A. LAWRENCE PLANE Filed March 17 1925 Patented Mar. 16 1926.
car-Tee STATES AUGUST LAWRENCE, OF MG'KEESPORT, PENNSYLVANIA.
,PLANE.
Application filed March 17, 1925. Serial No. 16,229.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUcUsr LAWRnNona cit zen of the United States, residing at McKeesport, in the county of Allegheny and floor coverings whereby the marginal portions of adjacent strips may be brought into close contact at all points therealong resulting in substantially an invisible seam.
Another object of the invention is to provide a tool of this kind which is adapted to be employed with advantage in connection with a strip to be trimmed while such strip is laid out on a floor or the like.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved plane whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in perspective illustrating a plane constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a View in top plan of the device as herein disclosed;
Figure 3 is a view in elevation of the working side of the plane;
Figure 4 is a view in end elevation of the device as herein disclosed.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawing, my improved plane comprises a block or stock B of requisite dimensions and configuration and preferably oblong in top plan, the front side marginal portion of the block being reduced in thickness, said reduced portion 1 extending the major dis-- tance across the block. The thinner mar ginal portion 1 of the block or stock B is provided with a transversely disposed slot or recess 2 disposed entirely through said portion Land openat its outer end, one wall aof said slot being suitably inclined to provide abedfor the bit The inner end of theslot 2 is continued by an opening disposed through the thicker marginal portion of the block or stock B, the bed a being continued therealong, said opening also providing the usual abutting wall 6 between which and the applied bit 3 is driven the usual type of wedge 4.
The outer or free longitudinal marginal edge face of the reduced portion 1 has secured thereto at opposite sides of the recess 2 the wear plates 5, said plates being herein disclosed as held in desired position by the screws 6, said plates being adapted to be replaced when unduly worn or otherwise unfit for use. Overlying the under or bottom face of the block or stock B and detachably held thereto by the screws 7 is a plate 8. The plate 8 is disposed entirely over this under or bottom face of the block or stock B with a longitudinal marginal portion thereof extending, as at 9, a desired distance beyond the plates 5, said extended portion 9 being adapted to underlie the marginal portion of an oilcloth strip or the like to be trimmed. The plate 8 is adapted to be replaced if the same becomes unduly wornand as in practice my plane is generally used with this plate 8 in direct contact with a floor or kindred surface it will readily be' understood that it is of great importance to have this plate 8 removably or detachably secured to the block or stock B. 1
Attached to the reduced portion 1 0f the body or stock B at a desired point thereon is the toat or handle 10. The toat or handle is preferably held by the screw 11 or the like to the upper or outer surface of the reduced portion 1 of the block or stock B at a point immediately adjacent to and in contact with the shoulder 12 extending lengthwise of theblock or stock B with said toat or handle 10 substantially perpendicularly related to the plate 8.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a plane constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as here inafter claimed.
I claim 1. A plane for trimming the edge of a strip of floor covering comprising a stock, a plate overlying a face of said stock and extending beyond a marginal portion of the stock, the extended portion of the plate being adapted to underlap the marginal portion of the strip to be trimmed, and a cutting bit held by the stock and projecting beyond the margin of the stock with which the extension of the plate is associated.
2. A plane for trimming the edge of a strip of floor covering comprising a stock, a plate overlying a face of said stock and extending beyond a marginal portion of the stock, the extended portion of the plate being adapted to nnderlap the marginal portion of the strip to be trimmed, a cutting bit transversely disposed through a horizontal opening in the stock and projecting beyond the margin of the stock with which the extension of the plate is associated, and adjustable means for detachably holding the bit to the stock.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature AUGUST Li UVRENCE.
