GEORGE CLEMENTS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO (ELEMENTS MFG. CO., A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
BELLOWS ATTACHMENT FOR VACUUM-CLEANERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 6,1913.-
Application filed November 22, 1912. Serial No. 732,813.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE CLEMENTS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Bellows Attachments for Vacuum-Cleaners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a bellows attachment for vacuum cleaners, and has for its object particularly to provide means whereby the link from the crank which drives the bellows may be attached to the bellows top.
Heretofore in these structures a good deal of difliculty has been encountered because of the tendency of the attachment to break or detach itself from the bellows in actual practice. The apparatus works somewhat rapidly, expanding and compressing the bellows and under a good deal of pressure. Of course, in apparatuses of this kind it is not possible to use very heavy parts, because the weight thereof is objectionable and there is but little room for heavy or cumbersome connections.
Various forms of attachment have been used, but the tendency either to loosen the screws or to break the connecting parts is so great that constant repairs and replacements are the rule.
My invention is intended to obviate these difliculties.
It is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein- Figure 1 is a detail side elevation of my device, and Fig. 2 a plan view of the same. In each case parts are shown in dotted lines.
Like parts are indicated by the same let; ter in both the figures.
A is the bellows having the top A The securing plate consists of the body B having perforations and screws B B whereby it is secured to the top of the bellows. The securing plate has also the downwardly depending apron B perforated at three points and the upwardly-turned lips 13 B and 13*. These parts are all integral with each other and the three lips are perforated in alinement with the perforations of the apron.
D, D are angle bars adapted each to be inserted bet-ween one of the outer lips and the apron and between two adjacent lips as indicated in Fig. 2. Each is perforated to register with the perforations in the apron and lip between which it lies. They are also perforated to admit the transverse bolt E to which the upper end of the link F is pivoted. G, G are the outer screws and H the inner screw.
The parts are assembled and utilized in the following manner: The securing plate, shaped as shown with the body apron and lips, has the inner screw H passed through its central perforations. Then the two angle bars are driven into position. The securing plate is now placed on the edge of the upper portion of the bellows in the right position and secured by the live screws. The link is now placed in position in front of the middle screw G and between the two angle bars and secured in this position by the transverse bolt. The relation of the parts are such that the nature of the link is in close proximity to the screw G and tends to keep it from getting out of position.
I claim:
1. A bellows attachment for vacuum cleaners comprising a securing plate consisting of a body and apron and three lips arranged as shOWn, in combination with two angle bars which lie respectively between the apron and one of the lips and means for attaching the securing plate to the bellows top and the link between the angle bars.
2. A bellows attachment for vacuum cleaners comprising a securing plate consisting of a body and three lips arranged as shown and integral with each other, in combination with two angle bars which lie respectively between the apron and one of the lips and means for attaching the securing plate to the bellows top and the link between the angle bars.
3. A bellows attachment for vacuum cleaners comprising a securing plate consisting of a body and apron and three lips arranged as shown, in combination with two angle bars which lie respectively between the apron and one of the lips and means for attaching the securing plate to the bellows top and the link between the angle bars embracing a screw which passes through a lip and apron between the angle bars and in close proximity to the end of the link.
4:. A. bellows attachment for vacuum cleaners comprising a securing plate con sisting of a body and apron and three lips arranged as shown and integral with each other, in combination with two angle bars which lie respectively between the apron In testimony whereof, I affix my signature and one of the lips and means for attaching in the presence of two witnesses this 20th the securing plate to the bellows top and clay of November, 1912.
