Description
H. DESBARATS SPIRAL LOCK BINDING Filed May 28, 1954 Oct. 29, 1935.
Patented Oct. 29, 1935' Hullett Desbarats, Montreal, Quebec, Canada Application May 28, 1934, Serial No. 727,928
6 Claims.
This invention relates to binding and particularly to the binding of spiral bound sheets.
The bundle of sheets have a series of spaced perforations close to one edge, through which a spiral coil of wire is run. I A
'I'he object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive means of securing tgether two or more sets of spiral bound sheets.
A further object is to provide a simple and inexpensive means of attaching a cover to` spiral bound sheets.
A further object is to provide means of attachng a cover to a series of connected sets of spiral bound sheets.-
Other objects will be set forth hereinafter.
'I'he invention in its simplest form consists in interlapping the spiral binding oi' two sets of sheets and then running a rod through the space included in both coils. Y
Other applications will be described which include additional elements and varied arrangements. f
Reference will be made to the accompanying drawing in whichz-f `Figure 1 shows the attachment of two spiral coils in section.
Figure 2 shows a spiral coil inserted in a strip of leather. Y
Figure 3 is a plan view of Fig. 2.
f Figure 4 shows a spiral coil in the back 0f a cover having backing strip.
Figure 5 shows a set of spiral bound sheets attached to a cover.
Figure 6 shows a' plurality of attached spiral bound sheets secured to a cover.
Figure 7 shows a locking bar.
In Figure 1 the sheets I having perforations I0 are bound by the spiral coil Hand the sheets 2 having perforations 20 are bound by the spiral coil 2|. The coils are interlapped to form a space s through which a bar 4 is passed.
The bar 4 has a head 40 and a removable knob or nut 4I. Y
In Figure 2 the part 5 is a flexible strip of leather or the like with two rows of perforations 50-50 staggered to receive a spiral coil 5I as shown in Fig. 3. i Q
In Figure 4 the strip 5 joins the cover boards 52-52 which are also joinedby' th'e backing strip 53. In Figure 5 the spiral coil 5I in the perforations 50 is secured to the coil II which binds the sheets I by the bar 4.
In Figure 6 the strip 5 has two spiral coils spaced apart secured to it in perforations.
A series of sets of sheets 6 connected by spiral binding as shown in Figure 1 has its end coils 6I attached by bars 4 to the coils 5I-5I. Cover boards 52---52` and a backing strip 53 are also provided.
In Figure 7 the bar 4 has a iixed knob 40 and 5 a removable knob 4 I.
By means of this invention spiral bound books or magazines can` be readily and rapidly joined together without aiiecting the at opening of this type of binding.Y Y l0 By inserting a spiral coil in perforations of a iiexible strip and attaching the edges of the strip,
to cover boards, spiral bound books or magazines f can be readily secured to the covers. When a number of attached spiral bound books are to be provided with a cover, two spiral coils can be inserted in the leather back of the cover, andthe outside coils of the books are then attached to the coils in the back strip.` I
To protect the strip bearing the coil of coils-an 2o outer strip attached to'the side boards of the cover may be provided.
This cover will furnish a permanent binding in which insertions or removals maybe made when desired. v
.The invention is particularly adapted to the birding of periodicals, records, and refills.
By havinga locking removable knob to the locking rod, an insert maybe locked to a cover.
The` invention can be readilyv adapted to, a. a0 great variety of uses.
By means of the invention thick catalogues or directories can be bound in sections by spiral coils and madeavailable to be opened dat.
What I claim is:-
1. An interlocking binding, comprising two spiral coil bound bundles of sheets havingtheir coils .interlapped and a rod running between the interlapped parts of the coils. I
2. An interlocking binding, comprising' a 4.0 cover having a back and sides, a spiral coil inserted in two rows of perforations in the back, a bundleof sheets spiral bound by means of a second coil, having the two coils interlapped and a rod running between the interlapped partsl of the coils.
3. An interlocking binding, comprising a cover having a back and sides, a spiral coil inserted in rows ofperforations at each side of the back, a
plurality oi' spiral bound bundles o1' sheetsinter- 50 locked by bars in series, and each end coil inter' locked by a bar with one coil of the back.
4. In` an interlocking binding, a cover comprising, sides, a exible inner back and an outer l back, the linner back having a spiral coil in two 55 rows of perforations, adapted to interlap with the 6. In an interlocking binding, e. cover, a pertocoil oi' a spiral bound bundle of sheets. rated flexible strip secured in the cover. a spiral l 5. In an interlocking binding, two spiral coils coil inserted in the perforations, a. spiral coil v interlapped, a. rod running between the interbound bundle of sheets, the coils interlapped and 5 lapped parts having end knobs, one of which is a. rod through the interlapped parts-ot the coils. removable.
