DANIEL AUGER, OF FLOOlDWOOD, MINNESOTA.
RECEPTACLE-COVER FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 25, 191 3.
Application filed May 4, 1912. Serial No. 695,228.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL AUGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Floodwood, in the county of St.'Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Receptacle-Cover Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to receptacle cover fasteners and has for one of its objects to provide simple and cfiicient means whereby a cm'er may be easily, quickly and securely fastened upon tubs, pails and similar receptacles.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a cover having one or morelatch members secured thereto and projecting on the edge of the cover, metallic loops or casings on the upper edge of the receptacle to receive said latch member, and a hinged hasp on the cover to engage a staple upon the receptacle, said hasp serving as a suitable handle whereby the cover may be rotated upon the receptacle.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a fastening device of the above character whereby the cover may be easily and quickly arranged upon the receptacle and securely sealed, thereby obviating liability of the same being tampered with, said fastening means being comparatively simple, inexpensive to manufacture and strong and durable in construction.
With the above and other objects in view as will become apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, combinations and arrange ments of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing-in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tub or other receptacle provided with my improved cover fastening means, showing the position of the fastening elements on the cover before the cover is secured in position to close the receptacle. Fig, 2 is a side elevation showing the cover closed and sealed upon the receptacle; and Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the followingdescription and designated in the accompanying drawing by like reference characters.
In the accompanying drawing I have shown the present invention applied to an ice cream tub, but it will be understood that the invention is applicable to receptacles of other form and construction employed for she shipment or transportation of merchanise. In the illustrated embodiment of the invention 5 designates the body of the receptacle which is provided upon opposite sides and adjacent its upper end with suitable handles 6 whereby the same may be conveniently lifted and-moved from place to place. To the wall of the receptacle .at the upper edge thereof one or more of the sheet metal casings 7 are secured. This casing is formed from a single sheet of metal bent to provide a substantially rectangular housing which is open at one end as indicated by the numeral 8. The sheet metal plate at the other end of the housing is-flanged to close the housing and laterally extended to provide an attaching lug 9. The longitudinal edges of the body of the plate are also laterally disposed to provide attaching flanges 10, said flanges and the lug 9 being securely fastened to the top wall of the receptacle by screws 11.
The top or cover 12 of the receptacle is provided with a staple'handle 13 and upon the annular wall of this cover a plate 14 is securely fastened, said plate projecting beyond the edge of the wall and having a lateral extension 15 which is adapted to be received in the open end of the housing or casing 7 as will more fully appear from the following description. To this cover and in spaced relation to the plate l t a second plate 16 is secured to which at the edge of the cover a hasp 17 is hingedly connected as at 18. To the upper edge of the receptacle a plate 19 is securedand is provided with a loop or staple 20. The hasp 17 carried by the cover is slotted as at 21 to receive this staple or loop when the cover is properly positioned upon the upper open end of the receptacle.
In the use of my improved fastener, the cover is inserted over the upper end of the receptacle in the usual manner and said cover rotated thereon to position the extension 15 of the plate 14 in the housing or casing 7; The cover may be turned by means 1 of the handle 13 thereon or the hinged hasp plate 17 may be grasped with the hand and utilized as a convenient handle by swinging the same outwardly. When the extension 15 of the plate 14 has been moved into the casing 7 to its full extent, the hinged hasp plate 17 will be in positionabove the plate 19 to be swung downwardly so that the staple 20 on the latter late will project through the slot 21 of the hasp. A wire indicated at 22 is now disposed through the staple 20 and the ends sealed together in the usual manner. It will of course be understood that when the plates 14 are provided upon opposite'sides of the topof the receptacle, the extensions 15 thereof will extend in opposite directions.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have devised a very slmple, eflicient and durable fastening device for receptacle covers whereby the cover may be quickly and securely fastened in position upon the receptacle so that the contents thereof cannot be tampered with without detection. It is obvious that owing to the very few parts employed the entire device may be produced at extremely small cost.
While I have above described and shown in the accompanying drawing the preferred form and construction of the several elements employed it will be understood that the invention is susceptible of considerable modifications without departing from the essential features or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:- g
The combination with a receptacle and cover therefor, of a keeper secured to the outer wall of the receptacle adjacent the upper edge thereof, said keeper being formed from a sheet metal plate bent to provide a central ofi'set portion forming a housing open at one end, said housing being provided with laterally extending attaching flanges equal in length to the housin and a longitudinally extendin attaching ange, an angular locking meinfier secured at its upper end to the outer wall of said cover and adapted to be partly received within said housing when the cover is rotated on the receptacle, said keeper limiting the rotation of the cover in one direct-ion and means for preventing rotation of the cover in the other direction. I
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
DANIEL AUGER.
