vn. B. HoRToN, AND DAVID DUFFUM,
OF SAME PLAGE.
Letters Patent No. 106,298, dated August 9, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOX-OR CASE FOR HOT-BEDS.
The Schedule referred to :in the-se Letters Pt'ent and making part of the same.
.To all persons to whom these presents shall come;
Be it known that I, WLLmM WELLS, of Salem in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new andY improved Box or Gasel for Hot-Beds; and that the lfollowing description, taken in Vconnection with the accompanying drawing, is a full and complete specification of the same, wherein I have set forth the nature and principles ot my said invention, together with such parts as I claim and desire to have secured to me by Letters Patent.
The present invention relates to hot-bed cases; and The invention consists in constructing the interior of' the box or case upon either one or'niore sides, to refiect .the sun-rays within the box, and thus the more perfectly vsubject the hot-bed and plantseom tained in it to their action. I
Also, in combination with the above, the invention consists in arranging the reiiecting surface or surfaces so that they can be adjusted in position-within the box, as occasion may require. Y
In the accompanying drawing, my improved hot-bed box is illustratedv Figure l being a plan or top-view of the same:
Fignredl, a transverse vertical section in plane lot hue w xffig'. l.
Figure 3, a horizontal section in fig. 2.
Figure 4, an isometrical perspective View; v
A in the drawing represents a hot-bed case or box, consisting of parallel lsidepieces B, joined together by end pieces O, with the whole coveredby an inclining top or lid,.D. .I
This lid D is hinged to'onefside'ot'the bo'xvA, so as plane of line'y y,
` to be opened or closed, and it is constructed of a frame, E, in whlch is secured a paneof glass, F, in any suitable manner.
G, a sheet or plate of timer-ranged within thebox A, against'oneot' its end pieces C.
This sheet-tin G, at its lower edge a,- s secured by hinges b to the end piece C, but its upper edge is free to be brought up against the said end-piece, or t0 be set at an angle ot' inclination .with regardtbereto, more or less great; 4
c, a stem fastened totiu G nearits upper edge. This pin or stem c projects through the end piece C out.- side of the box, and is provided, for convenience in adjusting the reector-tiu G within the box. In figs. 2 and 3, the reflector-tin G is shown, by dottedlines, as at various angles ot' inclination.l
- By `the sheet tin G, the -rays of light, passing through the glass top andv impinging on the tin,l
are reflected therebyiwithin the box, and, according to its adjustment, the direction in which they are thrown vby reflection is changed, and thus, as isiobvious, with a proper adjustment ot the tin, they can be thrown directly upon the hot-bed and its plants, securing au increased heat and light thereto, and a more rapid development and growth ofthe plant.
By having the reecting-suriaee adjustable, it is obviq'ns the reflection of light and heat can be regulated to suit the iuclinationot' the sun-rays, and, as is ob vious, either to reeet them about the interior of the box, or to throw them out, according as'the bed and plant may require.`
In lieu of a tin reiiecting-surf'ace for the box, other `forms of reflecting-surfaces may be employed, and
more than one or all ofthe 'interior surfaces of the 4box may be constructed as reectors.
Inllieu ot' hinging the reflector at its lower edge, it
may behinged at its upper edge, but it is preferable to hinge it at its lower edge.
Having thus described my invention, Iwill state my claims as follows:
What I vclaim as my invention, and desire vto secure by Letters Patent, s-
1. A hot-bed, box, or case, constructed with a reflecting-surface or surfaces, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.4
2. In combination with the' above, said surface o1" surfaces, when arranged for adjustment, substantially as and for the purpose described.
The above'specitication ot' my invention me this 4th day oi' March, A; D. 1870.
` WILLIAM WELLS.

DANIEL FLAHERTY.
