermit o eration upon one cutting edge w ile at tie same time supporting the other cutting edge in the space provided between the upper por tions of the inner surfaces of the plates.
. The cutting edge is so. supported as to be absolutely free from contafct with any portion of the holder, and is thereby prevented from injury during the honing or stropping of the other cutting edge.
It is to be particularly noted in connection with the auxiliary holder described, that the fastening means is such that the blade may be secured in the auxiliary holder or removed therefrom in a simple and convenient manner. Furthermore, the particular arrangement of the clamping plates ermits the use of a handle member of su cient strength and rigidity to insure a proper honing and stropping of the razor blades, as any 1nher- I said surfaces bein ent flexibility in the handle member would materially interfere with a proper treatment of the razor blade.
While preferring the details of the struc ture shown and described, it is evident that various changes and modifications may be resorted to without affecting the function of the device, and it is, therefore, to be understood that 1 do not limit myself to the precise arrangement described, considering as within the spirit of the present invention such changes and variations as may fall within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim l 1. A razor blade auxiliary holder comprising cooperating clamping plates, the proximate surfaces of the plates being relatively divergent for a portion of their widths, the remaining portions of said surfaces being projected in parallel planes to provide clamping faces.

A razor blade auxiliary holder comprising a handle, member, a fixed clamping plate carried thereby, a movable clam ing plate arranged to cooperate with the ed clamping plate the roximate surfaces of the plates being relative y divergent for a portion of their Widths, the remainin ortions of projecte in parallel lanes to provide 0 am ing surfaces, means or retaining the razor hlade in proper position between the clamping plates, and means for engaging both the clamping plates to secure them in clamping position.

A razor blade auxiliary holder compris ing a handle member, a fixed clamping plate carried thereby, a movable clamping plate arran ed to cooperate with the fixed clamping p ate, the proximate surfaces of t e plates being relatively divergent for a portion of their widths, the remaining portions of said surfaces being projected 1n parallel planes to provide clamping surfaces, a binding clip embracing the handle member and engaging both the plates.

A razor blade auxiliary holder comprising a handle member, a fixed handle plate carried thereby, a movable clamping-plate arranged to cooperate with the fixed clamping plate, the proximate surfaces of the plates being-relativel divergent for a portion of their widths, the remaining portions of said surfaces being projected in parallel planes to form clamping surfaces, means for retaining said clamping lates'in their relative positions, and a inding clip embracing the handle member and engaging both plates.

A razor blade auxiliary holder comprising a handle member, a fixed clamping plate carried thereby, a movable clamping plate arran ed to cooperate with the fixed clamping p ate, the proximate surfaces of the respective clamping platesbeing formed with parallel clamping portions and divergent portions to provide a space between said lates when in clamping position, and means or securing the lates 1n clam ing position.

A razor bla e auxiliary ho der comprising a handle member, a fixed clamping plate extending therefrom, a movable clam ing plate arranged to 006 erate. with the fi xed clamping plate, the re atively outersurfaces of the respective plates'being inclined toward each other from the handle member, and a binding clip embracing the handle member and bearing upon the inclined surfaces of the plates.

A razor blade auxiliary holder compris ing a handle member, a fixed clamping plate carried thereby, a movable clamping plate arranged to cooperate with the fixed clamping p ate, the proximate surfaces of the respective clamping plates being formed with parallel clamping portions and diverging portions to provide a space between said plates when in clamping position, laterally projecting flan es formed on the side edges of said remova le clamping plate and means for securing said lates in clam ing position.

A razor bla e'auxiliary ho der comprising a handle member, a fixed clamping plate carried thereby, a movable clamping plate arran ed to cooperate with the fixed clamping p ate, the proximate surfaces of the respective clampmg plates being formed with parallel clamping portions and divergin portions to provide a space between sai plates when in clamping position, laterally interlocking projecting flanges formed on the side edges of said clamping plates and means for securing said plates inclamping position. A razor blade auxiliary holder comprising a handle member, a fixed clamping plate extending therefrom, a movable clam ing late arran ed to 006 erate with t e fixe clamping p ate, the relative outer surfaces of the respective plates being inclined toward each other from the handle member, and a spring binding clip spanning the handle member and bearing upon the outer inclined surfaces of the clam ing plates.
