To all "whom it may concern Be it known that I, CARL A. DIEonRIoI-rs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lighting Fixtures, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in lighting fixtures andparticularly to that class of lighting fixtures primarily deslgned for illuminating Christmas trees.

The primary objects ofthis invention are to provide a device of the character described which permits the uniform distribution of the lights on Christmas trees, which can be readily, rigidly and safely mounted thereon, adjustable, strong, durable andeificient in its use, simple in its construction and inexpensive to manufacture.

To the accomplishment of these and such other objects as may hereinafter appear the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts here in specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications in the minor details of construction may be resorted to which come within the scope of the claim hereunto appended.

Figure 1 is a front elevation illustrating a Christmas tree provided with lighting fixtures in accordance with this invention.

Figure 6 is a side View of a portion of an extension arm having mounted thereon a socket for electric lamp.

Referring more in detail to the drawing, there is shown in Figure 1 a Christmas tree 1 having astock or stem 2. around which is secured the clamping element 8, consisting of two semi-circular members 4;.

The members a are formed with the outwardly extending ears 5 and 6, which are apertured' for the reception of the winghead bolts 7, which are engaged in the threaded apertures of the ears 6, as clearly shown in Figure 2 of the drawing.

The clamping members are formed or provided with vertically extending rectangular slots 8 on their outer surfaces by securing corrugated strips to the members, that is to the periphery of the members 4 and the said slots 8 are for the reception of the downwardly bent rectanglar portion 9, of the arm 10. The slots 8 and downwardly bentportion 9 are shaped rectangularly to prevent the lateral movement of the said arm 10, when the bent portion 9 is inserted in the Slot 8.

The outer end of the arm 10 is bent downwardly, as at 11, and 'apertured for the passage of the extension arm 12, which is bent upwardly, as at 13, and apertured to permit the passage of the arm 10 in the like manner. The ends 11 and 12 are of the same length, but shorter than the portion 9, as well as being of less thickness than the said portion 9. The outer end of the arm extension 12 carries the pan or plate 14 to receive the drippings from the candles 15 which are mounted in the holder 16. The bent ends 11 and 18, of the arm 10 and arm extension 12, are flattened to provide ample stock for the apertures therethrough and are formed integrally with the arm and arm extension respectively.

By this construction and arrangement, it will be noted, that the extension arm 12, carrying the candle 15, may be readily slid inwardly or outwardly upon the arm 10, as desired to promote the symmetry and appearance of the tree.

In the modification illustrated in Figure 4, of the drawing, the extension arm 17 is identical to that described above with the exception that it is not formed with the upwardly bent portion 13 on its inner end, but has a threaded end 18 adapted to engage the threaded aperture 19 in the plate 20. The modified form of the arm 21 is of the same construction as the preferred form except that it is made from heavier stock or material than the complemental extension arm 17, for the purpose of providing greater rigidity when the extension arm 17 is extended to its limit.

The plate 20 is provided with the slot 22 for the passage of the arm 21. The threaded Ila-u:

aperture extending into the slot 22 on the lower side of the plate is providedfor the reception of the screw 23 for locking the extension arm 17 in the adjusted position.

Figure 6, of the drawing, illustrates a socket 24-, adapted "for the insertion of an electric lamp 25, mounted on the extension arm. The socket 524: has a vertically extending open slot 26 to facilitate the mounting of the lamps and wires therein.

The clamping element 27, shown in Figure 7, is similar in construction to the clamping element The members 28 and 29are hingedly connected at 30 and are formed With the ears 31 and 32, respectively. The ear 31 is apertured and the car 32 has a threaded aperture for receiving the clamping screw 33. The clamping element 27 is provided with the teeth 3e on its inner face to prevent vertical movement of the clamp ing element when same is attached to the tree. The teeth may be formed by the ends of the rivets 35, as shown, or in any other suitable manner. I

That I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

r A, device for the purpose set forth comprising a clamping element formed from a pair of opposed semi-circular members, connected together, a corrugated strip secured to the periphery of each of said members and providing in connection With each member a. series of vertically disposed square slots, an arm having each end thereof depending at an angle, the inner angular end being of greater length and greater thickness than the outer angular end of said arm and square in cross section, said inner end adapted to engage in one of said'slots'of the clamp whereby the arm is supported at an angle with respect to the clamp, said outer end being apertured, and a shiftable extension having an upwardly extending slotted inner end of the same length and thickness as the outer depending end of said arm, saidarm projecting through said inner end of the extension, said extension projecting through the outer end of the arm, said extension hav-' ing its outer end provided with an opening, an illuminating element mounted on the outer end of the extension, and means extending throughout said opening for connecting said element to said extension.
