JAMES KENERSON, OF NEWPORT, HAMPSHIRE, ASSIGNOR TO,
' HIMSELF {\ND EDMUND BURKE, OF- SAME PLACE.
Letters Patentlil'o. 106,173, dated August 9, 1870.
mrnovmvmn'r m LAMP-SHADE AND REFLECTORS.
I The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
Be it knownthat I, JAMES M. KENERSON, of Newport, in the county of Sullivan and State of New Hampshire, have invented anew and useful Improvementin Lamp-Shades and Reflectors applied to the ordinary house-lamp, whiclrI denominate Kenersons Improved Combined Lamp-Shade and Reflector;
and I do declare that the following is a full and exact. description thereof, referencebeing hadto the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, inakinga part of this. specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the employment of highly burnished copper for the concave or reflecting-surface ot' lamp-shades and reflectors, which ,not only condenses and reflects the light of the lamp,
but gives ita rich, mellow, golden hue, making it less dazzling and more agreeable to the eyes of persons .usingjhe lamp.
Mysimproved shade and reflector consists ,of a con- 9 oavo-convex plate, A, the inner or concave surface of 3 which is made of highly polished or burnished copper,
about four inches in diameter, the center of which may be made alittleoonvemif desired.
. 'lll e'outcr or convex surface of plate A may be covered over with aslight coating of tin, or paint, ot' su'ch color as may be preferred.
E is a slat soldered upon the convex surface of plate :A, through which the angular springO passes, and
uponwhich the plate A canbe made to move up'and down,.and adjusted atan'y desired point on the spring when in use;
B is a thumb-spring, constituted of the two side pieces b b and thespring D, the latter-being made in the form of the letter V, by which the two side pieces bb' are united, the spring B serving to fasten the shade and reflector to the neck of the lamp.
My improved shade and reflector maybe used both as a shade and reflector. After having been fastened to the neck of the lamp by the thumb-spring B, if used as a shade, the convex surface of plate A should be turned toward the person using it, the plate A being adjusted at such a point on the angular spring O as convenience may require.
If it is desired to use plate A as a reflector, the
concave surface should be placed on the opposite side of the lamp, turned toward the person using it, and
adjusted at such a point upon the spring 0 as 'convenience may require. v
\Vhen used as a reflector, the copper surface of plate A throws a rich and mellow light upon the object on which it is reflected. If reflected upon a printed page,
it gives the paper that tinted color deemed so favorable to-the eyes, and great distinctness to the printed letters. I a
, The reflector may be made to surround the lamp wholly or in part, in which form, or in any 'form of a reflector, I claim the burnished copper surface, if used.
Having described the construction and uses of my improved lamp-shade and reflector,
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Thev employment-of polished or burnished copper surfaces in the construction of lamp-reflectors, as herein set forth.
JAMES. M. KEN ERSON.
