B. B. OSHER CLIP DEVICE July 2, 1957 Filed Aug. 13, 1954 INVENTOR. Benjamin 5. Usher v BY j ZQW CLIP DEVICE Benjamin B. Osher, Lawrence, N. Y., assignor to American Kleer-Vu Plastics, Inc., Maspeth, Y.
Application August 13, 1954, Serial No. 449,550
' 1 Claim. c1. 24-153 This invention relates to a clip device, and more par ticularly to a clip device for holding wings in a wallet, pass case, and the like.
The object of the invention is to provide a clip device which will permit wings to be readily removed from or added to a pass case as desired, the clip device being readily locked or unlocked.
Another object of the invention is to provide a clip device for holding acetate wings in leather pass cases, the clip device being made of any suitable material such as metal whereby upon application of a slight manual pressure on a side of the clip the locking pin slips out whereby the wings can be readily removed or added and wherein when the locking pin is in place, a sturdy and reliable support is provided for the wings in the leather pass case.
A further object of the invention is to provide a clip device which is extremely simple and inexpensive to manufactnre.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application, and in which like numerals are used to designate like parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the clip device of the present invention being used for holding wings in a leather pass case.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the clip device showing the device in open position.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary perspective view showing a modification of the clip device.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of another modified clip device showing the device in open position.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral designates a pass case which includes a foldable cover member 11 that may be made of any suitable material such as leather. A tongue 12 may extend from an end of the cover 11, and the tongue 12 may be provided with a bushing 14 for engaging a suitable member whereby the pass case can be maintained in folded or closed position when desired. Detachably and pivotally mounted within the cover 11 is a plurality of foldable wings 15 which may be made of a suitable transparent material such as a suitable acetate plastic material. The wings 15 are adapted to hold pass cards or other pages or sheets there in, and suitable recesses 13 are provided in each of the wings 15 for facilitating the removal and insertion of the pass cards 9 into the wings 15, Figure 1. The intermediate portion of the wings 15 is pivotally connected to the cover 11, and the end portions of the wings 15 are shaped to provide pockets for receiving the cards 9 therein.
A clip device is provided for detachably and pivotally securing the wings 15 to the cover 11 and this clip device is indicated generally by the numeral 16. The clip device 16 may be made of any suitable material such as metal and includes an elongated bar 17 which may have a curved shape in transverse cross section. The bar 17 of the clip device 16 is arranged exteriorly or on the opposite side of the cover 11 from the wings 15.
I Extending from the ends of the bar 17 and formed integral therewith or secured thereto is a pair of ears l8 and19, Figure 3. The ear 18 is provided with a circular opening 20 for receiving a cylindrical trunnion 22 that extends from an end of a locking pin 21. The locking pin 21 is arranged inwardly of the wings 15.
The other ear 19 is provided with an inclined slit 23 that terminates in an enlarged cut-out 24. Extending from an end of the pin 21 is a trunnion which includes a pair of cylindrical sections or portions 25 and 26 of diflerent diameters. These sections are adapted to he engaged by the slit 23 and received in the cut-out 24. When it is desired to disengage the pin 21 from its locked position, it is only necessary to apply a slight manual pressure to the ear 19 whereby the inherent resiliency of the metal parts will permit the sections 25 and 26 to become disengaged from the ear 19.
The intermediate portion of the cover 11 is provided with a pair of slots 27, Figure 2. Each of the wings 15 may have a central thinned portion made of any suitable material such as leather or plastic, and this intermediate portion of each of the wings 15 is provided with a pair of slots 28. The slots 28 in the wings 15 are arranged in registry with the slots 27 in the cover 11. These registering slots serve to receive the ears 18 and 19.
Referring to Figure 4 of the drawings, there is shown a slightly modified form of the invention wherein the clip device is indicated generally by the numeral 29. The clip device 29 includes a bar 30 and extending from one end of the bar 30 is an ear 31 having an elongated or inclined slit 32. The slit 32 is adapted to receive a cylindrical trunnion 34- which extends from an end of a locking pin 33. A suitable trunnion may be provided on the other end of the pin 33 for engaging the opposite ear on the bar 30 and the arrangement in Figure 4 permits the pin to be readily moved into and out of locked position.
From the foregoing, it is apparent that a clip device has been provided for maintaining any desired number of wings in a pass case. In use, the pin 21 may be entirely disconnected from the ears 18 and 19 and then the desired number of Wings 15 can be arranged in the cover 11. Each of the wings have slots 28 which register with the slots 27 and after the desired number of wings 15 have been inserted, the ears 19 and 18 extend through the registering lSlOlS. Then, the trunnion 22 of the pin 21 is arranged in engagement with the opening 20 in the ear 18. Then, the trunnion on the other end of the pin 21 is extended through the slit 23 and into engagement with the cut-out 24. The cut-out 24 is of the proper size to snugly receive and hold the enlarged portion 26 so that accidental disengagement of the pin 21 will be prevented. The wings 15 can be used for holding cards or passes 9 or any other material therein.
To open the clip it is only necessary to apply a slight manual pressure outwardly on the car 19 and this permits the thin portion 25 of the pin to slip out through the channel or slit 23. Then, when the pin is put back in place, and when the wider diameter portion 26 reaches the enlarged cut-out 24, there is efiYected a positive closure. The clip device is primarily intended for use with pass cases.
Referring to Figure 5 of the drawings there is shown another modified clip device which is indicated generally by the numeral 35. The clip device 35 includes an elongated bar 36 that has a pair of cars 37 extending from its ends. The ears 37 are arranged in spaced parallel relation with respect to each other, and each has an opening 33 therein. A locking pin 39 extends between the pair of ears 37, and a trunnion 40 of reduced diameter extends .P atented July 2, 1957.
from each end of the locking pin 39. The trunnions 40 are adapted to project through the openings 38. To open the clip device 35, it is only necessary to manually move the ears 37 apart slightly whereby the pin 39 can be moved to, the position shown in' Figure'S or. else ,it, can be completely removed fromithe ears.
I claim:
In a clip, device, a bar, an ear arranged at right angles with respect-to each end of said bar and extending therefrom, said ears being arranged in spacedparall'el relation With respect to each other, the outer ends of said ears being'shaped arcuately, the outer ends ofisai'd earsha ving the sameradius'of curvature, said ears being of the same length, 'said ears being of the same width and thickness,
one of said ears being provided with a circular opening,
said opening being spaced inwardlyfromtheouter edges of said ear, the other of said. ears being provided with an inclined slit extending Ifromone edge, ofthe ear, said s'lit being arranged angularly with respectztothe longitudinal axis ofsaid ear, said slit terminatingin an: enlarged circular cutout, said. cutout being: arranged in. opposed registering relation with respect to said opening, a cylindrical locking pin including. a cylindrical trunnion extending from one end thereof for seating in the opening in said one ear, and a trunnion extending from the other end of said pin and including a pair of cylindrical sections of different diameters for engaging said slit and cutout, the section nearest said pin being of greater diameter than the outermost section, the diameter of both of said sections being less than therdiameter of said pin, the largest of said sections adapted to snugly seat in said cutout.
