LIGHTING-FIXTURE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, JoHN L. PALMER and CHARLES N. WHEELER, citizens of the United States, residing at Peoria, in the county of Peoria and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lighting-Fixtures; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in the extension of an electric light bracket, the arms of electroliers and the like.

' An object of the invention is to provide a. simple and strong support to receive an electric lamp socket'or other fixture.

Another object is to provide a strong and rigid member for the open end of the tubular arm of an electrolier, wall bracket, or the like for receiving a lamp socket or other fixture part, said member forming a closure for the end of the said arm.

Another object is to provide a member at the end of a hollow arm of an electrolier, wall bracket, or other fixture, to receive a lamp or other part, said member forming a closure for said open end, the relation of the parts being such as to require no fastening devices of any kind other than the said lamp or fixture itself which acts in that capacity.

To further indicate the purpose of. our invention it is to be stated that in the prior art end caps have been employed to close the ends of the fixture arms and these usually consist of a part to slidably engage the arm, one or the other or both of these parts being slotted to receive a slidably engaging member or nipple which holds a lamp socket. But as the arrangement is such that the elements may readily separate or become loosened, an extra part is necessary to fix the sliding part to the arm by using an element such as a screw, or certain interlocking portions. In the device herein, however, the part from which the lamp socket or other part is suspended holds all of the elements securely in proper relation without extra parts, or the provision of interlocking parts, thus greatly simplifying and cheapening construction.

spective, a part of a hollow arm and a closure for its open or free end. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the arm, shown in Fig. 1, and which also shows a part of the closure for the same, in section. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the hollow arm, the closure and an electrlc lamp socket in assembled order.

A illustrates the hollow arm of an electrolier, bracket, or other fixture, through which the wires extend which have attachment to the electric lamp or lamps that may be attached to said arm, said wires, however, not being shown herein. The arm may be of any desired form in cross section, or any form of configuration and when using our invention may be cut to any length desired to suit the taste or wishes of the buyer or designer, there being a hole B in one wall of the arm or that which, for convenience, may be termed its lower Wall, the purpose of which will appear presently.

C indicates a casting as a whole, which casting consists preferably of a plate D having on its inner face an extension E adapted to enter and snugly fit the end of the arm as shown in Figs. 2- and 3, and said extension may if desired, be slightly tapered, but not so shown, so that inentering the arm it will snugly fit and centralize -itself,it--being desired that the inner face of the part D fit snugly and squarely upon the end of the arm. Preferably the part E has an upper extension F to enter still farther into the arm in order to provide for greater rigidity, though this may not be used, while at the bottom the part E has an extension or lug G of some considerable length which lies in a plane perpendicular to the plane of the part D and is adapted to lie upon the inner surface of the lower wall of the arm as shown, being provided with a threaded hole H to registerwith the hole B of the arm; the relation of the parts being clearly shown in the drawing.

J is an electric lamp socket carrying the usual nipple K or its equivalent, whose free end is inserted through the hole B of the arm and screwed into the hole H of the said extension or lug G. The latter acts as a nut and when the nipple K is screwed into it through the arm, both the lug and the socket J are firmly clamped to the lower wall. of the arm, the parts being very firmly and rigidly held in place without requiring further holding means. The part D may be of any form desired and may be provided with any ornamentation desired.

Besides its use for an electric light fixture the invention may be readily adapted to the construction of gas fixtures. It may be stated that changes may be made in our device such as would be considered equiva-- lents of what is shown and described or that would lie within the meaning of the invention.

Having described the invention We claim 1. The combination with a fixture arm having an open end, of a member to close said open end and having an extension to overlie one of the walls of said arm, and means for carrying a lamp having threaded engagement with one of the parts.

2. The combination with a fixture arm having an open end, of a member to close said end and having an extension to overlie one of the walls of the arm, and means extending through said Wall and having threaded engagement with the extension to clamp it to said arm.

3. The combination with the hollow arm of a lighting fixture, of a member lying adjacent to and closing said open end, one of the described parts having an extension to overlie the other, and a nipple for carrying a lamp socket adapted to engage one of the parts for clamping both parts together.

4:. The combination with an arm having an open end, of a member to close said open end having an extension to enter it and lie upon one of the walls of said arm, and a threaded nipple extending through said wall and secured in said extension.

5. The combination with the hollow arm of a lighting fixture, the same having an open end, of a member to close said open end and having a part to fit into the arm and including an extension to lie upon one of the walls of the latter, and means adapted to pass through said Wall in a slidable manner and adapted to be held by said extension.

6. As a new article of manufacture, a fixture arm having an opening in its end and an opening in one of its Walls, a member to close the open end of the arm and having a part to enter said arm and overlie the wall having the opening, and a nipple slidable through said opening and removably held in the extension.

7. As a new article of manufacture, a hollow fixture arm, a member to overlie the open end of the arm and including a part on one of its surfaces to enter and fit the interior of the arm, and also including an arm extending at right angles to the plane 01" said member provided with a threaded opening, and means to secure the member in the arm and carrying an electric lamp.
