Description
No. 664,828. Patented Jan. I, 190i.
W. S. BANNER.
SALE OR ACCOUNT BOOK.
(Application filed Mar. 24, 1900.)
(No Model.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WINFIELD S. BANNER, OF UNIONVILLE, MISSOURI.
SALE OR ACCOUNT BOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 664,828, dated January 1, 1901.
I Application filed March 24, 1900. Serial No. 10,034. (No model.)
To a whont it ntay concern:
Be it known that I, WINFIELD S. BANNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Unionville, in the county of Putnam and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Sale or Account Book, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to account-books, and has for its object to produce a book of this class by means of which the leaves may be increased or decreased at will and the accounts secured to the different leaves, whereby any account in the book may be readily found and the necessity for posting the accounts from one book to another is avoided.
With this object in view my invention consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement of parts of a book, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, in which the same reference-numerals indicate corresponding parts in each of the views in which they occur, Figure l is a perspective view of a book closed made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same open. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view of the book. Fig. 5 is a detail view of one of the leaves of my improved book; and Fig. 6 is an enlarged sectional detail view of a portion of the back, the leaves being omitted to avoid confusion.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates one of the book-covers of my improved book, and 2 indicates the other one. The rear cover 1 has a binding-flap 3 permanently secured to it at one edge, and the opposite edge of the flap is arranged to fold over the rear edge of the front cover and be movably connected therewith by meansof elastic strips or connectors 4, which when secured to the interior pass through suitable perforations 5 in the cover and are secured near the forward edges of the cover upon the inside. The inner face of the binding-flap 3 is provided with a pocket-like lining 6, which is secured thereto at its edges and is provided at suitable distances apart with transverse slits or openings 7. Each of the leaves 8 of the book and also the front cover 2 is provided with a series of loops 9, projecting from their rear edges in position to pass through the slits or openings in the lining 6. Suitable attaching devices-as, for instance, cords or wires 10are passed longitudinally through the loops to the rear of the lining after the leaves have been placed in position, thereby preventing the removal of the leaves except upon the withdrawal of the fasteners 10. The same style of fastener may be utilized for com necting the strips or connectors 4 with the lining, as all that will be necessary is to provide either end of each of the connectors with a suitable loop l5,which may be passed through the opening in the lining and secured therein by inserting a wire through the loops of all the connectors in the same manner that is done for each of the leaves. of the insertion and removal of these fasteners one end of the lining, preferably the upper end, may be temporarily closed or permanently left open.
If desired, a suitable extensible hasp or clamp i1 is secured to one of the covers in position to have its opposite end engage with the other cover and hold the book closed.
For convenient access to the accounts within the book I prefer to form the leaves of the index narrower than the account-leaves, so that the letters of the alphabet 12 may be exposed upon the outer edges of the index portion in the usual manner, and the numbering of the pages of the leaves 13 will project beyond the edges of the index in position to be seen at all times. Although the accounts may be arranged upon the difierent leaves in any suitable manner, temporarily or permanently, I prefer to provide each of the leaves with suitable retaining mechanism-as, for instance, flexible elastic bands 14upon one or both sides of the leaves, under which the accounts of the different persons may be tornporarily secured.
As above described, it is evident that a great many accounts can be conveniently kept or stored in my book in such a manner that access can be had to any particular account with quickness and despatch. For instance, when it is desired to find any particular account the index is'opened at the page on which his name has been properly indexed in any suitable manner and in which the number of the page and, if desired, the column on that page on which the account will be Forthe purpose in this manner the entries for each account.
may be made upon the account itself, and thereby the necessity of transferring the accounts to a separate book is avoided, thereby simplifying the necessary bookkeeping to the greatest extent.
tain it in the book, it can be removed from its fastening and another account put in its place, the index being suitably changed to correspond with the change in the accounts. With the increase or decrease of the number of accounts to be kept in the book the number of account-leaves can be varied to suit conditions by simply withdrawing the wires of any of the leaves that are to be removed or by inserting new leaves and introducing other wires behind the lining when the inside of the book is to be increased. As the binding of the book is made flexible and the strips by means of which it is connected with the front cover are of sufficient strength to always keep thebinding drawn taut and smooth,
, the book will always present a neat and tidy may be provided with the loops 9 andbe se cured to the lining in the same manner as the leaves, thereby producing a very convenient scrap-book.
It is evident that other changes and modifications may be made without departing from If at any time any account is closed and it is not desired to further rethe spirit of my invention, andl reserve the rig-ht to make all such changes and variations in the form and construction of my improved; book as will come within the scope of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
;1 In an account-book, the combination,
with two covers, one of which is provided with r a binding-flap permanently secured thereto atone edgeand the otherone isprovided with 7 secured to the flap and provided with tranS- verseopenings, a series of leaves between-the covers, each of said leaves and the perforated cover being providedwi-th a series of loops.
upon its rear edge in position to pass through the openings in the lining, a fastener through each series of loops to the rear of the lining, yielding strips secured to the inside of the perforated cover near its front edge, the free end of each of which is provided with a loop and is passed through oneof the .openings'in the cover into the corresponding opening in the lining, a fastener through said loops, and an extensible h-asp at the free edgesof said covers.
