ject is to provide a new and improved lug strap for picker sticks, arranged to insure a proper transmission of the power applied to the picker stick, to prevent accidental shifting of the lug strap of the picker stick, and to avoid weakening of the picker stick by holes, notches or the like.

For the purpose mentioned use is made of sweep straps carrying a striking member between them, links pivotally connected with the said straps, and a support on the picker stick and on which the said links are pivi oted.

A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the lug strap as applied to a picker stick; Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same; Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation of the same, parts being broken out; and Fig. 4 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line 44 of Fig. 1.

To the outer side of a picker stick A of the usual construction is clamped a support B by the use of a clamp C, and the said support B is preferably formed of a bar provided at its upper end with a transversely-extending pivot pin D on which are pivoted downwardly-hanging links E pivotally engaging pivots F held on the sweep straps G spaced apart to permit the free passage of the picker stick A and the support B between the said straps G. The inner ends of the sweep straps G are connected by a transversely-extending bolt H with the sweep stick I connected with the usual machinery for imparting the desired motion to the picker stick A, as hereinafter more fully explained. The outer ends of the sweep straps G support a transverse bolt J on which is mounted a striking member K, preferably formed of disks of leather fabric, or other material, to give a cushion- Specification of Letters Patent.

1 ing effect to the striking member at the time the latter engages the outer side of the support B. When the sweep stick I is moved inward in the direct-ion of the arrow a then the sweep straps G move with the sweep stick and as the said straps G are hung on the swinging links E, it is evident that the striking member K finally comes in contact with the outer side of the support B and thus imparts a swinging motion to the support B and the picker stick A on which the said support B is fastened;

hen the sweep stick I moves in the inverse direction of the arrow a and the picker stick A is returned to its outermost position in the usual manner then the several parts again assume the position shown in Fig. 1, that is, the picker stick A can safely return without danger of binding of the parts of the lug strap owing to the links E pivotally supporting the straps G. The sweep straps are preferably provided with several apertures G for the passage of the bolt H so as to permit of properly adjusting the straps G relative to the sweep stick I.

The clamp C is preferably constructed as follows: Through a yoke C" extends the picker stick A and the lower end of the support B and in the yoke is mounted a shoe or a saddle C seated on the outer side of the support B and pressed inward against the same by a screw C screwing in the outer end of the yoke C. The shoe C is provided with a guideway C engaged by the outer end of the yoke C so as to prevent accidental disengagement of the yoke C and the shoe C The shoe C is further provided with a pin C which extends through the support B and engages a recess A formed in the outer side of the picker stick A, so that when the screw C is screwed up the shoe C is firmly pressed in contact with the support B whereby the latter is clamped in position on the picker stick A and up or down slipping of the support B is prevented, owing to the pin C engaging the recess A. i

It will be noticed that by the arrangement described the support B can be readily adjusted up or down on the picker stick A according to the position of the sweep stick I so that the latter and the straps G are arranged in proper alinement and after the support B has been moved to the desired position it is securely fastened in place by the operator screwing up the screw C to clamp the support B in place on the picker stick A by the clamp C.

The lug strap shown and described is very simple and durable in construction, can be readily adjusted up or down on the picker stick and requires no weakening of the picker stick by boring holes or the like in the picker stick.

The support B is preferably in the form of a bar and as it is clamped to the picker stick A at the very points where the most strain is exerted it is evident that the picker stick is reinforced by the said bar, and hence the picker stick is not liable to break or split.

In order to properly space the links E from the picker stick A and the support B use is made of washers D mounted on the pivot pin D intermediate the support 13 and the links E, as plainly indicated in Fig. 2.

It is understood that the lug strap may be readily used on narrow or Wide picker sticks.

Having thus described my invention, I

claim as new and desire to secure by Letters 5 Patent of said sweep stick, and between which the said picker stick extends, a striker extending between the outer ends of said straps, a supporting bar adapted for connection upon the outer edge of the picker stick to receive the impact of said striker, links pivotally con-- nected to said supporting bar and to said sweep straps whereby to support the latter, and a clamp surrounding the picker stick and said bar for securely holding the latter in proper position.

2. The combination with a picker stick, of a bar disposed upon the outer edge thereof and provided with a transverse opening, a plate having a spur adapted to extend through the bar opening and into engagement with the picker stick, a yoke adapted to surround the picker'stick, bar and spur plate, and a set screw threaded through the yoke and adapted to bear against the spur plate.
