MAY WHITE JAMES, OF EVERETT, WASHINGTON.
MATERNITY-CORSET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 24, 1913.
Application fi1ed September 17, 1910. Serial No. 582,469.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MAY lVHrrE JAMES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Everett, in the county of Snohomish and State of lVashington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Maternity- Corsets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to corsets and more particularly to maternity corsets.
The object of the invention is the provision of a corset by which the abdomen may be supported from the shoulders and buttock and which may be adjusted so as to accommodate the gradual increase in size according to the growth of the fetus.
A further object of the invent-ion is the provision of a corset of this character having a separable abdominal support which is adjustably connected with the side sections and with the bust sections whereby the weight of the abdomen is conveniently distributed and a further object of the invention is the provision of means for adjusting the bust sections so that the breasts are properly supported and are free from pressure.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following specific description is read in connection. with the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application and in which:
Figure 1 is an elevation of the device shown applied. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the corset. Fig. 3 is a plan View of the abdominal support removed from the corset.
Referring more particularly to the drawing 1 and 2 represents the respective side sections of the corset which are provided as is usual with lacing apertures 3 so that the sections may be laced together at the back. The upper portion of the sections 1 and 2 are extended around into flexible bust sections 4 which are connected together at the front by hook and eye fasteners 5 and are provided with drawing strings 6 arranged in hems at the bottom so that the sections may be adjusted to prevent pressure at the waist line or upon the breasts should the fetus be carried very high. The sections 1 and 2 are cut away below the bust sections and have projecting from their edges the buckle straps 7 which are adapted to coact with the buckles 8 upon the abdominal support 9 which is made to conform to the curvature of the abdomen and carries upon its lower edge the garter tabs 10. Similar buckles 11 are provided to engage straps 12 depending from the bust sections 4 so that the weight of the abdomen is equally distributed between the straps 7 and the straps 12.
Secured to the rear of the sections 1 and 2 are the shoulder straps 13 which are adapted to pass over the shoulders and engage the buckles 14 carried by the upper edge of the bust sections 1 so that the weight of the abdomen is communicated to the shoulder straps directly through the straps 12 and the bust sections 4.
Vith a corset of this character it will be noticed that the abdominal support may be adjusted entirely independent of the lacing strings so as to proportionately increase the size of the corset at the abdomen as the fetus grows. This adjustment is also independent of the bust adjustment and the lacing strings for the waist line are also independently adjustable. The sections 1 and 2 are comparatively heavily boned while the sections 1 and the abdominal member 9 are very lightly boned.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is A maternity corset comprising a pair of laced sections, each of said sections being cut away at their lower end for the major portion of their width to provide relatively flexible breast supports, a draw-string for constricting the lower edges of said supports, an abdominal support comprising a single section vertically and horizontally adjustably connected with the edges of the cut away portion of one of the said sections, straps secured to the edges of the cut away portion of the other of said sections and adapted to vertically and horizontally adjustably connect the free end of the said abdominal support, and garter tabs centrally depending from said support.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MAY VHITE J AMES.
