TIE AND RAIL-FASTENER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STANIsLAw DUTKOW- SKI, a citizen of Austria, residing at Saginaw, inthe county of Saginaw and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ties and Rail- Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to railroad ties which are formed from metal such for instance as steel or iron and which are embedded in cement so that the metallic frame will be protected from exposure to the weather.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved type of frame and an improved type of rail securing means.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein,
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the tie with the rail clamping means removed. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the tie with the rail securing means removed. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 with the rail and clamping means in place. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2 with the rail and clamping means in place. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the completed tie. Fig. 6 is an end elevation of the completed tie with the rail in place. Fig. 7 is a transverse sectional view through the tie. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the tool which is used for releasing the clamp which holds the tie securing plate in position.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals it will be seen that this tie comprises a metallic frame shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4, and which comprises the lower longitudinally extending bars 10 and 11, and the cover plate 12 which is supported by means of the struts 13. A bearing plate 14 is mounted upon each end of the plate 12, and is secured by means of the bolts 15 or any other desired means, and carries a clamping plate 16 having one end reduced to form an overhanging tongue 17 which is adapted to engage one side of the base of a rail 18. The clamping plate is secured in place by means of the bolts 19 which pass through the bearing plate 14 and cover plate 12. It is, of course, obvious that any other desired securing means may be used in place of the bolts 19. A plate 20 is secured to the cover plate 12 by means of the bolts 21 or Specification of Letters Patent.

1 other desired means and is positioned in spaced relation to the inner end of the bearing plate 14 so that a seat 22 is provided in .which a second clamping plate is mounted.
The rail 18 rests upon the inner end portion 23 of the bearing plate 14, and has one side of the base fitting beneath the tongue 17. The second clamping plate comprises upper and lower sections 24 and 25, the lower section being provided with beveled ends which :fit between the undercut ends of the plates 14 and 20. The section 25 is secured to the section 24 by means of the bolts 26 and has an outwardly extending tongue 27 which engages the opposite side of the rail base. The opposite end of the section 25 stops short of the end of the section 24, and the exposed end of the section 24 is provided with a notch 28 which registers with a groove 29 cut in the plate 20. The plate 20 and cover plate 12 are provided with alined openings 30 and 31, the openings communicating with the groove 29. A latch 32 fits in the groove 29 and overhangs the end of the plate 20 so that it may fit into the notch 28 and hold the second clamping plate in the seat 22. The upper portion of the latch 32 is provided with a longitudinally extending groove 33, and with an opening 34 which connects the groove 33 with the opening 30. A spring 35 has one end mounted upon a rod 36 passing through the opening 34 and has its lower end inclosed by a sleeve 37, the
lower end of the spring being mounted upon -moved from the seat 22, thus releasing the rail. The tool which is used comprises the lever 40 which has a flattened end 41, jaws 42 being pivotally connected with the end of the lever by means of the pivot pin 43 and so arranged that they will securely grip the latch so that when the lever is rocked upon its fulcrum 44, the latch will be raised against the tension of the spring 35.
After the frame for the tie has been constructed as described, the frame is embedded in cement so that the metallic parts will be protected from exposure to the weather so that the tie will be securely reinforced. The tie is placed upon the track bed, and the rail is seated upon the seat 23, with one side of the base fitting beneath the tongue 17. The second securing plate is then mounted in the seat 22 with its tongue 27 engagingthe opposite side of the rail base, and the rail will then be securely held in position. In order to get this second securing plate in position, it is necessary to raise the latch and slip the second clamping plate in sidewise until the notch 28 registers with the groove 29. The latch is then released and fits into the notch so that the plate will be prevented from moving. WVhen it is desired to remove the rail the latch is raised, and the plate slipped out of the seat 22, and the rail can then be very easily removed from the seat 23. It will thus be seen that the rail is held in place without the use of spikes or bolts so that there is little difficulty in removing the rail when desired. It will also be seen that since a special type of device is necessary to raise the latch that the rail cannot be disconnected from the tie by unauthorized persons.
What is claimed is 1. A tie comprising a frame, said frame comprising lower bars, a cover plate, struts supporting said cover plate from said lower bars, a bearing plate mounted upon said cover plate, a second plate mounted upon said cover plate and forming a seat between said bearing plate and said second plate, a clamping plate mounted upon said bearing plate, a second clamping plate mounted in said seat, and a latch carried by said second plate plate mounted upon said bearing plate, a
second plate mounted upon said frame, a second clamping plate mounted upon said frame between said bearing plate and said second plate, said second plate and said second clamping plate being provided with alined grooves, and said second plate and frame with alined openings, a latch mounted in said grooves, a sleeve extending from said opening beneath said frame, and a spring having one end connected with said latch and the opposite end connected with the lower portion of said sleeve to hold said latch normally in position to retain said second clamping plate in place.
3. A tie comprising a frame, a clamping plate mounted upon said frame, a second clamping plate mounted upon said frame, a latch resting upon said frame and engaging said second clamping plate, said latch being provided with a longitudinally extending groove and said latch and frame being provided with alined openings, a pin passing through the opening in said latch, a sleeve extending from the opening in said frame, a spring having one end mounted upon said pin and its opposite end connected with said sleeve, and a cover mounted in said groove and covering said openings.
