NIATFCUTTAING BOARD-- no, 823,685. I
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application iiled January 20, 1906- .Scria 11l'0:. 296, 949.
To an whom, 22;; may concern:
a citizen of the United States, residing in .Paterson, county of Passaic, State of New 1 Jersey, have invented certain new and'useful Improvements in Mat-Cutting Boards; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accom- .panying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention 1s an lmprovement 1n boards for use in cutting picture-mats and the like,
\ and it has for its object to provide a device of this nature which shall be less expensive in construction and more easily and accurately manipulated than others of its kind at present in use. v
To this end my invention consists, broadly, in a base-board having an abutment for one side of the sheet to be cut, guideways arranged at right angles to said abutment, guides arranged to travel on said guideways,
over the based-board.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view thereof; Fig. 3, a side View of the front portion thereof enlarged, showing certain portions in section. Fig. 4 is a front view of the invention enlarged, also showing certain portions in section. Fig. 5 is a plan view of one end of the'cutting member, and Fig. 6 shows one of the guides.
The base-board a is preferably made of a series of sections dovetailed together edge to edge, as best shown in Fig. 3. The sides of the board are preferably squared up so as to make the same a true rectangle.
b is a strip which is secured along the outer side of one of the end sections of the baseboard and whose top edge projects slightly above it, thereby forming an abutment 0, against which. one edge of the mat to be cut is placed. Along the two sides or edges of the base-board which are at right angles to the strip 6 are secured, as by screws (1, other strips 6, which are preferably of metal and stand flush at. the top and bottom with the and a cuttin -bar movable with said guides.
top and under sides of the base-board. Just inside of each strip e the top face of the baseboard is grooved, as at 7", from the strip 6 to 'each having lugs together.
- side of the mat..
and reintroduced with another side against this groove isfitteda gageor rule gage orrule may be secured by screws/7v. The front portion of the upper face of -the base-board is furthermore provided with a recess 56', extending from one gage g to the other and'having a width corresponding to the maximum width or de th of picturemats ordinarily used. In t 's recess is arranged a sheet of plate-glass or the like j.
k is a cutting-bar lying crosswise oi the base-board i. 6., parallel of the abutment cthe edge thereof toward the abutment being beveled, as at Z. This cutting-bar is adapted to be adjusted to and from the abutment 0 with reference to the gages g, and for this purpose its ends are formed as projections m, which rest in recesses n in guides 0, (p, adapted to move in guideways g, forme in the strips e, and each guide also having a screw q, whose shank projects through the guideway g and whose head works in a groove 1', into which said guideway opens, said groove being formed on the inside of the strip e. Each guide may be fixed at any desired position by a wing-nut s on its screw g, which acts with the head r of the said screw to clamp the guide and strip hold the mat being cut firmly in position.
The usualcleats t may be secured tothe under side of the board.
.In the use of the board the mat to be cut, which is assumed to have already had its outer edges cut to a true rectan le, is laid on the board under member k (w 'ch may be lifted from the guides o for this purpose,) with one edge squarely against the abutment 0. The cutting-bar is then adjusted to a distance from the abutment corresponding to the width or depthv of the mat to be cut, whereupon a knife is drawn along the beveled edge of the cutting-bar, thereby cutting one The mat is then withdrawn the abutment c and the cuttin operation repeated, and so on. Should t e plate j become broken or damaged, it may be removed by first removing one of the gages g, so that Letters Patent, is the rear side or edge of the base-board, and in V In a device for use in cutting picture-mats and the like, the combination of a base-board having an abutment for one side of the mat to be out and two opposite sides thereof arranged at right angles to said abutment, slotted strips arranged against said sides, screws arranged in the slots of said strips and having their heads projecting inwardly, a guide carried by each screw and having uploosely between the lugs of and adapted to move with, said guides, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I 15 have hereunto set my hand this 18th day of January, 1906.
