Description

mm1; AUG 16 1870 ing,` is a full, clear,
OSCAR F. STED-BAN, OF
PATENT Orrton ESTFlELlL NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHBOlLERS.
peeilication forming part of Letters Patent No. 106,516, dated August 1,6, 1871).
To als. 107mm it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR F. STEDMAN, oi VestIield, in the county of Chautauquaand in the State of New York, have invented a new and usei'ul improvement in `Wash-Boilers; and do hereby declare thatJ the followand exact description therehad to the accompanying' etters ot' reference marked thereon forming palt ot' this specitication.
The nature oi" my invention consists in the construction ot' an apparatus or attachment to be placed Within a common Wash-boiler, and used in connection therewith, composed of the tblloWiug-described combination of parts, viz: A movable pertorated bottom or plate, snrrounded by and supported upon a rim or band, which band is made to tit close around the sides, and rests upon the bottom oi' the boiler. Passingthrough and rising,r i'rom each end of the perforated plato a tapering tube or pipe, ivider at the bottom and bent inward at'the top i'or the purpose oi'eonveying` the hot suds iorced by the action nl' the steam l'roni below to the spare above the porter-ated plate, pouring;- it. upon he clothes, which are placed upon the top oi' theI perforated bottoni or plate. 'llo prevent the suds and steam from rising through the perl'orations in the plate andl'orce them directly to the openings ot' the taperingl pipes tivo seetionai longitudinal plates are placed below the perforated bottoni, one edge ot' each' beine secured to the perforated plate near the center, and the other edge to the upright rim band that supports the perforated plate, and made ni a uidh snllicient to cover and protect the peri'orations i'roin the act-ion ot' the g strain. 'lhesc sectional plates are notte as long as the perforated bottom, thus ring an opening` at either end for the paslf the suds back into the bottom otl the he sectional plates are arranged in 5:, nianner as to allow quite a space bctxveen their. and the perforated bottoni, thus 1oz-'nung "une to conduct the suds that of, reference being dra-wing and to the l l has passed downward through the perforated ,l bottoni back into the bottoni oi' the boiler at l a pointnear the openings olA the nprightpipes, the effect ot' which arrangement is that the steam'generated at the bottom oi' the boiler acts directly upon it to i'oree it again up the tubes, thus causing the circulation to ,fro on with marvelous rapidity, cle insing the fabrics thoroughlyr -without any rubbing. The plates may be attached i or made removable.
In the annexed drawing, Figure l is a longitudinal section, and Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section ot my improvenieiit.
A` relnescnts an ordinary wash-boiler, and B the cover thereto. D is a movable porti .rated bottom, attached to and supported by the band H. E E are longitudinal sectional plates, attached to the perforated plate at e, and to the band at t.
t the perforated plate l) is a tube, F, wider at the bottom, so arranged that the steam and suds generated at the bottom ot' the boiler and .passing along below the sectional plates may pass directly into them. rJihe Atubes rising above the perforated bottom are bent inward at the top, so that the steam and through them are poured directly upon the clothes placed upon the perforated bottom.
Having thus tally described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combina-tion of the sectional plates E E with the perforated bottom 1) and upright band H, the whole opera-ting in connection with the tubes F F, substantially in the Inanner and for the purposes described.
I testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto s June, 1870.
