To all 107mm t may concern Be it known that I, VERNON O. KARN, a citizen of the United States, residing at .Hollansburg in the county of Darke, State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Railroad-Tie and Rail-Fastening Means; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved railroad tie and rail fastening means, and one of the objects of the invention is to provide an invertible railroad tie, to either side of which a rail fastening means may be attached.
A further object of the inventio-n is to provide a hollow metallic tie having two of its opposing faces provided with corresponding over-hanging flanges, whereby the tie may be inverted, so that the fastening means may be mounted and connected to either of said opposing faces.
A further object of the invention is to provide a rail fastening means consisting of a plate having opposite hooked ends to engage the flanges of either face of the tie, whereby the plate may be adjusted on the tie, there being ears on said plate between which a rail clamping lever is pivotally mounted, said lever having means for holding the lever in contact with the base of the rail.
In practical fields, the details of construction may ynecessitate alterations falling within the scope of what is claimed.

Referring more especially to the drawings, 1 designates a metallic railroad tie. which is hollow, and substantially rectangular in cross section, the opposing faces 2 and is a sectional view on line 3 3 Specification of Letters Patent.

Each rail fastening means consists of a plate 5, the opposite ends of which curve downwardly and upwardly, thereby forming the hooks 6, which may engage over and under any two corresponding flanges el, so as to hold the plate 5 to the tie, that is, against upward displacement. Upon reading the drawing, it is clearly obvious that the plate 5 may be arranged upon either face portion 2 or 3 of the tie. Each plate 5 is provided with upstanding ears 7, between which, upon a suitable pin S, a lever 9 is pivotally mounted. One end of the lever is constructed correspondingly to and designed to fit the base of the rail. In other words, this end constitutes a gripping jaw 10. The other end of the lever is provided with a threaded eye 11, in which the set bolt 12 is threaded, there being lock nuts 13, to hold the bolts in adjusted positions. lV hen the rail is placed in position the opposing jaws of the levers are disposed in engagement with corresponding opposing parts of the base of the rail, the plates 5 having been adjusted, after which the bolts 12 are adjusted, so that their lower extremities 14 will contact with the face of the tie. The bolts are adjusted sulliciently, to force the jaws 10 closely in Contact with the base of the rail, thereby securely holding the rail in position.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful, is
1. In combination with a railroad tie having laterally and downwardly extending longitudinal side flanges, a plate having its ends provided with hooks extending over and hooked under said flanges, and rail clamping means carried by said plate to hold the rail on the tie, said means comprising a pair of ears on said plate, a lever pivoted between the ears and having a clamping jaw at one end to engage the base of the rail, the other end of the lever having a set screw threaded therethrough to contact with the tie, to force the clamping jaw in engagement with the base of the rail, and means for locking the set screw after having been adj usted.
