To all whom, t may concern.'

Be it known that I, BENJIMAN MILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Talla lValla, in the county of Talla Valla, State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knife Gages; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in knife gages, and has for its principal object to provide a gage by means of which strips of leather or other material may be easily cut.

Another object of the invention is to provide a gage of the character described by means of which strips of different widths may be cut.

A further object of the invention is to provide a gage for the purpose described which is of such construction as to permit of a knife being instantly removed or attached thereto.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a knife gage of the character described which is of such construction as to friet-ionally engage the leather during its movement therealong, whereby said gage will be held in engagement with the leather without the necessity of the operator other than bearing his thumb upon the gage.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a gage of the character described which is composed of a relatively few num ber of parts, is therefore simple in construction and is cheap to manufacture.

l/Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

Referring to the drawing, my improved ga ge is indicated as a whole by the reference letter A. This gage comprises a body which is formed fro-m a pair of flat metal plates 5h55 of uniform size, one end portion 6 of each plate being bent at right angles and disposed against each other to form a guide and consequent upper and lower plates 7 and 8 respectively. The end walls 6 are connected together by means of set screws 9 9 or other suitable means, and these walls are respectively formed with centrally disposed registering openings 1010.

A clamping plate 11 is disposed between the upper and lower plates 7 and 8, and projecting from one end thereof is a head 12 which is connected to the plate by a neck 13, said neck riding in the registering openings 10 and the head being disposed beyond the end walls 6. By means of this constructio-n the clamping plate 11 is capable of moving toward or away from the lower plate 8, and at same time is prevented from any longitudinal or lateral movements. ln order to yieldably hold the clamping plate 11 toward the bottom plate 8, there is provided a U.shaped guide pin 14, the legs 15h15 thereof sliding in suitable openings formed in the top plate7 and have their lower ends connected centrally to the clamping plate 11. Disposed around each leg 15 intermediate the plate 11 and the upper plate 7 is a coil spring 16 which tends to normally urge the clamping plate 11 toward the bottom plate 8. It will be observed that the bight of the guide pin 14 extends above the upper plate 7 to form a fnger-piece.

Formed in the upper and lower plates 7 and 8, and the clamping plate 11 is a series of spaced transverse knife-receiving openings 17. The respective openings of the plates are arranged in registration for permitting a knife blade being readily inserted thereinto.
