VENEER TRIMMER AND GAGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 23, 1915.
Application filed December 5, 1914. Serial No. 875,598.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, LoUIs WALiooRsKI, subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Veneer Trimmers and Gages, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in veneer trimmers and gages.
The primary object of the device is to provide a means whereby thin material such as wood'or paper if desired may be trimmed at the edge thereof and the distance of the cut from the edge being capable of accurate regulation.
A further object is to provide an edge cutter by means of which veneer may be cut into strips of the desired width, and pieces of veneering may have the edges thereof accurately trimmed.
A still further object is to provide a combined cutter and gage and by means of which the work may be scribed or marked, as well as cut when desired, the device being provided with an adjustable cutter, as well as an adjustable positioning plate arranged opposite the cutter.
With these general objects in View and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and set forth in the appended claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like-designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device partially broken away. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the base member, and, Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the shiftable guide plate detached.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, a base block 10 is provided for adjustably mounting thereon a cutter frame 11 and a guide plate 12. The said base has one face thereof provided with a chamber 13 from which a screw 1 L projects, being centrally mounted therein. The upper threaded end 15 of the said screw is positioned through a slot 16 in the frame 11 whereby the frame is slidably mounted upon the base and may be adjustably secured in the desired position by a lock nut 17 upon the screw end 15. It is to be noted that the frame has a block 18 at one end thereof which is provided with an inner chamber 19, one end wall 20 at the outer end of the block being cut away at the bottom thereof as at 21 for allowing the block to slide longitudinally upon the base by means of the lower edge portions 22 of the block sides which are slidably positioned in the opposite longitudinal edge slots 28 of the base.
The inner end of the base is provided with a transverse dove tail groove 24; in which is slidably positioned a dove tail block 25 of the guide plate 12 while a set screw 26 is carried by the base and is adapted to engage the guide plate block 25 for retaining the guide plate in the desired adjusted position. It is also noted that the width of the guide plate is sufficient to allow the longer edge 27 thereof to flatly engage the lower face 28 of the cutter frame 11 when desired, although the guide plate may be relatively shifted as shown in Fig. 1, the said plate having an outer reduced narrower portion 29 opposite the edge 27. The end of the block 18 opposite the end wall 20 is entirely removed and adapted to accommodate the dove-tail block 25 of the plate 12 when the knife is positioned for the widest cut and with the adjacent end of the block 18 in engagement with the rear face of the plate 12.
The cutter frame is provided with a hand hold knob 30 laterally projecting therefrom and upon the opposite side thereof from the block 18 and at the opposite end of the frame from the said block, while a laterally projecting rectangular boss 31 is mounted upon the same side of the frame as the said knob and is provided with a central slot 32 through which a cutter or knife 33 is adjustably positioned and retained therein by means of the set screw 34.
When desired to either scribe or cut material with the device, the nut 17 is slightly released and the cutter frame slid upon the base to position the sharpened end 35 of the knife at the required distance from the adjacent face of the guide plate to allow the knife to out the desired distance from the edge of the material when flatly engaged by the said plate. When the device is grasped by the hands of the operator by taking hold of the knob 30 and the base 10,
the guide plate is positioned fiatly against the edge of the material to be operated upon and the knife pressed into the material and the instrument forcibly drawn forward thus cutting or scribing the same by means of the knife in the manner desired. The depth of cut afforded by the knife may be regulated by longitudinally shifting the knife and retaining the same by the set screw 34:, while the guide plate 12 may be correspondingly shifted and retained by means of the set screw 26. It will of course be understood that the present device may be formed of metal or wood or any desired material and that the same is adapted for other analogous uses from those herein enumerated.
While the form of the invention herein shown and described is what is believed to be the preferred embodiment thereof, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim as new is 1. A device of the class described comprising a base having a chamber in one side thereof, a laterally projecting screw centrally mounted within the said chamber, a frame having a chambered block at one end thereof and slidably mounted upon said base and having a longitudinal slot through which the said screw projects, a
set nut upon the said screw, a shiftable guide plate carried by the inner end of the said block, an adjustable knife carried by the said frame and oppositely positioned with respect to said plate, and a set screw for the said knife.
2. A device of the class described comprising a base, a laterally projecting screw centrally carried thereby, a guide plate transversely shiftable with respect to said base, a dove tail member upon said plate and adjustably secured to one end of the case, the said plate being of greater width and length than the said base end, a cutter frame having an integral block portion upon one face thereof at one end of the frame slidably mounted upon the said base, a lock nut for said frame mounted upon the said screw, a boss and a hand knob carried by the face of said frame opposite the said block portion, a knife slidably mounted in the said boss shiftable in the same direction as the said plate, the forward end of said block portion being cut away, the said dove tail member being positioned within said cut-away portion when the forward end of said block portion is in engagement with the said plate.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
