UNITED, STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM 1. FIELD, CHARLES E. JONES, AND FREDERICK '1. FIELD, OF SANFORD, FLORIDA.
LENS-SUPPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 20, 1913.
Application filed September 13, 1912. Serial No. 720,180.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM T. FIELD, CHARLES E. J ONES, and FREDERICK T. FIELD, citizens of the United States, and residents of Sanford, in the county of Orange and State of Florida, have invented a new and Improved LensSupport, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved lens support for use on lamps and arranged to permit of conveniently and quickly adjusting the lens relative to the source of light with a view to concentrate and direct the rays of light to a desired point orv object for reading. In order to accomplish the desired result use is made of a clamping band arranged for attachment to a lamp socket, a slotted arm extending from the said band, a second slotted arm connected by a clamping bolt with the said band arm, and a socket attached to the free end of the said second arm and adapted to receive the handle of a reading lens.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the lens support as applied to a table lamp; Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the lens support and lens with the several parts in disassembled posit-ion; Fig. 4; is a perspective view of a modified form of clamping band; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the hook arms.
A clamping band A encircles the socket B or other part of a lamp of any approved construction, and the clamping band A is provided at its ends with parallel flanges A engaged by a transverse clamping bolt C also engaging one end of a slotted and curved arm D extending between the flanges A. By screwing up the nut on the bolt O the clamping band A is held in position on the socket B and at the same time the arm D is fastened in place between the flanges A. A clamping bolt E passes through a slot D in the slotted arm D and also engages a slot F in a second slotted and curved arm F terminating at its upper end in a transversely-extending flange F straddled by flanges G of a socket G adapted to receive the handle H of a reading lens H of any approved construction. A bolt I connects the flanges F and G with each other to securely hold the socket G in position on the flange F of the arm F, at the same time allowing transverse swinging of the socket Or to move the lens H transversely into any de sired position. On loosening the bolt E the arm F can be adjusted on the arm D so as to move the lens H nearer to or farther from the source of light with a view to properly focus the rays of light onto a desired object for reading, illuminating or other purposes. It will also be noticed that on loosening the bolt O the arm D may be swung up or down and with it the arm F and the reading lens H to move the lens into a desired position. On loosening the bolt O the clamping band A can be readily turned around on the socket B to move the lens H bodily around to the desired position.
From the foregoing it will be seen that by the, arrangement described the user of the lens can readily adjust the same in any desired direction with a view to concentrate and direct the rays of light to a desired point or object for reading or illuminating purposes As shown in Fig. 4, the clamping band A is provided with flanges A one of which is extended to form a slotted arm D similar to the arm D and on which the slotted arm F is held adjustable as above explained. In this case the bolt C only engages the flanges A to hold the clamping band A in position on the socket B of the lamp.
In order to support more than one reading lens use is made of slotted arms- J each having a hook J at one end to be hooked onto the clamping band A or A An arm F carrying a lens socket G is adjustably secured to each arm J to carry a lens H.
The support is very simple and durable in construction, can be cheaply manufac tured and readily applied to various kinds of lamps, electric or otherwise.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent;
1. A lens support, comprising a clamping band adapted to encircle a part of a lamp and provided with a slotted arm, a second slotted arm, a clamping bolt connecting the said arms with each other, and a socket secured to the free end of the said second arm and adapted to receive the handle of a reading lens, whereby the lens can be moved bodily toward and from the lamp and adjusted at diflerent angles thereto.
2. A lens support, comprising a clamping band adapted to encircle a part of a lamp and provided with a slotted arm, a second slotted arm having at one end a transverselyextending flange, a clamping bolt connecting the said arms with each other, a split socket for the reception of the handle of a reading lens and provided with integral flanges straddling the said arm flange, and a bolt fastening the said flanges to the arm flange to hold the lens handle in the socket and permit the socket to be swung to adjust the lens.
3. A lens support, comprising a split clamping band adapted to encircle a part of a lamp, the ends of the bands having parallel flanges, a slotted arm extending at one end between the said flanges, a bolt fastening the said arm to the said flanges, a sec- 0nd slotted arm having at one end a trans versely-extending flange, a clamping bolt connecting the said arms with each other, a split socket for thereception of the handle of a reading lens and provided with flanges engaging the said slotted arm flange, and a bolt connecting the said socket flanges and the said arm flange with each other.
4. A lens support, comprising a clamping band adapted to encircle a part of a lamp and provided with a slotted arm, a second slotted arm, a clamping bolt connecting the said arms with each other, a socket secured to the free end of the said second arm and adapted to receive the handle of a reading lens, and a slotted hook arm-provided with a hook adapted to engage the said clamping band, the said hook arm being adapted to carry another slotted arm provided with a socket.
5. A lens support for lamps, comprising a clamping band, an arm adjustably secured to the band, a second arm adjustable longitudinally and transversely of the first arm, and a lens socket adjustably secured to the second arm.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
