1 Claim. (Cl. 67--25) This invention relates to a candelabrum and more especially to a new and improved type of candelabra for holding a plurality of candles in a tiered arrangement to simulate the appearance of a tree.
The invention relates to that class of candelabra commonly employed by florists and the like, such as in churches for use with weddings, funerals and on other occasions and it is an object of this invention to provide a candelabrum having a plurality of stepped tiers and each of said tiers having means thereon for holding candles so that the candles present a tree-like arrangement.
The candelabrum of the general type described, it is customary to use a base portion which may be ornamental if desired and to adjustably mount a candle holding member in the base portion 'of the candelabrum. It is another object of this invention to provide a candelabrum which may be used with conventional base members and which may be adjustably mounted therein which candelabrum comprises a plurality of at least three stepped tiers each having a plurality of candlejholders thereon arranged in an arcuate line. The arcuate lines of each tier correspond to the other tiers and all are on radii having the same centerbut being of progressively shorter lengths from bottom to top. Each of said tiers have a progressively smaller number of candles from bottom to top to provide a segmental tree-like arrangement.
More specifically, it is an object of this invention to provide a candelabrum which may be associated with a conventional base holder and which comprises a single vertically disposed center member with a first set of horizontally disposed arms extending radially therefrom and having a first arcuate holder secured on the outer ends thereof spaced outwardly from said center member. A second plurality of radially extending arms are provided spaced above said first arms and which extend outwardly from said center member and have a second arcuate candle holding means positioned on the outer end thereof, said second arcuate candle holding means being of shorter length than the first arcuate candle holding means and being spaced inwardly relatively to the center member. The candelabrum is also provided with at least one additional set of radially extending arms secured to the center member and extending. outwardly a distance shorter than the first-named and second-named radially extending arms and having a third substantially arcuate candle holding means secured thereto. Preferably, the center member extends upwardly beyond the third set of arms and has a single candle holder positioned on the top thereof to thus provide a tree-like candelabrum.
Some of the objects of the invention having been stated, otherobjects will appear as the description proceeds when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in which- Figure l is an isometric view of the tree-like candelabrum associated with a base holder;
Figure 2 is an enlarged side elevation of the supporting frame of the candelabrum looking at the left-hand side of 2,733,586 Patented Feb. 7, 1956 Figure l, but omitting the tiered candle holding means and showing only a portion of the base;
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional plan view looking along the line 3-3 in Figure 2;
Figure 4 is an enlarged sectional plan view looking along the line 44 in Figure 2;
Figure 5 is an enlarged sectional plan view looking along the line 5-5 in Figure 2;
Figure 6 is an enlarged fragmentary elevation of the endmost portions of the lower tier looking substantially along the line 6-6 in Figure 1.
Figure 7 is an enlarged vertical sectional view through an individual candle holding means taken along the line 7.7 in Figure l.
, Referringmore specifically to the drawings, there wil be observed a base member generally designated at 10 which may be of conventional or other type and with which the present invention is adapted to be associated. The base member 10 comprises a vertically disposed tubular portion 11 having legs 13 secured thereto for maintaining the tubular portion 11 in vertical position. The legs 13 may be ornamental if desired. The tubular portion 11 is preferably provided with a collar 14 at the upper end thereof and a thumb screw 15 to permit a stan ard to be slidably mounted in the tubular portion 11 and secured in the desired adjusted position by means of a thumb screw 15.
The candelabrum which is the subject of this invention is broadly designated at 20 and comprises a vertically disposed standard indicated at 21 which is adapted to be slidably mounted in the tubular portion 11 of the base or any other suitable base 10. The standard 21 extends upwardly and has a reduced upper portion 22. If desired, the standard 21 may be of the same thickness from top to bottom but in the interest of saving Weight, it is preferable that the upper portion be reduced as at 22. A plurality of candle holding tiers are associated with and supported by the standard 21 and as illustrated, three tiers are formed which are broadly designated as 23, 24 and 25.
Each of the tiers 23, 24 and 25 is supported by suitable horizontally extending arms fixed to and extending radially from the standard 21 and portion 22. The lower supporting arms, that is, the arms for the tier 23, are indicated at 26, 27 and 28. The arms 26, 27 and 28 are suitably secured to the standard 21, as by welding, and extend outwardly radially from the standard and the outermost ends of these arms terminate in an arcuate line having the standard 21 as its center. If desired, the arms 26, 27 and 28 may be suitable metal rods having one end secured to the standard 21. However, for purposes of additional strength, it is desirable that each of the arms 27, 26 and 28 be connected to the horizontally disposed arms of the next tier and to this end it will be observed that the support arm 26 is bent at right angles and extends upwardly as at 34) along the standard 21 and this portion 30 is suitably secured to the standard 21 and the arm is again bent at right angles and extends outwardly as at 31 to form a supporting arm for the second tier 24. The arm 27 is bent at right angles and extends upwardly in a like manner and then is again bent at right angles and extends outwardly as at 32 forming an additional supporting arm for the tier 24.
The supporting arm 28 is bent at right angles adjacent the standard 21 and extends upwardly in a like manner as at 33 and is again bent at right angles and extends out.-
wardly as at 34 forming an additional supporting arm for 3 shorter radius. Suitable vertically disposed brace rods 35, 36 and 37 are positioned between the respective arms 31 and 26, 32 and 27, and 34 and 28 to lend additional upport to the tier 24.
A third set of two horizontally disposed support arms indicated at 49 and 42 are secured at their innermost ends to the portion 22 of the standard 21 and being spaced above'the support rods 31 and 34. These rods 40 and 42 extend outwardly radially from the standard portion 22 and the outermost ends thereof terminate in an arcuate line having the standard 21 as its center. The rods 40 and 42 are of a lesser length than the rods 31, 32 and 34 and it will be observed that the arcuate line of the tier 25 is thus concentric with the tiers 24 and 23 but is formed on a shorter radius. The rods 40 and 42 are supported intermediate their ends on re-enforcing brace rods 41 fixed to the horizontal rods 31 and 34. i
The portion 22 ofstandard 21 extends upwardly beyond the rods 40 and 42 and is provided with a candle holder 43 and a drip pan 44 fixed to the upper end thereof as by welding.
Thestructure just described comprises the framework of the candelabrum and, to this framework there are secured arcuate candle supports. The supports for the lower tier 23 comprise a pair of strap iron members 45 and 46 which are suitably bent and twisted to extend in concentric arcuate lines, the member 46 being spaced inwardly from the member 45 and being formed on a radius having the same center point but shorter than the radius of the member 45. The members 45 and 46 are preferably twisted, as at 47, at spaced points between their ends and may be rolled at their ends, as at 48, for ornamental appearances.
The members 45 and 46 are suitably secured to the outermost portions of the radially extending rods 26, 27 and 28, as by welding, and are connected at spaced points intermediate their ends by horizontally disposed spacer strap members 50. Each of the strap members 50 is provided with a drip pan 51 suitably secured thereto, as by welding, and a candle holding cup 52 centrally positioned and fixed to each drip pan 51. Any desired number of brace members 50 and drip pans and candle holders 51 and 52 may be provided and in the present illustration, it will be observed that the tier 23 is provided with nine candle holders 52 for holding nine candles in upright or vertically disposed position in an arcuate line partially around the standard 21.
The candle supporting means of the second tier 24 is formed from a pair of strap members such as strap iron members 55 and 56 which members extend in arcuate lines, the member 56 being spaced inwardly from the member 45 relative to the standard 21 and being formed on a radius having the same center point but shorter than the radius of the member 55.
The members 55 and 56 are preferably bent andtwisted intermediate their ends as at 57 and may be rolled at their ends for ornamental purposes. The members 55 and 56 are secured to the outermost portions of the horizontally disposed support arms 31, 32 and 34, as by welding, and are connected intermediate their ends by a plurality of spacer strap members 60 which are barely visible in Figure 1 and which correspond to the spacer members 50. Each of the spacer members 60 carries a drip pan 61 and a candle receiving cup 62 centrally afiixed in the drip pan 61. The drip pans 61 and the cups 62 are similar to or like the drip pans 51, 52 and 44, 43. A plurality of such candle holding means may be provided and as illustrated, eight drip pans 61 are provided on the tier 24.
The third or uppermost tier 25 is formed in a similar manner from a pair of strap members 65 and 66 which are substantially arcuate in configuration. The strap member 66 is formed on a radius having the same center point but shorter than the radius of the strap member 65, and the member 66 is positioned inwardly relative to the standard 21. Each of the strap members 65 and 66 may be twisted at spaced intervals as at 67 and rolled at their ends for ornamental purposes, if desired. The members 65 and 66 are connected intermediate their ends by a plurality of spacer members which are not visible in the drawings but which are of likeconstruction to the spacer members 5% and 6t; and which support a plurality of drip pans 71 having candle holding cups 72 affixed to the central portions thereof. Any desired number of candle holders may be provided and as illustrated the tier 25 is provided with four candle receiving cups.
it will thus be observed that candles may be positioned in the cups 52, 62 and '72 and a candle may be positioned in the cup 43 so that the candles will be vertically disposed in a plurality of arcuate lines concentric with each other and spaced upwardly and inwardly progressively from the bottom to the top to form a segmental tree-like arrangement.
it is to be understood that the standard 21 may be of the same size throughout and the supporting arms may be secured thereto in any desired manner and the invention is not limited to the welded construction shown.
In the drawings and specification there has been set forth a preferred embodiment of the invention and, although specific terms are employed, they are used in a generic and descriptive sense only and not for purposes of limitation, the scope of the invention being defined in the claims. 7
