LOUIS D. LIVINGSTON, 01? NEW'YURK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO LIVINGSTON 80 LIEBERMA N,
. OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
DETAGHABLE CUFF.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 24,1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS D. LIVINGSTON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of the Bronx, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Detachable Cuff, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to wearing apparel and more particularly to shirts, waists and similar garments, and its object is to provide a new and improved detachable cuff arranged to permit the wearer to conveniently attach the cuff to the shirt sleeve or remove it therefrom, and to give the cuff the appearance when attached of being sewed on or forming an integral part of the sleeve.
For the purpose mentioned the cuff is provided at its inner end with a receiving part into which the sleeve band is set, and fastening means for detachably connecting the receiving part and sleeve band with each other.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the cuff as applied to the shirt sleeve, part of the outer portion of the cuff being turned backand part of the inner portion of the cuff being shown bro-ken out to disclose the pocket containing the sleeve band; Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross section of the same on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
The cuff A is arranged for detachable engagement with the sleeve band B of the sleeve C of a shirt, the latter as well as the cuff being preferably made of a soft fabric material such as is now generally employed in the making of neglige or similar shirts. The cuff A is of double-up shape, that is, is made of two or more plies of soft material united to form a wide band doubled up to provide an outer cuff part A and an inner cuff part A integrally connected at their front ends, and of which the outer cuff part A is somewhat wider than the inner cuff part A and overlies the latter and proects rearwardly beyond the rear edge of the inner part, as plainly indicated in Figs. 1 and 3. The rear portion of the inner cuff part A is provided with a pocket A open at the rear for the reception of the sleeve band B, as plainly indicated in the drawings. To the inner portion A of the pocket A are secured the shanks D of a number of buttons D, preferably spaced apart and adapted to pass through registering buttonholes B formed in the sleeve band B, the buttons also being adapted to engage buttonholes A formed in the outer portion A of the pocket A, as will be readily understood by reference to the drawings. By the arrangement described, the buttons D serve to securely fasten the inner and outer portions A, A of the pocket A to the sleeve band B, and as the buttons extend all the way around on the cuff, it is evident that the cuff is securely fastened to the sleeve band, the cuff appearing as forming an integral part of the shirt sleeve, the same as if the said cuff was sewed on the shirt sleeve.
It will be noticed that the outer part A of the cuff, on account of being wider than the inner part A overlies and covers up the pocket A as well as the buttons D, so that the pocket and buttons are not visible.
In case the cuff becomes soiled it can be readily detached from the sleeve band B and another sleeve cuff placed in position on the said band in the manner above described.
It is understood that the outer and inner portions A, A are provided with the usual buttonholes A, A for engagement by a cuff button or the like E for closing the cuff at the ends.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
As a new article of manufacture a detachable cuff for shirt sleeves, comprising doubled-up outer and inner portions, of which the inner portion is provided along its rear edge with a pocket for the reception of the sleeve band, buttons secured to the inner face of the inner part of the pocket, and buttonholes in the outer part of the pocket and in register with and adapted to be e ,by the said buttons, the said buttons mg adapted also to engage buttonholes in the sleeve band', the said outer portion of the 5 cuif being of a greater width than the said inner portion to overlie and cover the said pocket.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of twosubscribing witnesses. v Y
'LOUIS D. LIVINGSTON.
