CHlSEL- GAG E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 660,012, dated October 16, 1900. Application filed October 10, 1899. Renewed August 9,1900. Serial No. 26,447. (No model.)
To whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CARL EDVARD HARLING, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, (Brooklyn,) in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chisel-Gages; and I do declare the following to be a ful1,clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improved chiselgage for determining the depth of cut in fitting hinges; and the object is to provide a simple and convenient tool or gage to accurately perform this operation.
To this end the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the several elements of the device, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the clams.
In the accompanying drawings the same reference characters indicate the same parts of the device.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved chiseLgage. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the gage as it appears when in use. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 4 is an end view. Fig. 5 is a transverse section. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section.
1 denotes a rectangular case in which is mounted the cross-head 2, formed with the parallel arms 3 3, which terminate in the rightangular gage-toes 4 4.
5 denotes an adjusting-screw which has a threaded engagement with the cross-head, and it is manipulated by its milled head 6, which extends through alined orifices in the parallel walls of the casing for conveniently adjusting the toes to and from the flanged face 7 of the gage proper, and 8 8 denote milledhead binding-screws, which serve to lock the cross-head in its adjusted position.
9 9 denote graduated scales on the parallel arms 3 3 to facilitate their accurate adjustment, and 10 denotes a thumb-screw clamp pivoted to the case to secure it in position on the work.
In using the tool, for instance, in mortising a blind to receive its hinges the casing is placed against the face of the blind, with the toes of the arms 3 3 res ting upon the edge of the blind. The milled head 6 is adjusted to lower the casing with respect to the toes to get the desired depth of the mortise, and the set-screws 8 are then clamped to hold the parts in proper adjustment. After the usual cuts have been made to outline the mortise the chisel is held in a horizontal position and supported upon the flanged face 7and is manipulated in a horizontal position to cut out the mortise, the depth of the mortise being gaged by said flanged face 7.
The accompanying drawings show my invention in the best form now known to me; but many changes in the details might be made within the skill of a good mechanic without departing from the spirit of my invention as set forth in the claims at the end of this specification.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s-
1. In a chisel-gage, the combination with the casing having a tool-supporting face, of parallel arms mounted in said casing and provided with angular supporting-toes, means for vertically adjusting said arms simultaneously, and means for clamping said arms in their adjusted position, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The casing, 1, formed with the flanged face, 7, the cross-head, 2, having a sliding engagement with said casing and formed with the parallel arms, 3 3, terminating at their outer ends in the right-angular toes, 4., means for vertically adjusting said toes, and the clamp, 10, pivoted to said casing, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CARL EDVARD I-IARLING.
