PATENT OFFICE.
TROY, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN` WASHING-BOILERS.
Specication forming part of Letters yPatent No. 130,828, dated August 27, 1872.
I hereinafter more fully described.
Figure l is a general perspective of the machine or boiler complete. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical lengthwise section of the same. Fig. 4 is, in perspective, the condenser turned so as to expose its interior. Fig. 5 is, in perspective, the cover of the machine. Fig. 6 is in perspective, the interior partitions of the machine, between which the clothes are placed.
a represents the outside walls of the boiler or washing-machine,a1 al being the ends, and a2 being its bottom-all constructed of metal, soy as contain water and bear placing on a stove, range, Ste. Inside of these walls c, lengthwise, I form chambers b b by partitioning off a portion of the space by plates c c, formed as shown in Figs. 3 and 6. Perforations are made at d d, as shown inFigs. 3, 4, and 6, and at e is a perforated plate, wiregauze bottom, or its equivalent, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The clothing to be washed or cleansed is placed in the space f, resting upon the bottom e. Waterbeing placed within, the apparatus is placed upon the stove or range. A cover, g, is placed over the clothes, as shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5, said cover being formed, as shown,to throw olf all water from its top. This cover closes up entirely the space or washing-chamber f. Next is placed thereon the condenser 71., constructed and shaped as shown in Figs. l, 2, 3,
and 4, so that a condensing-chamber, t', is formed above the cover g. At k k are vertical tubes or ventilators extending upward above condenser-top. Said chimneys have conical tops perforated, as shown inFigs. 1, 2, 3, and
4, for inlet of air, their bottoms 'being partially covered by the plates fml m.
When the water in the apparatus boils, the steam, rising within the chambers b b, is precipitated downward at a proper angle, through apertures Z d, upon the clothing in the interior f. Passing through the same and clothing, the
apertures enter through bottom plate e to the water, which is wholly below said platee, where it boils, as before. All steam that rises above the cover gis arrested` by the condenser and condensed therein, returning downward to be used again. Air is admitted through the ventilators 7c 7c to assist inthe process of condensation. To prevent upward escape 0f steam through the ventilators the plates m fm are placed as shown, but may be placed at 'any point below the inlet-apertures and within the ventilator-chimneys.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure 1 by Letters Patent, is-
1. The arrangement of the two chambers b b lengthwise of the machine, in combination with the cover g, when arranged, combined, and operating substantially as and for the purpose described and set forth.
2. The combination of boiler a, inside partitions c c lengthwise arranged, cover g, and condenser h, when constructed and arranged substantially in manner and for the purpose described and set forth.
