To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT SECHRIST, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chandeliers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements inv lighting xtures of the chandelier and bracket type, my object being to provide a Construction which is extremely simple and therefore capable of manufacture at comparatively small cost.
An important feature of the device consists in the fact that what has heretofore been manufactured in three distinct pieces, viz., the tube arm, the end tting and the ornamental arm extending beyond the end fitting, are in my present invention composed of a single device through which the electrical conductors may be threaded before the device is applied to the fixture body, within the center of which is located a connector adapted to receive a multiplicity of tube arms, which have bayonet joint slots adapted to engage screws inserted in the nipple extremities of the connector, the tube arms slipping over these nipples and the screws being arranged to be tightened after the making of the bayonet joint connection, whereby the tube arms are tightly fastened against accidental removal. After the electrical conductors have been threaded through the device constituting the ornamental arm, the end fitting and the tube arm, they are carried into the fixture body and passed into the connector and up through the same with one hand, while, with the other hand, the tube arm is introduced into the fixture body and gradually moved to its position upon the connector, as heretofore described, the electrical conductors being then in position to be connected with the extremities of other conductors which are exposed within the fixture body for the purpose. During this operation, the upper half of the fixture body may be disconnected from the lower half and raised out of the way on the tube stem to permit, the manipulation of the conductors heretofore described. y y l I-Iaving briefly outlined my improved construction, I will proceed to describe the same in det-ail, reference being made to the accompanying drawing, in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof.
In this drawing: Figure 1 is a view of a chandelier, partly in elevation and partly in section, embodying my improvement, the bracket member on one side of the device being detached but ready for connection with the fixture body. Fig. 2 is a detail view of a universal joint member employed in connection with the mechanism. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of one of the brackets, shown in detail and on the same scale as in Fig. 1.
The same reference characters' indicate the same parts in all the views.
Let the numeral 5 designate a fixture body which, as illustrated in the drawing, is approximately spherical in shape, being composed of upper and lower semi-spherical members 6 and 7 whose inner circumferential edges overlap and are frictionally connected with a cylindrical member 4, as shown at 8 and 9.
Centrally located within the xture body, which is hollow, is a connector 10 Open to receive a pipe 12. This connectorhas a bottom opening 13, in 'which the said pipe fits closely, and a top opening 14, which is con-l siderably larger than the pipe for a purpose hereinafter explained. The central vertical Opening in the connector is in communication with lateral openings 15 adapted to receive electrical conductors 16. The pipe 12 passes through an opening 17 formed in the bottom of the fixture body, which is reinforced for the purpose, as shown at 18, forming a flat seat around the pipe, which protrudes below the fixture body and a nut 19 is threaded on t-he pipe below the fixture body to engagement with the said seat. Interposed between the bottom of the fixture body on the inside and the connector is a spacing sleeve 20, whose upper extremity enters a recess 21 formed in the bottom of the connector around the pipe 12; while ,a second spacing sleeve 22 is interposed between the bottom of the connector on the inside and a. nut 23 threaded on the pipe 12 above the connector, the said nut being interposed between the spacing sleeve 22 and a joint 24, whose lower extremity is threaded on the pipe above the nut, as shown at 25, while its upper extremity is inserted in the lower end of a tube stem 26, the two parts being connected by a bolt 27. The up per extremity of the tube stem is connected with a coupling 2S, which is hollow and threaded into a member 29 attached to the ceiling 30. This coupling member extends below the ceiling member 29 and is partly spherical in shape, to form a oint of the universal class, a bolt 31 being passed through the upper extremity of the tube stem and relatively large openings 32 formed in the lower part of the coupling member, thus giving the tube stem some play upon the coupling member to compensate for cases where the ceiling is not perfectly horizontal, and thus allowing the chandelier to assume a vertical position.
Each bracket member 33 is composed of a tube stem 34, an end fitting 35, and an ornamental arm 36, all of the said parts being secured together to form practically an integral device through which the elec-` trical conductors 16 may be threaded from the socket 37 at the outer extremity of the ornamental arm.
The central cylindrical part 4 of the fixture body is provided with relatively large openings 38 adapted to receive the tube arms 34 of the various brackets 33. These arms 34 closely fill the openings 38 and their inner extremities fit over nipples 40 formed on the connector 10 and having` shoulders 41 against which the inner extremities of the tube arms abut. Each of these tube arms has an angular slot 42 adapted to receive a screw 43 applied to the corresponding nipple, whereby a bayonet joint lock is formed between the tube arm and the nipple. By tightening this screw, the parts may be secured in the adjusted position against accidental displacement.. rlhe upper part 6 of the fixture body fits closely around the tube stem, but is slidable thereon, after loosening a set screw 44. This makes it practicable to slide this part 6 upwardly on the tube stem and fasten it there, if desired, while adjusting the electrical conductors in connection with the connector and the electrical conductors which have been passed through t-he vertically disposed tubular parts of the chandelier heretofore described.
From the foregoing description, the manner of assembling my improved chandelier will be readily understood. After the parts, except, the brackets 33 have been assembled, t-he upper part 6 of the canopy body may be moved upwardly on the tube stem to give access by the operator to the connector 10, whereby the electrical conductors 16 may be threaded through the connector and carried upwardly through the opening 14 around the spacing sleeve 22, with one hand, while the bracket 33 is taken into the other hand and its tube arm 34 inserted in the opening 38, its inner extremity being applied to a nipple 40 of the connector, as heretofore described.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim is 1. The combination with a hollow fixture body and means for suspending the same, of brackets composed of tube arms, end ttings and ornamental arms through which electrical conductors may be threaded, the tube arm members of the brackets being adapted to enter openings formed in the fixture body, a pipe entering the fixture body from below, its upper extremity being connected with the means for suspending the fixture body, a connector mounted on the said pipe and centrally located within the fixture body, the connector having lateral openings, and a top opening for receiving the electrical conductors, the connector also having shouldered nipples adapted to receive the inner extremities of the bracket tube arms, the latter being adapted to fit over the said nipples, and means applied to the tube arm extremities and attached to the connector for detachably securing the tube arms to the connector, for the purpose set forth.
2. ln a device of the class described, the combination with a hollow fixture body, of a pipe entering the same from below, a tube stem extending downwardly from the ceiling and entering the fixture body from above, suitable means located within the fixture body for connecting the said pipe wit-h the tube stem,aconnector located within the fixture body and having a vertical opening to receive the said pipe which passes therethrough, a spacing sleeve interposed between the bottom of the connector and the bottom of the fixture body for supporting the connector in place, a nut applied to the said pipe just below the means for connecting the pipe with the tube stem, a spacing sleeve interposed between the said nut and the bottom of the connector, brackets each composed of a tube arm, an end fitting and an ornamental arm through which electrical conductors are adapted to be passed, and suitable means for detachably securing the tube arm extremities of the said brackets to t-he said connector, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a hollow fixture body and means for suspending the same, including a joint, a connector centrally supported and mounted within the fixture body, a pipe entering the fixture body from below and having its upper extremity connected with the means for suspending the said fixture body, said pipe passing through the connector and entirely free therefrom, and brackets composed of tube arms, the extremities of which are adapted to enter the Xture body through openings in the sides thereof and support the connector therein, substantially as described. f'
4. The combination with a hollow xture body, of means for suspending the same, including a joint member to allow the canopy and its attachments to assume a proper position, brackets adapted to enter openings with which fixture body is provided, each bracket consisting of a tube arm, an
