ROBERT J. NICHOLSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
BOOKBINDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 3, 1913.
Application filed February 16, 1912. Serial No. 678,039.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ROBERT J. NICHOLSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Bookbinders, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in book-binders or holders, and has for its ob ject the provision of novel and effective mechanism whereby fillers or books may be readily placed within or removed from their covers or back elements. A construction devised for the purpose is also disclosed in my application Serial No. 367,938, filed April 13, 1907.
The nature and advantages of the construction of my present invention will be fully? understood from the following description of the preferred embodiment of the invention, shown in the accompanying drawing. in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a part of the book structure; Fig. 2 is a plan view of a part of the structure shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a view of the structure shown in Fig. 2 with one of the parts in another adjustment; Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 4 4 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line 5 5 of Fig. 8.
Like parts are indicated by similar characters of reference throughout the different figures.
The back element 64 preferably constitutes a separable cover designed to engage the backs of books or fillers, such as pamphlets, magazines, etc.. a book Z) being shown pro vided with such a covering. In order that this back element a may engage the back of the book, it is preferably provided with upwardly extending arms 0 that are secured to the back element in any suitable way. In the preferred embodiment of the invention, these upwardly extending arms constitute the angular ends of a metal strip (Z, which is caused to form a part of the back element a. The arms 0 0 are provided with openings therein for the reception of a bar 6, preferably of metal and desirably oblong in cross-section to enable it to be held from rotating, turning, or shifting, by the two portions of the book or filler between which the bar is disposed, for apurpose which will appear. That end of the bar which engages the arm 0 desirably passes through an open- 111g therein and is so related thereto that it may, while maintaining its engagement with the arm 0, be swung sul'liciently clear of the cover, to enable a book to be placed within, or removed from, the cover. In the preferred embodiment of the invention, this end of the bar is desirably wedge-shaped so as to limit its outward projection, and is bent up at its extreme end to constitute a fastening device to prevent the withdrawal of this end of the bar. I do not wish to be limited, however, to the manner in which the arm 0 is associated with the bar 6 in carrying out the object of my invention. The arm 0 is designed to have separable engagement with the remaining or second end of the bar, the entire arrangement being such that the bar may be turned or rotated, partially or completely, the bar in one of its positions being adapted to have its said second end disengaged from the arm 0 and in an alternative position being held by the arm The book, itself, serves to hold the bar in its latter position.
In carrying out the object of my inven tion, the arm 0 is provided with an opening 0 having a restricted outlet 0 lying in the plane that the major portion of the bar occupies when being normally held by the book. The portion, or second end of the bar 6, that is adjacent to the arm 0 is bent or twisted to occupy a plane that is transverse o-r angular with respect to the plane occupied by the balance of the bar, whereby said second end of the bar may not be withdrawn through the restricted outlet 0 when the book is in normal relation with the cover or back element within which it is disposed, the arm 0? then surrounding the twisted end of the bar.
When it is desired to remove the cover from the book, the book is opened at the place where the bar is located and then laid flat, whereafter the bar is given a quarter turn to bring its second or twisted end into the same plane with the restricted outlet 0 to permit of the elevation of the bar, so that the book may be inserted within or withdrawn from the back element or cover.
I believe it to be broadly new with me to provide a construction wherein the book is adapted to hold the bar so that the bar is held in engagement with the back element in order to hold the book in place, and while I prefer to employ a construction by which the book holds the bar from material turning movement for the purpose stated, I do not wish to be limited to such construction in all embodiments of my invention.
While I have herein shown and particularly described the preferred embodiment of my invention, I do not wish to be limited to the precise construction shown, as changes may readily be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent the following:-
