Description

3J. W. LARIll/IORE,` OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND ALONZO MARKS, OF SAME PLACE,
Letters Patent No. 96,121, dated October 26, 1869; arttedated October 12, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN SIGNS POR STREET-LAMPS.
The Schedule referred toin these Letters Patent and `making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, J. W. LARIMORE, of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improve- Vments in the Construction and Arrangement of Signs on StreetfLamps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this speciiication, and to t-he letters of reference marked thereon. v
The obsiectof my invention is to .provide a simple, cheap, and novel means, whereby the names of streets, in a city or town, maybe plainly indicated at night on' lamps placed at the intersection of streets, in a more perfect manner than has hitherto been effected by any device heretofore used for that purpose.
Thenature' of my invention consists in the use or employment of four sheetmetal plates of suitable dimensions, fastened together at their ends in such a manner as to form a square frame, on which the names of the streets are painted. This frame is made to slide over the top of the lamp, and fixed thereon by means of springs or other suitable fastenings with which it is provided, and each of its four sides is thrown forward at an angle of about thirty degrees, or other suitable degree of inclination, so that the rays of light emitted from the jet within the lamp are thrown on .the surfaces of its four sides, on which the names of the streets are painted, by which means the names of the streets are made distinct-ly legible at a considera-y ble distance. b
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
Figure I is a side elevation of a lamp with my improved device attached thereto. 1
Figure I I is a top plan view of the same.
Letters of like name and kind indicate like parts in each of the figures.
A is an ordinary street-lamp, constructed in the usual manner.
B is tbe frame, on which the naines of the streets are painted.
This frame is nade of any of the sheetfmetals or other materials adapted for the purpose, and is made to fit on the top of the lamp A, to which it is attached by means of any suitable springs or'fastenings, D D, so as to be secured in the desired position, and is so constructed that the outer surfaces of its four sides,
on which the naines of the streets are painted, shall 'be inclinedfrom the perpendicular at an angle of thirty degrees, more or less, so as to receive the rays'of light emitted from the iiame C, so that, by the strong light thus cast upon the said surfaces, the names painted thereon are distinctly' visible, and plainly and readily indicated to persons passing along. the streets.
The advantages ot' this invention are obvious, for
signs have been constructed and arranged `so as to throw the light upon the letters on a sign, secured by means of springs, as set forth in my invention. And it may be observed that the eye is not dazzled by the light while reading the name, when arranged as herein described.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, isvas follows:
The arrangement of the frame B, on which `the names of the streets are painted, inclined forward ata suitable angle,l and provided with the springs or other fastenings D D, in connection with an ordinary streetlamp, A, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
