COMBINED LOOSE-LEAF CLIP AND NOTE-BOOK HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 24,1912.
Application filed February 10, 1912. Serial No. 676,796.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HOMER R. SHAFER, a citizen of the United States, residing at De troit, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in a Combined Loose-Leaf Clip and Note-Book Holder, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a combined looseleaf clip and note book holder and has for its object a loose-leaf clip adapted in connection with the front cover of the note book to hold the back and such leaves as is desired in angular standing position, so that they may be easily read. 7
In the drawings :-Figure 1, is a perspective of my invention, showing the book in angular standing position. Fig. 2, is a detail of the clip, showing the cover cramped in the narrowed portion of the clip. Fig. 3, is a detail of the clip in position to lock the leaves in the book. Fig. l, is a detail of the clip in position to allow the insertion or withdrawal of leaves from the book. Fig. 5, is a side elevation of the clip and a section of the back of the book, showing the fastening of the clip to the back. Fig. 6, is a detail of one end of the cover.
1, is the back of the book which, at one end, has a metallic reinforcing plate 2 embedded in it. This reinforcing plate is exposed by cutaway portions 33. The split shank 4 of the clip 5 straddles the plate and is loosely riveted thereto by the rivet 6, so that the clip 5 can swing on the rivet as a pivot to close the clip over the post 7, as shown in Fig. 3, or open the clip, as shown in Fig. 4. The reinforcing plate 2 is notched at the exposed portions to allow the straddling shank of the clip to swing around farther than would ordinarily be allowed. It will be noted that this fastening is such that when the back of the book is laid upon the desk, there is nothing exposed to contact and scratch the desk. The cover 8 of the book is also provided, at the end where it is fastened to the back, with a metallic reinforcing strip 9, which is slotted at 10, the
slots extending through the cover itself. Through these slots, the clip 5 passes and fastens the cover to the back 1. The main portion of the clip 5 is large enough so that the cover 8 may move freely and swing freely upon the clips. However, the portion of the clip 5, beginning at the point 5 and extending to the fastening with the back, is formed into a considerably more narrowed portion. The width of this portion is intended to be somewhat less than.
from the edge of the cover or the metallic strip 9, to the adjacent ends of the slot 10. This allows the cover, when folded over, as shown in Fig. 1, to cramp with the narrowed portion of the clip, as shown in Fig. .2, and the cover 8 is thereby held in a fixed position with respect to the clip 5, which being fast to the back 1, there is a temporary fixed angular relation between the cover and the back. This is of sufficient strength to hold the book in standing position, as shown in Fig. 1. When it is desired to take down the book and close it, the portion of the back 8, cramping with the narrowed portion 4 of the clip, may be readily freed by slight forcing and the cover swung over the top of the clip into its closed position.
lVhat I claim is 1. A note book, having in combination, a back, a clip fastened thereto, a cover hinged on said clip and means on said clip for holding the cover in temporarily fixed and acutely angular relation with respect to the back, whereby the leaves contained in the book may be supported in a position near to the vertical for the purpose of reading them, substantially as described.
2. A note book, having in combination, a back, a clip fastened thereto and having a narrowed portion, a cover hinged on said clip and adapted, when brought into angular position with respect to the back, to cramp in said narrowed portion and thereby hold the cover and back in temporarily fixed position, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
