MAURICE KIRBY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COAT-CLAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 15, 1913.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, MAURICE S. KIRBY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Coat-Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a garment hanger and more particularly to the class of devices for preventing the wrinkling of garments when supported by coat hangers of the ordinary construction.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device which may be att-ached to the front section of a coat when suspended .from the coat hanger so that the said garment will not become creased or wrinkled when not in use and hung upon said coat hanger.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which may be connected to either a single or double breasted coat and that will sustain the same in proper shape when supported on the coat hanger of the ordinary well known construction.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is the front elevation of the coat hanger with coat in place thereon and the invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the device removed from the coat.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 5 designates an ordinary well known coat hanger and 6 a coat supported thereby, the coat being provided with the usual front section 7 and 8 the latter having secured thereto buttons 9 while the section 7 is provided with the usual button holes 10. This coat' 6 is suspended or supported upon the coat hanger 5 in the manner as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings as is usual.
The device which constitutes my invention comprises a substantially U-shaped body of strip metal which is bent, as at 12, so as to form the parallel, spaced inner and outer arms 11 and 11a, respectively, which are adapted to embrace the section 8 of the coat.
The outer arm 11a of the device is provided adjacent the bent portion 12 with a bayonet slot 13 whose vertical extension opens through the lower edge of the said arm. This bayonet slot is adapted to engage one of the buttons 9 on the section 8 of the coat so as to aid in supporting the device and to lock the said section against withdrawal from between the parallel arms of the same, the said arms serving to hold the end section 8 in smooth extended shape. The outer end of the arm 11n is bifurcated and provided with a lateral hook member 11 whose outwardly extending bill 15 is adapted for engagement with the button hole 10 of the outer coat' section 7, so that the latter will be maintained in the desired overlapping relation to the section 8 when the coat is supported by the hanger. The coat is thereby prevented from becoming creased or wrinkled.
In using the device, after the coat has been placed upon the hanger, the coat section 8 is inserted between the embracing arms of the device so as to be held smoothly and rmly therebetween, one of the buttons 9 on this section of the coat being inserted within the bayonet slot 13. The outer section 7 of the coat is then drawn into its overlapping position and the corresponding button hole 10 has the bill 15 of the hook inserted therethrough so as to hold the coat section in this position. It will thus be seen that the coat sections are supported at points adjacent their vertical edges thus stretching the said sections into smooth unwrinkled shape.
What is claimed is A device adapted to hold the front sections of a coat in overlapped relation, comprising an elongated U-shaped member having inner and outer horizontal arms adapted to embrace the inner overlapped portion of the coat, and hold such portion against wrinkling, said outer arm being provided with a bayonet slot consisting ofl a vertical portion opening out through the lower edge of said outer arm and the horizontal portion extending in the direction of the free end of said arm, and a hook located on said outer arm and extending in the direction of its free end, said hook being adapted to engage in one of the button holes in the outer overlapped portion of the coat, and the In testimony whereof I aix my signature bayonet slot being located at a point interin presence of two Witnesses.
mediate the ends of the said outer arm so as t0 permit the application of the device to MAURICE S' KIRBY' 5 coats having buttons located at various dislVitnesses:
tances from the inner edge of said inner F. E. TRUDE,
overlapped portion. I R. BURNIT.
