My invention has to do with book binding, vhaving for one -of .its objects `the provision of simple,-economical and ei'cient binding means .consisting `of plates or strips vpresenting projecting'ta-bs whi'chlform loops engageable in perforations in the sheets or signatures to be bound, so that anyone may do his own binding by obtaining a number of the plates.

It is another object of the invention to provide a book binding member which is of such construction that it may beeconomically stamped from sheet stock and easily installed in the sheets or sections to be bound.

Another object of the invention is to be found in the provision of a binding member which enables the bound sheets to remain flat when the book is opened and which enables the sheets or sections to rest flatly against each other in superposed relation when the book is closed.

Another object of the invention is to provide simple and novel means for hinging several binding strips together.

The invention possesses still further objects and corresponding advantages which will become obvious from the following detailed description of one presently preferred embodiment chosen for the purpose of making my invention understood, it being understood, of course, that with in the scope of the claims appended hereto the invention is susceptible of being embodied in other and modiiedphysical forms.

For purposes of the following description I shall refer to the accompanying drawings, in which:

Fig. 1 is a top plan view;

Fig. 2 is a side view;

Fig. 3 is a view showing the bound sections mounted in a cover binder;

Fig. 4 is an enlarged section taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 2; and

Fig. 5 is a plan view of one of the binding elements asit appears when stamped from sheet stock.

My improved binding members are vlirst stamped from sheet stock into the form best shown in Fig. 5 and comprising a ila-t plate or body strip 5 presenting along one side edge a plurality of longitudinally spaced tabs 6 and along the opposite edge a plurality of longitudinally spaced, relatively short ears l, the strip also pre senting longitudinally spaced and longitudinally disposed slots 8 between the tabs. The strip 5 is slit at the points where the tabs E and ears 'l intersect the strip, as shown at 9 to facilitate 4 Claims. (Cl. 281-46) bending the tabs and ears out of the plane of the strip.-

At Ill, l5 I show a pair of sections or signatures going to make up'- abook', and while I show only two of suchsections it will be understood that the bound book may comprise any desired number of sections. For instance, each of the sections may consist of a number of individual sheets or a complete magazine or other publication a number of which it is desired to bind into a single book.

Preparatory to binding, each of the sections or signatures is provided with a plurality of spaced edge recesses 20 along the binding edge and the portions of the binding edge between the recesses are each provided with elongated slots or perforations 2l. The recesses 20 and slots 2| are so formed in the sections going to make up the book that the recesses and slots of one section are staggered with relation to those of an adjacent section or sections-that is, the recesses 20 of one section will underlie or overlie the tab portions of the adjacent section or sections which contain the slots 2l.

To bind the several sections into a volume or book by use of my binder strips, the several tabs E of a strip 5 are bent respectively into loop form and mounted in the slots 2| of a book section as best shown in Fig. 4. To add the next section, the tabs 6 of another strip 5 are likewise mounted in the slots of the section to be added, being looped through the slots as before described. Each section which it is desired to incorporate in the volume is likewise preparedthat is, one of the strips 5 is mounted thereon in the manner before described. When the several sections or signatures are thus prepared they are joined and hinged together by looping the ears 1 of one strip through the respective slots 8 of the next adjacent strip. The strips 5 and their integral tabs 6 and ears 1 are preferably formed of a somewhat pliant though sufliciently strong material so that the loops may be readily formed and will retain their looped form though normal usage. The several sections thus bound may be inserted in a cover binder 30 as shown in Fig. 3 or in any suitable manner.

As the several sections or signatures are thus assembled, each of the loop portions 6, where it emerges from the perforation 2 I rests within one of the recesses 20 of the next adjacent section or sections, so that despite its curved form it v does not interfere with the laying of one section flatly upon the other. The sheets going to make up each section may be opened flatly and the several sections may be swung into edge-to-edge juxtaposition by means of the hinges provided by the ears 1 engaging in the slots 8. It is also possible to easily detach one section from another by removing the ears 'l from the slots 8 into which they engage.

I claim:

1. A device for binding together into book form sections having' perforations along their binding edges, comprising a pair of strips each presenting along one side edge longitudinally spaced projecting tabs forming loops engageable in the respective perforations of a section, one of said strips presenting longitudinally spaced slots and the other of the strips presenting along its opposite edge longitudinally spaced ears forming loops hingedly engageablein said respective slots.

2. The device of claim 1 wherein the said slots are disposed in staggered relationship to the tabs.

3. The device of claim 1 wherein the ears are relatively shorter than the tabs.

4. In a device for binding together into book form sections having their binding edges alternately slotted and recessed, a pair of parallel juxtaposed strips each presenting along one side edge longitudinally spaced projecting talos forming loops engageable in the respective perforations of a section, one of the strips presenting adjacent its opposite side edge a plurality of longitudinally spaced slots each disposed in a plane between adjacent tabs of the strip, and the other 0f the strips presenting along its opposite edge a plurality of longitudinally spaced ears forming loops hingedly engageable in said respective slots.
