APPAREL-CORSET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 8, 1913.
Application filed October 11, 1912. Serial No. 725,104.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DANIEL Kors, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements'in Apparel-Corsets, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention is designed as an improvement upon or addition to the apparel corset structure shown and described in my application for Letters Patent, filed June 1, 1912, Serial-No. 700,936, with the object of applying a tension against the too ready opening-out of the plait structure, consequently imparting an increased reducing tendency over the upper portions of the limbs. Like the device of said application, the device of the present invention does not relate to a corset having abdominal characteristics, but to a corsetadapted to control and re-shape the upper portions of the limbs. In the device of my present invention, I have added to each of the two complementary members at the front of the corset below the stays and front steels, and which are provided wit-h a tapering plait,
an elastic webbing strap connected at about the side to the corset skirt and at the other end to the edge of a complementary member and at the edge of the plait, hence the plait cannot be opened out without stretching the elastic webbing, consequently in a sitting position of the wearer, the plait is not so quickly and readily opened resulting in a greater tension, and when released in a standing position of the wearer, is more quickly closed, all of which is hereinafter more particularly set forth.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is an elevation of the inner surface of the corset and at the lower front portion thereof, and Fig. 2 is a sectional plan at the broken line 00 00 of Fig. 1 looking down in the direction of the indicating arrows.
A portion of one-half of the fabric body of the corset is shown at a, and the skirt thereof at a b and c are hose supporters, the supporter 5 coming at the side of the corset and consequently the side of the figure and the supporter 0 coming directly in front and depending from the inclined portion of the fabric below the front steel.
(Z represents one of the two complementary co-acting members, or flesh reducing sections provided at one edge, that is the free edge coming at the center of the corset, with members of complementary fastening devices. This member (Z, as in my aforesaid application, may be of fabric or of elastic fabric. (Z is the plait of the same, preferably tapering, widest at the lower edge of the corset and formed by a piece of fabric folded upon itself with one edge connected to the skirt and the other edge connected to an upright edge of the member (Z, the said member (Z and the plait 6Z1, together, forming a substantial continuation of the skirt (1 The member cl is wholly disconnected from the corset along the upper edge 2, but is connected along the vertical edge 3 to one edge of the plait, while the other edge of the plait is connected to the skirt and the edge a of the skirt extends at least partially over the plait (Z The elastic strap 6 is connected at one end to the side of the skirt and side of the corset a approximately over the hose supporter o, and the same occupies substantially a horizontal position with the opposite end connected to the edge of the complementary member d at the edge of the plait, so that when the plait opens under tension the strap 6 is at once elongated and put under tension. The strap 6 therefore has a holding-back effect upon the member (Z, tending to keep the plait closed. This closing tendency is also in evidence, because the hose supporter formed of the two parts of folded webbing f f has one end connected to the skirt and the other end to the plait, consequently it tends, under tension, to keep the plait closed. Both closing effects are in evidence in a standing position of the wearer, and in a sitting position of the wearer the plait is not so readily opened, because of the tension upon the elastic strap 6, which tension also increases with the elongation of the strap, hence greater tension is applied for the performance of the function of the complementary member in conjunction with the skirt of the corset upon the upper portion of the limb of the wearer.
While I have shown in the drawing an illustration of only one-half of a corset at the front and lower portion, it is of course to be understood that the other half of the I claim as my invention:
1. An apparel corset comprising in the front, below the front steels and boning, complementary co acting flesh reducing members adapted to be connected together at the center of the corset, plaits which connect at one edge to one of the said members and at the other edge to the skirt of the corset, means for applying tension to the said members when the wearer of the corset is in a standing position, and elastic members adapted to apply tension to the aforesaid members when the wearer of the corset is in a sitting position, and thus regulate the extent to which the plaits are then open.
2. An apparel corset having in the front, below the front steels and boning, complementary co-acting flesh-reducing members adapted to be directly secured to one another at the center of the corset, plaits, one partof each of which is connectedto one edge of one of the said members and the other part of each of which is connected to the skirt of the corset, and elastic straps each secured at one end to the skirt of the corset at about the side of the wearer, and at the other end to the inner edge of one of the said members, to apply tension thereto and determine the extent to which the plaits open when the wearer is in a seated position.
3. An apparel corset having a skirt and comprising in the front, below the front steels and boning, complementary co-acting flesh-reducing members adapted to be connected together at the center of the corset, adjustable devices connecting the said members to the said skirts of the corset, means for applying tension to the said members when the wearer is in a standing position, and elastic members for applying tension to the said members when the wearer of the corset is in a sitting position.
