This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in spiral binders and is of the general type disclosed in Patent No. 2,169,943, granted to Sumner W. Dow on August 15, 1939, and embodies improvements in the art thereover.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a spiral binder for the loose leaves of a book wherein a spirally arranged wire carrying the loose leaves has the side thereof opposite the edges of the leaves interfitting with straps of generally v-formation that are struck up from a pair of nested elongated plates that are arcuate in cross section with means associated with the wire spiral and struck-up straps for securing the spiral wire carrying the loose leaves in position in the supporting plates.
A further object of the invention is to provide a loose leaf spiral binder of the foregoing character wherein the book backing comprises a pair of interfitting plates to which the coiled Wire carrying the loose leaves is attached by means of a retainer member with the latter also acting to retain the outside usual leather or like backing of the book in position.
With the above and other objects in view that will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully, described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and claimed.

Referring more in detail to the accompanying drawings, the reference numeral [5 designates a coiled wire having the convolution thereof well spaced apart and adapted for threading through openings or eyelets I6 in a stack of book leaves I! and this assembly of the coiled wire and book leaves is adapted for mounting in a bookconstruction comprising a book backing designated in general in Figure 1 by the reference character l8 with the book backing carrying a top cover I9 and a bottom cover 29. The book backing I8 and the covers l9 and 20 may be formed of any preferred materials, but in books of this general character they usually comprise, as shown more clearly in Figures 3 and 4, an outer covering. 2| of leather, imitation leather or the like and a lining 22 for the cover, these covering sheets extending fromthe top and bottom covers [9 and 20 respectively around the backing l8 and being designated by the reference characters 2| and 22 s The book backing i8 is reinforced by a pair, of elongated metallic plates 23 and 24 that-are arcuate in cross section as illustrated, with the plate 24 nested in the plate 23 with these two plates confined in the backing l8 and with which the coiled wire [5 carrying the leaves I! is interfittingly engaged. Inthe construction of the book that portion of the liner 22 extending through the backing is is positioned between the nested plates-23 and 24, while-the outer cover portion 2 l extending over the backing I8 directly engages the outer arcuate face of the outer backing plate 23.
As shown more clearly in Figure 8, the outer backing plate 23 adjacent opposite ends thereof has a substantially V shaped loop strap 25 struck inwardly thereof to occupy a position longitudi nally central of the channel portion of the arcuate plate 23, this struck-up loop strap resulting in the provision of a transversely extending slotted opening 26 therebeneath in the plate 23 as clearly shown in Figure 10.
The inner metallic plate 24 as shown in detail in Figure 9 is adapted to be nested in the outer metallic plate 23, and to accommodate this mounting the inner plate 24 adjacent opposite ends is provided with a transversely eXtending opening 21 permitting the passage therethrough of the struck-up loop strap 25 carried by the outer plate 23. The inner metallic plate 24 is further provided with a series of longitudinally spaced struck-up loop straps 28 that are arranged longitudinally centrally of the channel side of the arcuate plate 2i and in line with the straps 25 carried by the outer plate 23 and projecting through the inner plate openings 21.
The coiled wire carrying the leaves has the side thereof opposite the side supporting the book leaves I? placed in the nested arcuate plates 23 and 24 of the backing, with the strap loops 25 projecting between adjacent convolutions of the coiled wire [5 as clearly shown in Figures 6 and '7. As clearly shown in Figures 5 to 7, 9 and 11, the opposite ends of the inner metallic plate 25 carries right angularly extending end walls 29 and 3t, preferably of circular formation that provide stops or supports for the opposite side edges of the ends of the loose leaves I! that are hinged upon the coiled wire l5. For purposes presently to appear and as shown more clearly in Figure 5, the end wall 29 adjacent the plate 2 3 and in line with the struck-up loop straps 28 -is provided with an inwardly struck lip 3| providing an opening 32 in the end wall 29 alined with said loop straps.
With the coiled wire carrying the loose leaves I! set into the backing l8, attention being particularly directed to Figures 3 and 6, the loop straps 25 carried by the outer plate 23 move that section of the liner backing 22 registering with the openings 27 in the inner plate inwardly thereof, while that portion Zl of the cover backing portion 2 l is forced inwardly through the openings 2S afforded by the struck-up loop straps 25.
With the parts so assembled as described, a locking rod 33 has one end thereof inserted through the opening 32 in the end wall 29 of the inner backing plate 24 for passage through the longitudinally alined struck-up loop straps 28 and-25, the locking rod 23 overlying the adjacent sides of the convolutions of the coiled wire 25 and underlying the loop straps asdescribed, as well as the two portions 2i of the outer backing cover that are forced inwardly through the openings 25 in the, outer backing strip, this locking bar 33 acting to retain the cover backing E3 in position. After the locking rod 33 has been placed in the position shown in Figure 5, the struck out lip 3! is then forcibly moved to close the opening 32 in the end wall 25 oi the inner backing plate 24 to occupy the position shown at Bi in Figure 6. It will be understood that both the top and bottom covers may be longitudinally weakened at the points l9 and 2t! as shown in Figure l to facilitate hinged movements of said covers with respect to the backing l8.
From the above detailed description of the invention, it is believed the construction thereof will at once be apparent, and while there is herein shown and described the preferred embodiment thereof, it is to be understood that minor changes may be made in the details of construction, such as will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim:
1. In a book backing and spiral binder, a backing comprising a pair of metallic plates and alternate fabric layers connected together, said metallic plates being arcuate in cross-section with the inner metallic plate exposed, the spiral binder including a wire coil carrying a book of leaves, top and bottom covers carried by the backing and means for securing the spiral binder to the backing including V-shaped loop straps struck up from both of said plates and disposed between adjacent convolutions of the wire coil and a locking rod positioned between the apices of said struck-up loop straps and the underlying sides of the convolutions of said wire coil, the inner exposed metallic backing plate having openings therein through which the struck-up loop straps of the outer metallic plate extend.
2. In a book backing and spiral binder, a backing comprising a pairof metallic plates and alternate fabric layers connected together, said metallic plates being arcuate in cross-section with the inner metallic plate exposed, the spiral binder including a wire coil carrying a book of leaves, top and bottom covers carried by the backing and means for securing the spiral binder to the backing including V-shaped loop straps struck up from both of said plates and disposed between adjacent convolutions of the wire coil and a locking rod positioned between the apices of said struck-up loop straps and the underlying sides of the convolutions of said wire coil, the inner exposed metallic backing plate having openings therein, through which the struck-up loop straps of the outer metallic plate extend, a right angularly extending disk wall carried by each end of the inner metallic backing and one of said end walls having a lip struck therefrom to provide an opening for the insertion of said locking rod.
3. In a book backing and spiral binder, a backcomprising a pair of metallic plates and alternate fabric layers connected together, said metallic plates being arcuate in cross-section with the inner metallic plate exposed, the spiral binder including a Wire coil carrying a book of leaves, top and bottom covers carried by the backing and means for securing the spiral binder to the backing including v-shaped loop straps struck up from both of said plates and disposed between adjacent convolutions of the wire coil and a locking rod positioned between the api-ces of said struck-up loop straps and the underlying sides of the convolutions of said wire coil, the inner exposed metallic backing plate having openings therein through which the struck-up loop straps of the outer metallic plate extend, the struck-up loop strap of the outer metallic plate providing an opening in said plate for the passage therethrough of the adjacent portion of the outer fabric with the locking rod underlying said inwardly press-ed portion of the outer fabric.
4. In a bookbacking and spiral binder, a backcoznprising a pair of metallic plates and alternate fabric layers connected together, said metallic plates being arcuate in cross-section with the innermetallic plate exposed, the spiral binder including a wire coil carrying a book of leaves, top and bottom covers carried by'the backing and means for securing the spiral binder to the backing including V-shaped loop straps struck up from both of said plates and disposed between adjacent convolutions of the wire coil and a looking rod positioned between the apices of said struck-up loop straps and the underlying sides of the convolutions of said wire coil, the inner exposed metallic backing plate having openings therein through which the struck-up loop straps of the outer metallic plate extend, a right angularly extending disk wall carried by each end of the inner metallic backing and one ofsaid end walls having a lip struck therefrom to provide an opening for the insertion of said looking rod, the struck-up loop strap of the outer metallic plate providing an opening in said plate for the passage therethro-ugh of the adjacent portion of the outer fabric with the locking rod underlying said inwardly pressed portion of the outer fabric.
